Repeat burglar alarms are more than a nuisance - they consume valuable
police resources as they require a minimum of two officers to respond to the
scene. 99 times out of 100, there is little the officers can do - the
premises are secure and there is no way to locate the owner or shut off the
alarm. Officers will complete and leave a PD-12 form at the scene, which
informs the owners of the property that the alarm was malfunctioning. In
theory, the District has an ordinance which makes repeat alarms a finable
nuisance, but it has never been properly implemented (Councilmember Catania
introduced the legislation). While there is little that the Police
Department can do, neighbors can do a lot . they can speak to their
neighbors and let them know what an annoyance their continually ringing
alarm is, and they can suggest that their neighbors get the alarm
examined/adjusted by a professional. A little neighborly pressure is likely
to produce much better and faster results than anything the Police
Department could do.

Issue -   911 vs. 311 plus Status Report plus Patience.

Regarding my situation where two adjacent alley lights were dead, I
had gathered that information and provided the two pole ID numbers
every time with my three calls to 311 -- creating at first a little
confusion at 311 when describing the dead alley lights - (for which
there seems to be no separate category) - as "Street Lights". That
momentarily confused the 311 operator as seemingly oxymoronic. 311
also wants to know if the pole(s) are wood or steel. (Climbing
spikes are useless on steel.)

In addition to Pepco's (?) own original pole ID numbers, there are
now relatively new ID labels which are logically the DC authority's
ID numbers, placed there enabling the citizen to now identify poles
by their DC numbers which 311 can understand.

My DC numbers started with something like 3F0, as I recall. It's
easy to realize which numbers are the DC ID numbers to use when
calling 311.

Tenleytown Herritage Trail final Working Group meeting Feb. 13

Next Wednesday evening, February 13, will be our final Tenleytown Heritage Trail Working Group meeting, 6:30-8:30, Tenleytown Interim Library. At this meeting we will review our application materials prior to submitting them to the Heritage Trails Advisory Committee for approval. Even if you've never attended a Working Group meeting before, you're still welcome to join us. Even though this is our last public Working Group meeting, we will continue to be involved in the process of developing the Tenleytown Heritage Trail with the staff of Cultural Tourism DC. The Tenleytown Heritage Trail is co-sponsored by the Tenleytown Neighbors Association http://tenleytowndc.org and the Tenleytown Historical Society www.tenleytownhistoricalsociety.org, with Cultural Tourism DC www.CulturalTourismDC.org.
I want to thank everybody who has worked so hard on this and come out to the Working Group meetings. It's been wonderful to make so many new friends, and especially to meet so many long-time Tenleytowners.

Fillmore Arts Center benefit: Dinner with an Artist

Posted by: "Mats & Karen Floman" mkfloman@starpower.net   karenof

Fillmore Arts Center is a vital resource in our community, providing arts
and music instruction every week to DC Public School children from
elementary and middle schools throughout the city. Fillmore has been in
operation for over thirty years and, like many arts programs, has to fight
for every dollar it needs to keep this unique program running.

Now the community has a chance to support Fillmore while enjoying a very
special night out. Fillmore is currently selling tickets for its annual
fundraiser, Dinner with an Artist, which will take place on Thursday, March
6, 2008. It's a rare chance to enjoy a very special, intimate evening with
some of Washington's brightest artistic stars. This year's artists are
remarkable: chef Nora Poullion, artistic director Michael Kahn, musician
Chuck Brown, choreographer Dana Tai Soon Burgess, tango dancer Sharna
Fabiano, painter/potter Rebecca Cross, stamp designer Ethel Kessler, and
author Alan Cheuse.

And the best part? ALL of the money collected goes back to Fillmore to
support the arts programs that the children in your community enjoy every
week. Rarely do you find such an "everybody wins" prospect!

Please have a look at the event description located at the following web
address: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/415022. Even if you cannot attend,
please forward the email to anyone and everyone you know who might be
interested. The price and contact information for purchasing tickets are
at the bottom of the flyer.

Sincerely,

Karen O'Connor-Floman
