Extra crosswalk enforcement on Wisconsin Ave.

I certainly don't doubt the statistic's about: "Recent analysis of high pedestrian crash intersections in the District shows that fewer than half of all drivers yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk."

But - crossing Wisconsin at Albemarle and or the cross-walk in front of Best Buy, as many as 4 times a day there is a "very" good chance that most pedestrian also don't obey the cross-walk. From my casual observation of crossing, I'd say there is a higher percentage of pedestrian that don't obey the signs than drivers that don't yield. In fact I'm amazed that more pedestrian haven't been hit, but for the quick thinking of many motorist. I've seen so many clueless cell-phone users just walking across (of course drivers are just as bad) without even looking.

Icy Conditions Possible — Motorists Advised to Drive With Caution

Media Contacts: Erik Linden, DDOT, 202-438-7719; Karyn LeBlanc,
DDOT, 202-497-4572

(Washington, DC) The National Weather Service is forecasting
additional precipitation through 9 pm this evening. DDOT and the
District's Department of Public Works (DPW) treated the city's
bridges and overpasses as well as primary and secondary roads
beginning last evening and continued throughout the day today.

The District's snow team will continue to treat the roadways as
necessary throughout this evening and will closely monitor pavement
conditions and respond with truck deployments as necessary.

Temperatures throughout the evening are predicted to be near and
below freezing. Motorists are strongly advised to remain cautious
and maintain awareness of possible icy conditions.

DDOT and DPW remind commuters and residents to:

· Use Metro when possible,

· Drivers should use extreme caution and maintain safe speeds and
distances from other vehicles, and to stay at least 35 feet behind
the snow plows,

· Remember even a 4-wheel drive SUV does not perform well in ice
and additional safety measures should be followed, and

· Be aware of road conditions, particularly black ice which can be
deceptive in its appearance giving the driver a false sense of
security on the road.

· On average 100 disabled vehicle incidents a week occur as a
result from flat tires or running out of gas. Tips for avoiding a
breakdown:

o Have sufficient enough gas to get to your destination

o Check tires for air pressure and tread conditions

o Keep plenty of water and flares in the car

o If you break down pull over and if possible to the right shoulder
or as far right as possible.

o Stay in your vehicle or wait behind a guard rail, if available

o Activate car flashers/emergency lights

Re: Windows Replacement

We just replaced 22 original windows. We looked at all
sorts of types, brands of windows including Marvin, Pella and a number
of vinyl windows. There are lots of windows at various prices – some
of the less-expensive vinyl ones are not finished very well, seem
flimsy. We eventually went with the Anderson Renewal line, which are
not vinyl but a recycled material. Anderson is advertising this line
heavily (see coupon with TV section in Post on Sundays – Post Home
section on Thursdays).

To see a selection of manufacturers and styles, try
Wheaton Window and Door or The Window Man in Fairfax. When replacing
windows, also consider having the exterior trim "cladded:" with
aluminum – never paint again.

Finally, be sure the installer will remove the pulleys
over which the ropes/chains run, then open up the pockets on the
original windows which give access to the iron weights, remove the
weights and stuff the pocket with insulation, before installing the
new windows.

The Anderson installation installed our 22 windows in one day
including the exterior cladding. We haven't had these in long enough
to determine the extent of fuel savings, but the house is much
quieter, there are no old storm windows rattling and the house seems
to hold heat longer.

In late 2005 we had done a total replacement (frame and
all) of two big windows in our den (equivalent of five double hung
windows). There we used Marvin – custom built to size and installed
by their mechanics. Those have made a substantial difference in
comfort and heat retention. Jim Greene, Windom Place

Am I the only person disappointed with the District's inattention to
snow clearing, sanding, etc. last night and this morning? Albemarle,
42nd, 43rd, etc. were solid ice, with cars skidding all over while
kids were walking to school. I don't think we were plowed, sanded or
salted, except on the more major thoroughfares. Is there any point in
complaining and, if so, to whom?

From: John A. Moody <johnamoodydc@verizon.net>

For some past years I have directed several such letters to
"419.fcd@usss.treas.gov"

Yesterday the disease has spread to Ghana with a new letter. When I
tried to use the working address of long-standing, it was
rejected as undeliverable.

"From: MAILER-DAEMON@mailhub-21.treas.gov
Subject: Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender

Does anyone have a new email address where we can
send these scam letters?

Has anyone had experience with Nu-Look Cleaning Service? They called
me out of the blue and I let them come over to give me a quote on new
windows. Just wondering if anyone in the neighborhood has dealt with
them previously.

Thanks,
Jason
