For quite some time now Homeward Trails has been planning a special
holiday cat adoption event featuring cats that have been waiting much
too long to find a forever family.
This Sunday from 12-2 come meet our special holiday kitties and
consider making one or more a part of your family. They have love and
wisdom to offer. Some of these cats have been waiting much too long,
passed over for younger, fluffier, thinner competitors :)
To get a sneak preview of our 12 holiday cats go to:

I have received a number of calls with regard to leaf collection and
have been in touch with DPW. DPW is running a little behind
schedule because many of the leaves did not start falling until
after the first cycle; however, DPW is working on catching up.
Please reference the leaf brochure for the second cycle of leaf
collection. If your leaves have not been picked up by the specified
date for your area, please call (202) 727-1000 to file a report with
DPW. Here is the leaf collection schedule:

A useful hint to save energy

Posted by: "kathysmithindc" ksmith1804@starpower.net   kathysmithindc

From: Kathy Smith -- Ksmith1804@starpower.net

Several days ago Matt Lillard, the technician from Elysian
Energy, inspected my house to determine its energy-use efficiency.
Elysian is the company doing home audits for the
DC Department of Energy.

This audit seemed very thorough and cost me nothing.

I learned that my house has fewer airleaks than I would have
expected. I also learned that I could save energy by
turning the hot water tank regulator over to the point
where, when taking a shower, I needed to add just a very
tiny amount of cold water to make the water temperature
just right. Matt said that many people keep the water
too hot and are using excess energy to keep it that
hot in the tank.

I'll receive a written report in about two weeks, but I
learned a lot just walking around with Matt. He had a
portable device that shows, by color, where cold air is
actually leaking into the house. It was neat! He also
had an elaborate fan device to determine how much air
escapes from the house.

I was surprised to learn that the city still has some
slots left for these inspections. I believe they end at
the end of the year.

If you haven't already done this, it's a really good deal.

Below is the information I sent out before, if you
are interested.

-----------------------

The DC Department of Energey will have a private contractor
go over everything in your house and tell you where the
energy inefficiencies are. They spend about 2 1/2 hours
and give you a lot of information at the end, including
where you're losing energy, how you can fix the problem, and
approximate costs to do the fix if you decide to do it.
Any repairs you make are strictly voluntary; they just want
to provide you with the information.

There are only 200 more audits available and they will
stop taking calls December 17. The person to call to arrage
the inspection is Willie Vazquez at 202-671-3304.

I had mentioned this survey before but didn't realize how
detailed an inspection it would be until I called to have
it done on my house. My understanding is that it is being
paid for by a surcharge on our energy bills. This is not
a free lunch but it sounds like a really terrific deal.

Below is the item I sent out before:

FREE Home Energy Rating

From: mccraecandace <mccraecandace@yahoo.com>

The District Department Environment (DDOE) is offering FREE Home Energy
Ratings to DC single family homeowners interested in addressing energy
efficiency. A certified energy rater will identify a home's energy
deficiencies and provide homeowners with cost-effective
recommendations, that when installed will reduce energy loss in the
home. Homeowners will receive a computerized report detailing wasted
energy within 7 to 10 business days following the assessment. The
program expires on Monday, December 17, 2007, so call DDOE today to
take advantage of a FREE Home Energy Rating. For more information or
to schedule your FREE Home Energy Rating, click on the link below or
call Willie Vazquez at 202-671-3304.

Terrific Computer Guy

Burt Emmer, 301 365-4877 or cell 301 1483 just reconfigured our computer so that it starts much faster and the e mail downloads rapidly. Some programs infiltrated our start up system and he was able to get rid of all the garbage. Now the computer that I thought of being on it's last leg is going to last a lot longer.
