If you like cats and care about saving the lives of feral and stray
neighborhood cats, please watch this short video about

For sometime there has been a Friendship Station Postal Customer
Advisory Council to handle customer concerns and other issues regarding
the Friendship Station.
I suggest that that those with problems regarding mail delivery, postal
staff and other issues contact Co-chair Don Zowader, 3749 Chesapeake
Street, N.W., 237-1231 - donzowader@tpna.com or member Rick Gould, 3643
Upton Street, N.W., 362-2167 - rickgould@verizon.net.

We, too, have been having extremely late delivery in the Palisades. We are
also getting other people's mail (which makes me think that others are
getting ours). I have called the 20016 supervisor several times. The phone
number is (202) 842-3332. The last time I spoke to a supervisor there, I
threatened to call the Friendship Heights Postmaster. The supervisor
assured me that the Postmaster is well aware of the problem. They are
short-staffed and are attempting to get more people assigned to the
Friendship Station.

Rather than calling the Friendship Station, I would recommend calling the
D.C. Postmaster's Office. In the past, I have spoken to Robert Robak, a
customer service manager there. He has been pretty helpful. His phone
number is (202) 636-2244. Even if Robak isn't there anymore, the number is
probably the right one for someone in a position to voice some displeasure
about the staffing shortages at Friendship. It just doesn't make much sense
to complain to someone who can't fix the problem .

I got some more information about the situation at the Friendship Hts post
office. I called the USPS at the following number

General Information, Suggestions, and Complaints 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777)

to complain about the carrier who solicited a Christmas bonus. A courteous person took
my information and within a couple of hours I received an equally courteous call from
Mr. Morris Brown, a delivery supervisor at Friendship Hts. He thanked me and asked
for more information with a view to possible disciplinary action. (Carriers are not
allowed to accept [not to mention solicit !] money, and gifts only under in $20 value.)

He also said they're aware of the general problems with late and mis-deliveries as
well as problems inside the office. He said they have hired or are hiring numerous
new sorting clerks and that higher-ups from USPS frequently visit the office to look
into the problems. He said I could post his name on this discussion board but he
recommended that people address complaints through the 800 number. That way, the
higher-ups will be aware of the number of complaints and also this will ensure that
someone responds even if he himself is not available. (There are several delivery
supervisors and 60 carriers at FH, if I understood correctly.) So, let's see if
there's any improvement in the coming weeks.

I beg to differ with you regarding sending an anonymous letter to the Postmaster General. An anonymous letter will not get read or considered - by anyone. Ditto calling the Friendship PO - if you can reach an actual person there you will get no results.
I would write to the Inspector General's Office mentioning all specifics, times and dates, etc. Perhaps also the Postal Rate Commission (901 NY AVE) Office of the Consumer Advocate, etc. Dig around, get names and addresses and job titles of all the higher ups and we all can begin a letter writing campaign.
The "service" we receive is appalling to non-existant - I have my mail tossed on the front porch daily, regardless of how many times I have asked the letter carrier to put it in the mail slot and how many times I have called Friendship.

I have to say that, while I have experienced many of the same basic
civility issues at our local P.O., they could not have been nicer or
kinder to me on the day I managed to lock my dog in my running car on
Connecticut Avenue on a hot summer day when I got out briefly to use the
curbside mailbox. They recognized my distress and, without fuss, let me
use the phone, gave me a chair to sit on outside while I waited (in
vain) for AAA, gave me some water to drink, and eventually an employee
drove me home and back - on her break, no less - to look for the spare
set of keys. I remain truly grateful for their humanity and now just
try to be polite and pleasant myself when at the counter.

I am very pleased to hear about your experience. Just to make sure:
I have no beef with the
post office on Connecticut Av., Chevy Chase, DC. Everytime I go there
it has been a good
experience. It is the Friendship Office on Wisconsin Av. I have a
problem with.

Further on mail delivery

Perhaps this is of interest. This is what I got from Mr. Willingham re.: mail delivery.

Mr. Meier,

I am sorry for the delay in my response. I spoke today with Mr. Battle, one of the delivery
supervisors for the 20008 zip code. He explained that the delays have been caused by
two things: (1) the increased mail volume associated with the holiday season and (2) a
recent staff shortage. Mr. Battle has indicated that over the past two weeks, new carriers
have been brought on and trained. He expects that this will alleviate the problem. If you
find that you are still receiving late mail deliveries at the end of this week, please do let
me know so that I can follow up with him.

Regards,

Jonathan M. Willingham

Chief of Staff

Office of Mary M. Cheh (Ward 3)

Council of the District of Columbia

1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. Suite 108

Washington, DC 20004

Tel: (202) 724-8062

Fax: (202) 724-8118

jwillingham@dccouncil.us

and this is my reply:

Mr. Willingham:

Thank you for your efforts and your reply.
However you must realize that Mr. Battle's response is utter BS. None of these problems
have started recently. At least in the delivery zip code 20016 these problems have been
going on for many, many months. As one can tell from the comments on the Tenley and
CommunitE Listserv, the problem is not only with the delivery of the mail, but also with
the disgraceful service at the Friendship Post Office in general. Perhaps it is time to start
some action by going directly to the national HQ.

Does any one know where to complain at the main post office about ou

There is, or was recently, an Eleanor Culler at the Friendship Heights who is a top-level supervisor. I have complained often about mis-delivered mail, and there have been some improvements. But I agree, generally the service at this outlet and the one on Northampton Street is poor. The number I have for Ms. Culler is 842-3332.

I also have the following number to try: 523-2125. Another way to complain is to call 800/275-8777. They will eventually route you through to the Friendship branch.

Janney 4th Grade Service Project

Posted by: "gatorwack" gatorwack@yahoo.com   gatorwack

Mon Dec 3, 2007 1:52 pm (PST)

I wanted to let you know that the 4th Grade class at Janney is doing a
Winter Service project on Thursday, December 20th. Instead of doing
the usual holiday, non-denominational craft, the kids are going to put
together toiletry kits for homeless men and women.

We would love to include in each kit a new (or like-new) hand towel,
but simply don't have to budget to go out and buy these for all of the
kits. If anyone has any new or gently used (i.e., not stained, ripped,
or super-worn) hand towels, would you consider donating them to this
worthy project?

You can drop off towels at the Janney Front Office at 4130 Albemarle
Street. There will be a collection box there. Or you can send Lisa
Wackler an email, at gatorwack@yahoo.com, and she will be happy to pick
them up from you. We would love to have all donations in hand by
Tuesday, December 18th. Many thanks!

Mail Service

Mon Dec 3, 2007 6:38 pm (PST)

Neighbors,

My office has recently been fielding several calls from residents in
the 20008 zip code who are concerned with late mail delivery. I
have similarly noticed postings on the matter on various listservs
in the community. While the United States Postal Service is an
independent federal agency, I have attempted to discover, as best I
can, what was causing the delay. My staff has spoken with several
of the Delivery Supervisors for that zip code. Apparently, there
was a recent staff shortage. Coupled with the increased mail volume
during the holiday season, this meant delays in service. Over the
past two weeks, that staff shortage has been resolved and new
carriers have been trained. I am very hopeful that this will
address some, if not all of your concerns. If, however, it does
not, please feel free to contact my office, and I will try to
facilitate a broader solution. I would also encourage you to
contact the post office directly at (202) 523-2130.

Sincerely,

Mary M. Cheh
Councilmember, Ward 3

Post Office Complaints

Since the post office is federal, maybe our Congressional Delegate,
Eleanor Holmes Norton can help. I recommend discussing this with her
office.
