Shots in the night

I was awakened Monday night by an animal (possibly a raccoon? didn't sound like a cat or dog) crying, around 46th and Brandywine Sts. I then heard a shot, followed by silence for a few minutes. Then heard more crying, followed by 3 or 4 shots, followed by silence for several minutes, whereupon I heard more crying, this time it seemed from several animals. No more shots, thank goodness. Possibly the shots were to put an injured animal or animals out of their misery - I am hoping that is the answer.
Jenny.
