Satay Club - great neighborhood restaurant

I'm so pleased everyone who tried Satay Club found it to their liking and posted their comments. I continue to go. On Tuesday I purchased a Carry Out luncheon for a handicapped client who can't get out and about much and (1) discovered there are 17 entrees on the lunch menu rather than the ten I wrote about and (2) paid just $6.95 per serving rather than the $7.95 to eat on site. WOW! Just wow. As cheap as a sandwich downtown.

Sunday November 2 at 9 am, to benefit the Washington Youth Garden at
the National Arboretum. This will be the fourth year this event has
been held, and it is a great experience for kids and adults alike. Not
only is the Arboretum stunning at this time of year, but most runners
are unfamiliar with it as a great place to get exercise. Go to
www.washingtonyouthgarden.org to get more information. (Dogs on leashes
and kids in strollers are encouraged to participate).

Neighbors -

My family and I are moving to London, England this winter and are looking to rent our cute but spacious 5 bedroom, 3 ½ bath Tenleytown house starting in January, 2009. The house has a cute front porch with a swing, an eat-in kitchen, a master bedroom with en suite bathroom, a huge yard with a play-set and is convenient to everything. If you are interested and would like more details please e-mail me at Sczerina@yahoo.com.

In addition, I'd like to mention that our 1923 house is in excellent shape thanks to the hard work of Something Different Carpentry, a small professional DC based company that I have used over many years to replace a rotted balcony, build back steps, refinish my bathroom, and refinish my basement with built in cabinets. They have done a terrific job on everything they have done for me and have always been professional, neat, and considerate while doing high quality work. Dave Robertson, the owner, can be reached at 321-6416 or at sdcarpentry@aol.com. I highly recommend him.

The DC Youth Advisory Council Is Seeking Ward 3 Youth

About The DC Youth Advisory Council (DCYAC)

In April 2002, legislation was signed into law establishing the DC
Youth Advisory Council (DCYAC). The DCYAC is located within the
Executive Office of the Mayor and was created by District youth and
officials in order for young people throughout the city to have an
official voice in the policies, programs and actions within the
city. The DCYAC is responsible for influencing change in legislation
and policies that impact youth and for developing more youth and
adult partnerships.

History
The DCYAC was established as a result of The City Is Mine: Youth
Summit held in November 2000. There, District officials met with
more than 1,400 young people and listened to their suggestions about
improving the city. At the Summit, DC youth identified three
priority issues of safety and violence, education, and
jobs/training. An overwhelming message from the Summit was the need
to change the way young people interact with their government.

Structure and Support
The DCYAC consists of 32 council members, between the ages of 13 and
22, selected from various sectors of the District (3 members from
each of the 8 wards and 8 at-large representatives who have
experience with the Juvenile Justice System and Foster Care).
Membership reflects a broad range of diversity encompassing, but not
limited to, relevant differences such as ethnicity, location of
residency, religion and gender. The Youth Advisory Council advises
the Mayor, the DC Council, DC Public and Public Charter Schools,
other key decision makers in the District, and adult leaders in the
District by:

• Commenting on legislation and policies that impact youth;
• Presenting methods to resolve youth-related conflicts
between youth and between youth and adults;
• Proposing recommendations to improve the lives of youth;
• Monitoring and measuring the effectiveness of youth programs
and policies;
• Partnering with neighborhood and youth organizations on
shared issues; and
• Providing youth with leadership development training.

Members of the DCYAC have a background in community-based activities
with a sincere interest in and motivation to work for the community.
As youth leaders, they bring real and fresh perspectives about youth
issues and act as effective communicators between the District and
their home communities. The DCYAC meets twice a month and publishes
a yearly report, to be publicly distributed, of its activities,
recommendations and accomplishments.

Membership
DCYAC membership benefits include influencing the District's youth-
related policies and programs; creating legislation that aids youth;
serving as a representative for District youth; interacting
regularly with District officials and other local leaders; and
developing leadership skills. DCYAC is a wonderful way for young
people in the District to gain experience in community service,
civic participation and youth advocacy. Throughout the year, DCYAC
members will be able to meet and work with other District youth
through numerous programs and collaborations. In the addition, DCYAC
members may have the opportunity to travel to different cities and
participate in national conferences and events.

I have just seen in person a great product - make them yourself wool fingerless gloves. Designed and marketed by a local knitter who is an excellent designer and teacher.
To find out more go to www.knitouttathebox.com for more information. The kit includes directions, needles, choice of color of yarn and is a wonderful idea for yourself or for a friend. Makes a good gift either knitted up or as a kit. Perfect to keep your hands busy sitting at a child's practice or game, in the carpool line, in a boring meeting, on the Metro, on a trip in the car or flight etc.
Check it out.

International Baccalaureate Prog. at Deal - - Tonight

Posted by: "Torresen" torresen@comcast.net   torresen

Mon Oct 20, 2008 5:11 pm (PDT)

Come learn about the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program we're building at Deal!

IB Parent Information Night!
Tuesday, October 21
6:30 - 8:00
(In our new cafeteria)

This Tuesday evening (6:30 - 8 pm), we will be meeting as the Deal parent
community to discuss IB MYP - the entire meeting will be modeled as an MYP
unit/lesson led by Mr. James Albright, Deal's IB Coordinator.

The guiding question: How does the development of an IB Middle Years Program
at Alice Deal affect the local community?

There will be an activity to assess prior knowledge, several activities
based on the overall program, the Learner Profile, and the Areas of
Interaction. The culminating activity will involve community members
identifying features of the MYP and the community that effect and reinforce
each other. There will be a concluding activity and a chance for parents to
express themselves on a "Community Wall" which, we hope, can be posted
prominently in the building for all to see.

Please join us for this informative evening!
