Res. 02-11

ANC 3F RESOLUTION REQUESTING ALL-WAY STOP SIGNS
TO BE INSTALLED AT THE INTERSECTION OF
YUMA STREET, N.W., AND 35TH STREET, N.W.

Advisory Neighborhood Commission 3F
North Cleveland Park and Forest Hills
P.O. Box 39290
Washington, D.C.  20016-9290

WHEREAS, the intersection of Yuma and 35th Streets, N.W., is within the boundary of ANC 3F; and

WHEREAS, no traffic controls currently are installed at this intersection – other than a crosswalk painted across 35th Street at Yuma -- even though the approaches to this intersection in the 3400 block of Yuma Street and the 4400 block of 35th Street are both steep, winding hills, allowing drivers only limited visibility of the intersection at best; and

WHEREAS, nearby residents of both Yuma Street and 35th Street have requested that ALL-WAY STOP signs be installed at this intersection for their safety and for the safety of the large number of pedestrians of all ages that traverse this intersection between the residential area to the west and Sheridan School to the north and the shops, restaurants, and residences along Connecticut Avenue, the Van Ness Metro Station, and UDC to the east and south; and

WHEREAS, special caution is required at this intersection now because lack of sidewalks on both Yuma Street and 35th Street forces many of these pedestrians to walk in the street; and

WHEREAS, after the sidewalk is added on the south side of the 3400 block of Yuma Street, the most likely pedestrian route between the uses to the east -- Connecticut Avenue, the Metro, and UDC – and the neighborhood to the west and school to the north will be to follow the sidewalk on the south side of the 3400 block of Yuma until its end at the intersection, to cross Yuma at 35th Street, and then to cross 35th Street to access the only available sidewalk in the 3500 block of Yuma, the one on the north side;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT:  ANC 3F requests that ALL-WAY STOP signs be installed at the intersection of Yuma Street, N.W., and 35th Street, N.W.
