Tenleytown Heritage Trail meeting January 16

Posted by: "Carolyn Long" carolynlong@earthlink.net

Tue Jan 8, 2008 9:26 am (PST)

The fifth Tenleytown Heritage Trail meeting will held Wednesday, January 16, at the Tenleytown Interim Library, 4200 Wisconsin Avenue, 6:00 to 8:30. There will be light refreshments, in case you’re coming directly from work. At this session we will comment on the outline, refine it, and choose the theme/title. Working Group members should be prepared to start the application package, including the letter of intention, evidence of community outreach and meetings, support letters from ANC commissioners and community groups, route map, and trail outline.
We have also scheduled our sixth and final meeting for Wednesday, February 13, same time and place. This session will be a review of the application materials by the group prior to submitting them to the Heritage Trails Advisory Committee for approval.
The Tenleytown Heritage Trail is co-sponsored by the Tenleytown Neighbors Association, the Tenleytown Historical Society, and Cultural Tourism DC. Even if you haven’t attended the previous meetings, you’re welcome to come and share your ideas.

Fire Hydrants

Posted by: "gilbertosln" Gilberto.Solano@dc.gov   gilbertosln

Tue Jan 8, 2008 9:27 am (PST)

In response to the inquiry, regarding reflective tap around fire
hydrants. All newly installed fire hydrants will have reflective
tape/ bands placed around them to indicate two pieces of information
to the Fire Department. The observation of reflective tape/ band on a
particular fire hydrant tells the Fire Department that it has been
upgraded and that a water distribution system flow availability
analysis was performed. Fire hydrants that do not have a reflective
band/ tape have not been upgraded but in no way indicates a fire
hydrant is out of service. Daily, WASA electronically informs the Fire
Department which hydrants have been upgraded.

If a fire hydrant is placed out of service you will observe an out of
service ring placed on the fire hydrant nozzle. Fire hydrants that
require maintenance will also receive a ring clearly indicating such.
The objective is to eventually upgrade all public fire hydrants and
affix the appropriate markings to better assist the Fire Department in
suppressing fires and protecting District citizens.

What happens to 3-1-1?

Posted by: "Richard Paul" rlpaulproductions@starpower.net   rlpaulproductions

Tue Jan 8, 2008 9:28 am (PST)

For the past few years I've used 3-1-1 for non-emergency calls to the
police or fire department (noisy party, funny smell, etc). But I
heard this morning on the radio that 3-1-1 is about to replace (202)
727-1000.

I wrote to Abigail Petersen, the Ward 3 person in the Mayor's Office
of Community Relations & Services. She said, "I inquired about this
situation. I found out that the two services are merging, but you will
still be able to call either number.

Neither service is being discontinued, but there will be a merge of
the systems. Both services will still work, just as they have in the
past. I know that citizens rely on both, and this is good news;
perhaps things will be even more efficient after the merge."

I thought folks would like to know.

Scam alert

I have had similar phishing attempts in the past, and one quite recently, in the form of phone calls in which a man's voice (with a strong Indian accent) informed me that because I've paid my taxes so diligently the Government is going to reward me with several thousand dollars! I hung up at once, and realized later that I omitted to take the caller's number, although it's probably untraceable. Probably in India. But if I should get another of those calls and can manage to get the number, whom should I contact?

SCAM - Dunbar High Band

A very sweet looking young man came to my house 2 nights ago. He said that he played in the Dunbar High School band and that they were raising money to go on a trip. I asked for the address and phone number and said that I would send something straight to the school. I just called Dunbar to verify the information and was told that it is a scam. The Dunbar band is NOT collecting money for a trip.

DPW to observe Martin Luther King Jr. DAy,

2008 Holiday Trash/Recycling Collections Schedule

Leaf, Holiday Tree Collections to Continue Through Jan. 31, Including
MLK Day, Jan. 21

(Washington, DC) The Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today
how services will be affected January 21, 2008, when the District
observes Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, as well as the holiday trash and
recycling collections schedule for the remainder of 2008.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Monday, January 21, 2008

DPW offices will be closed to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr.
holiday. Most DPW services will be suspended, including trash and
recycling collections, street and alley cleaning, and parking
enforcement (meters, residential and rush hour lane restrictions, and
booting, towing or abandoned vehicle removal). All services will resume
Tuesday, January 22, 2008. Trash and recycling collections in
once-a-week collection neighborhoods will "slide" to the next day for
the remainder of the week. In neighborhoods with twice-weekly trash
collections, Monday and Thursday collections will be made Tuesday and
Friday, and Tuesday and Friday collections will be made Wednesday and
Saturday.

DPW will, however, collect leaves and holiday trees on the Martin Luther
King, Jr. Day holiday.

"We are extending our leaf and holiday tree collections through the end
of January to make up for time lost due to actual and predicted snow
events," said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. "Our leaf collection
team is the backbone of our snow response team, which means they
discontinue collecting leaves when snow or other winter storms are
predicted. In December, we had one actual snow event and predictions of
three others. For public safety reasons, we switch our leaf collection
equipment to snow fighting equipment to be ready when snow falls."

DPW reminds residents that leaves should be raked into tree box spaces
or bagged and placed at curbside for collection. Residents disposing of
holiday trees and other greenery should strip them of all ornaments and
tinsel, and place these items at the curb. Trees and greenery collected
from curbside by during January will be mulched.

After January, residents who want their trees to be mulched, may bring
them to the Ft. Totten Trash Transfer Station at 4900 Bates Road, NE,
where a special container will hold the trees for pick up by a
contractor. This service will be available until it is determined that
there is no further need for this service and the season has ended. Ft.
Totten is open to residents weekdays, 1 pm to 5 pm, and Saturdays from 8
am to 3 pm, except on holidays, such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day,
January 21.

Residents also may place their trees with their trash and the collection
crews will pick them up as space permits in their trucks. These trees
will be taken to the landfill.

For questions about these collections, please call (202) 727-1000.

2008 Holiday Trash/Recycling Collections

The trash and recycling collections schedule for the remaining 2008
holidays follows:

Presidents' Day Monday, February 18

Emancipation Day Wednesday, April 16

Memorial Day Monday, May 26

Independence Day Friday, July 4

Labor Day Monday, September 1

Columbus Day Monday, October 13

Veterans Day Tuesday, November 11

Thanksgiving Day Thursday, November 27

Christmas Day Thursday, December 25

New Year's Day Thursday, January 1,
2009

The holiday trash and recycling collections schedule also appears on the
DPW Web site. Please click on www.dpw.dc.gov <http://www.dpw.dc.gov/>
to see the 2008 DPW Slide Guide to Holiday Trash and Recycling
Collections in English and Spanish.

The English and Spanish 2008 Slide Guides also are attached.
