Protecting the safety of those collecting trash indisputably is a crucial consideration, whatever time the pick-up occurs. But the city has regulations governing the hours for trash pick-up precisely to balance those safety/traffic concerns against the nuisance factor caused by trucks operating before sunrise in residential areas. If avoiding traffic were the only concern, we’d have garbage trucks rumbling through our streets in the middle of the night. No one is unsympathetic to the hardworking individuals who pick up our garbage. The issue is whether DPW is going to enforce its regulations.

touching film.
It will be opening in commercial theaters in April, but you can see it

Thanks Paul for your comment. It is a nasty and dirty job, and also doing it on some city street isn't the safest place to be. Never once have I forgotten the GREAT job they have always done for me. One thing I know, none of the neighbors dare complain to me about them, cause I'll defend them 100%. Then after the great clean-up job they did at the end of Grant Rd this morning, they deserve credit.

Garbage collection

Richard Paul makes some good points. I remember that a DPW employee working
on a garbage collection truck was killed in traffic a while back in
Cleveland Park, which was so very sad. Lots of people sent donations to
help his family, but more importantly, if it is safer for the workers to do
the collection before traffic picks up then I don't mind waking up a little
earlier one day a week. Also, perhaps the guidelines should adjust for the
season like daylight savings time, to permit earlier pickup during the
beastly part of the summer since it is light so early anyway.

I suppose that it depends a great deal on one's hours. Since I have to get
up to go to work anyway, the garbage trucks don't bother me. So this is a
good opportunity to hear lots of viewpoints.

Good cheer to all,

Kate
