Another thing: those trucks damage overhanging tree branches

Further to a prior posting about the illegal use of residential streets
in AU Park by large delivery vehicles and waste-handling trucks: these
behemoths regularly damage overhanging tree branches, thus injuring the
already fragile, dwindling vegetation in the neighborhood. Efforts to
put a stop to the use of side streets by big trucks might be helped if
residents were to note the provenance of offending vehicles (Garcia's
trash trucks are already on my list, many times) and were to report
same -- whether to the MPD, the company concerned, or to our Ward 3 DC
Council member.

The south side of Fort Bayard park, along Fessenden St, seems to
have become something of an informal off-leash area. On Sunday
there were off-leash dogs and on Fridays I often see them as well.
However, most owners seem very conscientious about picking up after
their animals (leashed or not) and making sure large dogs don't
intimidate small kids. As a resident who has coached children who
practice at Ft Bayard and other local parks, I've found that asking
owners to pick up or keep dogs away from the play areas usually
works fine. If not, there isn't much choice but to pick up after
them and point out to the kids what you're doing and why.

Re: Lawn Treatment

From: Ron Springwater <rkspringwater@starpower.net>

Yesterday I talked with a "master gardener" who suggested "grubex"
which is, indeed, another chemical approach. Moreover, it's
apparently usually applied in the spring during another phase of the
Japanese water beetle life cycle.

He also suggested "milky spore" -- a non-chemical approach --which
offers a most interesting prospect. Check out this website for a
history of milky spore's development and its success rate.

I wonder if any of your readers have experience using milky spore?

A Friendly Reminder from Casey Trees: Please Water Trees!

A Friendly Reminder from Casey Trees: Please Water Trees!

Conditions in Washington DC have been very dry. This drought is a
serious threat to young trees in the District.

Trees planted within the past three years need water and care to grow
strong and live long. Follow these simple steps to ensure your
neighborhood trees stay healthy.
Watering
• Apply water slowly so it penetrates and soaks the soil.
• During dry conditions, water new trees weekly with 10–20 gallons of
water; if the soil feels wet and soft to the touch use less, if dry
and hard use more.
• Using a Gator Bag, Ooze Tube, 5-gallon bucket with small holes in
the bottom, or a hose turned on low for 1/2 hour are all ways to
effectively water trees.

Mulching
• Mulch keeps the soil moist and controls weeds.
• Shredded bark or leaf compost works best.
• Use the "3-3" rule: place three inches of mulch in a three foot wide
ring extending from the tree trunk.
• Replenish mulch yearly.
• Never mound mulch up around the base of the tree - "volcano mulching."
Weed Wacker & Lawnmower Warning!
Weed trimmers and lawn mowers kill hundreds of trees every year by
tearing off their bark. Avoid hitting the bottom of the tree with
these tools and maintain the mulch around your trees to protect them
from injury.

Citizen Forester Program
Free classes about trees, tree planting and stewardship
Citizen Foresters are local volunteers trained by Casey Trees to serve
the DC community by helping to restore, enhance, and protect our
city's tree canopy. Citizen Foresters are responsible for utilizing
resources from the city and nonprofit organizations to improve the
health of trees, increase tree cover, and promote and protect the
city's green infrastructure.

To become a Citizen Forester, volunteers complete a combination of
free classroom instruction, field training, and community service. A
panel of experts and guest speakers participate in the sessions. The
curriculum includes three modules, each with a training and service
component.

Visit Casey Trees booth at the Green Festival, Oct. 6 and 7 at the DC
Convention Center and join us at one of our fall tree planting events

Re: Stolen Bikes

From: HR- Larry Weigle <LWeigle@redcoats.com>

Thursday when I got home I saw some things from my garage near the
alley and garage door. When I looked in the garage I discovered that
my bicycle was gone and my old car had been rifled through. I
mentioned it to a neighbor who said she had seen 2 bicycles about 100
feet further down the alley plied along the edge of the path. I filed
a report last night. This morning I talked to a contractor working at
another home on the alley, he told me that another neighbor had
reported the bikes to the police and that the police picked them up
Thursday about midday.

I called property Div at the police station described my bike and was
told to come and pick it up. Happy ending for me (although I don't
know what might have been taken from my old car. (I just hope it
wasn't a set of keys to the house.) Puzzling question is what's up
with the other bike found with mine (described as a child size
"laser") it must have been taken from somewhere near mine on Wednesday
night.

It takes a little self sleuthing because the neighbor who alerted the
police about the abandoned bikes has a 46th St address and my address
in on River Rd. but the alley backs up to both of our homes. No
connection was made by the police dept.

One other neighbor who shares the same alley leaves for work before
6am and probably thwarted the theft in progress. All in all I feel
very lucky today and am grateful for the neighbors who noticed things
out of place and phoned it in. The police dept. did a great job using
the information provided by the neighbors to figure out that the
retrieved bike was mine.

I wish other victims fare as well.

From: Smith, Yvonne (MPD) <yvonne.smith@dc.gov>

Below is a new website with an important message. Many of you have
probably already seen the new commercials on TV. Please pay close
attention to avoid becoming a victim of a financial crime. I think by
now, most of you know how to handle yourselves, but I saw a recent
court case on Judge Joe Brown and noticed that a, seemingly smart, man
and woman! became easy prey for a similar scam. Now the U.S. Postal
Service has gotten involved. Please pass this message on.
