Res. 02-12

ANC 3F RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE INSTALLATION OF SIDEWALKS
ON BOTH SIDES OF THE 3400 BLOCK OF YUMA STREET, N.W.

WHEREAS, the 3400 block of Yuma Street, N.W., is within the boundary of ANC 3F; and

WHEREAS, the 3400 block of Yuma Street is heavily used by pedestrians of all ages traveling between the shops, restaurants, and residences along Connecticut Avenue, the Van Ness Metro Station, UDC and the large section of homes to the west and Sheridan School; and

WHEREAS, the only sidewalk available to pedestrians in this block is a badly-eroded and lumpy asphalt sidewalk on the north side of the street that is difficult for them to negotiate under most circumstances and impossible during inclement weather, causing most of them to walk in the street; and

WHEREAS, ANC 3F has been presented with a petition with 65 signatures that states:

            We, the undersigned residents of Washington, DC, are concerned about the unsafe conditions of public
            sidewalks on the 3400 block of Yuma Street, NW, and are requesting that city officials and government
            agencies act promptly to install safe sidewalks on one or both sides of that block
and

WHEREAS, the District Division of Transportation (DDOT) has advised ANC 3F that it agrees that a sidewalk is needed between 35th Street and Connecticut Avenue along Yuma Street and has included in the scope of work for the Barney Circle design-build contract adding concrete curb on the north side of the 3400 block of Yuma; placing a 6-foot-wide concrete sidewalk on the south side (UDC Side); repairing the existing asphalt-concrete sidewalk on the north side; and milling and resurfacing of the roadway;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT:  ANC 3F endorses the DDOT scope of work for sidewalks in the 3400 block of Yuma Street, N.W., but requests that the asphalt-concrete sidewalk on the north side of the street also be a standard 6-foot width or at least wide enough for two people to walk abreast where the grade and a utility pole would make a full 6-foot width difficult to engineer; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT:  ANC 3F recommends that the sidewalk on the south (UDC) side of the street be designed so as to save as much of the small forest along the street as possible.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT:  ANC 3F recommends that after the new sidewalk is installed on the south side of the 3400 block of Yuma, the crosswalks at Yuma and 35th Street be striped because of the proximity of this intersection to UDC.
