ANC3F RESOLUTION MEMORIALIZING
THE LATE AARON GOLDMAN

WHEREAS, our former neighbor, Aaron Goldman, died on October 2, 2000, at the age of 87 after a remarkable lifetime of service; and
WHEREAS, Aaron Goldman was born and reared in the District of Columbia where he and resided all his life (including many of his 54 years with his first wife, the late Cecile Salomon Goldman, at 4720 Linnean Avenue); and
WHEREAS, he graduated from District of Columbia public schools and Georgetown University School of Foreign Service (class of 1934) and, unable to find work at the State Department, went to work as a temporary manager for Macke Corporation, a vending machine company, which he later came to lead, diversify and build up into one of this Metropolitan Region’s first companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange (in 1960) with a payroll of some 10,000 (by 1973); and
WHEREAS, Aaron Goldman served our county on active duty in the U.S Navy during World War II; and
WHEREAS, Aaron Goldman fought economic discrimination, chaired the Committee for Job Opportunities (which educates employers about racial and religious prejudice), championed civil rights and racial equality, served on the D.C. Commissioners’ Council of Human Relations from its inception in 1958, first as a member and then as chairman (from 1960-63, declining reappointment), and continued to work for these and other righteous causes his whole life; and
WHEREAS, Aaron Goldman was president of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Washington, chaired the Jewish National Community Relations Advisory Council, served on the national board of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, was a member of Adas Israel Congregation, chaired the board of WETA, served on the board of regents of Georgetown University, chaired the fund-raising campaign for the Community Chest Federation (forerunner of United Way) and led numerous philanthropic and service endeavors all his life; and
WHEREAS, Aaron Goldman, after retiring from business, also turned to writing, including plays which have been produced at theatres in Washington, and his autobiography; and
WHEREAS, Aaron Goldman expounded his views forcefully, but graciously throughout his life, sharing his insights to encourage development of new leaders;
NOW THEREFORE, ANC 3F registers its appreciation for Aaron Goldman’s
many services and accomplishments and expresses its condolences to his
entire family, especially to his daughter, our neighbor, Phyllis Margolius,
his widow Paula, son Michael D. and brothers Nathan and Balfour.
