Of course a pest control person will say
they're destroying your house. Here's what's in "Wikipedia:"
"Since the tunnels are near the surface, structural damage is
generally minor or nonexistent. A building at Cornell University
possibly containing nests since the early-1930s, with very heavy
nesting between 1966 and 1995, is still sound in 2006.[citation
needed] Carpenter bees can be important pollinators on open-faced
flowers, even obligate pollinators on some, such as the Maypop
(Passiflora incarnata), though many species are also known to "rob"
nectar by slitting the sides of flowers with deep corollas."

We had repeated problems with carpenter bees (they seemed to drill
holes in our house every season) and we finally called Western Pest.
Not only did they do a good job, but they also explained that the bees
can nest deep inside the wood frame of your house, destroying the
structure, much as termites do. So it doesn't sound as if "live and let
live" is the right policy for carpenter bees.
