Re: Gutter / Downspouts - underground drainage

Posted by: "KD McLynn" kdmclynn@starpower.net

We had a drainage problem, in fact one drain was so silted up that it was
buried & non-functional. We went to Thorne Rankin & Associates Landscape
Design thinking that we had a bigger problem than it was. They referred us
to Robert Springs, who does their drain work & such. He came out,
immediately found the old drain & figured out a practical solution. His
crew transformed an ugly muddy spot next to our house to a fully functional
drain under attractive river stone, in one day. I have misplaced his number
somehow, but you can reach him through Rankin & Associates, 202/537-0969,

Good luck,
Kate

Discover the Location of DC's Highest Natural Elevation and how it Influenced TENLEYTOWN History

Each state is proud to have a natural high point elevation designation. Now so does DC - Point Reno!!! Through the survey efforts of the Highpointers Club and the DC Association of Land Surveyors, a marker has been installed at the National Park Service's Fort Reno Park in NW Washington. At an elevation of 409 feet above sea level, Point Reno is officially designated as the highest natural elevation in DC. Prior to the construction in 1860s of fortifications for the Civil War at Fort Reno to protect the nation's capital and the construction of a water reservoir system and towers in the early 1900s to serve DC residents and business growth, the highest natural elevation may have been around 430 feet.

Tenleytown - DC's second oldest neighborhood! Due to its high elevation, this area of DC has a long and rich history. From early Indian trails that preceded Wisconsin Avenue, to the tobacco trade of the 1800s, to the popular Tennally Tavern in the 1890s, Tenleytown was the crossroads of upper NW. With its commanding view of the countryside, in the 1860s Fort Reno became the largest of the Circle of Forts that protected the Union capital during the Civil War. The brick and stone water towers in the early 1900s at the Fort Reno site became well known icons due to their visibility. And the TV and radio towers surrounding the area moved in during the 1950s to take advantage of the higher elevation.

DC Parks & Rec Program Guide

Thu Apr 10, 2008 12:50 pm (PDT)

I just received DC Parks & Rec Program Guide in
the mail. It's a full color, glitzy and probably
expensive-to-produce magazine. It's also several
weeks out of date. Most of the adult classes listed have
already started, some of them back in March.
I want to make sure that my copy wasn't lost in the
mail before I write to the Director, Clark Ray.
Have any of you received this magazine, and if so,
when did you receive it?
Thanks for letting me know.
Kathy Smith

Has anyone found out why so many street trees in AU Park have chalky white marks at the base? I would hate to think that the healthy and very welcome tree in front of our house is marked for removal.

I hope I don't cause offense by asking, but is it possible that you didn't
hear animals wailing as they were shot, but rather firecrackers? The
description you provide (wailing followed by popping) sounds suspiciously
similar to how I would describe the sounds produced by the firecrackers
periodically set off very late at night near us (set off, I assume, by area
kids?).

Stone walkway: Whoever was asking for a recommended stone contractor, I
strongly recommend a third generation Italian stone mason with whom I have worked
for over 25 years in my construction engineering profession. He has done
beautiful work on churches ,office buildings, residences, and countless other
structures involving floors, retaining walls, etc. He replaced the walkways on my
home and several others in this neighborhood. He is Mario Volpe:  office

Also, this week, April 8, I saw a red fox on Morrison St., between 41st and 42nd. This was about 5:00 pm.

Thanks,
