Dear Neighbors,
My colleague will be showing the film "Health, Money, and Fear," a film about health care in the U.S., next Thursday October 16 at 7pm at the Cleveland Park Library (Conn Ave and Macomb). The film is being offered free of charge and all are welcome. Please see below for more information and please pass along to anyone else you think may be interested.

Health Care Reform is a hot topic these days. There is general consensus that our current system is beset with many problems. Meaningful change will not be accomplished by an overly simplistic “quick fix.” It is imperative that voters, as well as policy makers, learn as much as possible about the underlying causes of the current crisis and join in a serious and respectful dialog about solutions. In an attempt to educate the public, stimulate discussion, and promote reform, an emergency room doctor named Dr. Paul Hochfeld has produced a 48 minute video that addresses the question of why health care cost so much, and suggests what could be done about it.

"Health, Money and Fear" includes interviews with, among others, Dr. Arnold Relman, Dr. Marcia Angell (both former Editor-in-Chief New England Journal of Medicine), Dr. Stephanie Woolhandler (Co-founder of Physicians for a National Health Program), Dr. John Kitzhaber (fellow ER Doctor/former Governor of Oregon), Paul Ginsberg (Director of the Center for Studying Health System Change, Washington, D.C.), and Dan Callahan (a pioneer in the field of Medical Ethics). A review of the film can be found at: www.thehastingscenter.org/Bioethicsforum/Post.aspx?id=1526&terms=hochfeld.

The film will be shown on Thursday, October 16th, at the Cleveland Park Branch Library, 3310 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington DC, at 7:00 pm, followed by a discussion facilitated by Dr. Hochfeld, who made the film. Since we must be out of the room promptly by 8:45, the film will start precisely at 7:00. Admission is free. Parking is limited but the library is only 2 blocks from the Cleveland Park Metro station.

On Friday night, I was robbed by two men in North Cleveland Park who
passed me on the street in an SUV, then pulled over. One man blocked
the sidewalk where i was riding (I know, I usually ride properly in
the street but it was late and wasn't thinking) then the driver got
out
armed with a handgun.

I'm writing the list because the police informed me that apparently
these same guys (two Hispanic males, 25 years or so) have been hitting
the neighborhoods (CP, Tenley) repeatedly with the same scheme. They
got three that same night. Cyclists and pedestrians, _please_ use
caution at night on some of the quieter streets.

Not wanting to be alarmist and it's a shame that in such lovely areas
of town we need to worry about these things, but let's all look out
for one another!

Free Viburnum Bush

Help save another tree/shrub:
I have a beautiful doublefile viburnum (v. plicatum tomentosum)that
must be removed because it has outgrown its space. I don't have
another place for it in my yard, but would hate to see it discarded,
so I'm offering it to anyone who would like to remove it (carefully,
so it doesn't damage the surrounding plantings).

It is about 7' high and 7' wide, and has gorgeous white blooms in
May followed by clusters of dark berries. You can see it in my front
yard at 4706 Windom Place, just at the edge of the retaining wall.

If interested, please call 202-237-7830. I understand this shrub
transplants easily, and this is the ideal time to transplant!
