I'm the torn-up-lawn neighbor reporting back.

Since the consensus was critters digging for grubs, and after
discussion at Behnke's, we
treated with a Bayer product called Grub Killer Plus. I'm usually
very cautious about
chemicals and have used milky spore in the past as a maintenance
treatment, but we seemed
to have a severe problem and the potential for having a backyard
mudpit for winter as our
turf was stripped away loomed large. No way I could reseed with a
different yard topography
every day. Anyway, this product was recommended because it degrades
immediately. And
lo, very minimal digging now. I am ready to spread my Leafgro and
reseed this week!

I'm also the one that vented about alley dumping. After we took a
power saw to get rid of the
bunch of large limbs dropped there a couple weeks ago, a new batch was
left there late last
week. Due to work and travel schedules, we have yet to get that taken
care, but will do so in
the next couple days; we are apparently cheap labor for someone who
does not want to go to
the trouble. It occurs to me that we have a nice spot for dumping
because there are
substantial fences on both sides of the alley for much of our
mid-block, so almost anything
can happen back there and no one can see it. I guess we pay for our
privacy. (Plus the
streetlights are out there -- I'm reporting that today.)

I would welcome hearing about anyone's experience - good or bad - with
companies that come with a crew and clean the house from stem to stern.
What do they do, how well, and at what price? Many thanks.

From: John A. Moody <johnamoodydc@verizon.net>

This may not be well known because many people never open their
basement windows which in AU park are at ground level and too
inviting. We more aged types still hold onto some "magic belief"
that 1/8th inch of window glass separates the bad outer world from
our secure inner castle, as it used to be in 1935.

In today's real world, all that is needed to enter almost any AU
basement is to put a stone through that glass, reach inside to pull
down on that dangling handle, and the cellar window will fall back
about 30 degrees, intended to allow ventilation. Then in 1935
thinking, to make life easier for the housewife or maid, that
basement window can then be lifted completely out of its bottom
bracket and can be taken into the cellar wash tub for cleaning.
Thoughtful thinking ahead in that "modern" world of 1935.

I hesitate to publicize this fact of life today, not to put ideas
into anybody's head. We do live dangerously in total innocence of
the America we grew up in and used to know.

Room For Rent

My wonderful housemate has left town and I have a space to fill in my
bungalow here in Silver Spring. I have an 11x 13 bedroom (furnished
or unfurnished) with oak floors, large windows, decent closet and a
pretty view to rent. It has its own bathroom next door. The house is
sunny and roomy and tranquil. There's on-street parking, a front and
back yard, front and back porch, all standard amenities (ie, a/c.,
dishwasher, laundry room) and nice neighbors. It's well-connected:
buses run to the Silver Spring metro (red line) and across town to
Bethesda and Friendship Heights. You can walk to the metro in about
15-20 minutes. Alternatively, you can cross by car to Bethesda in 20
minutes (30 min. to NIH during rush hour) and to Cleveland Park in 25
minutes. I am fairly easy-going but like to keep a clean and
reasonably tidy house. Short term renters okay, min. three months.
Non smokers and no pets, please, although a kitten may arrive here
soon. Rent is $875 plus utilities. Kindly respond to
equiknox@juno.com. Thanks!
