Trucks; excessive speed; and failures to stop

Posted by: "architect.thomas" architect.thomas@gmail.com   architect.thomas

American University Park is plagued by large delivery and waste-
handling trucks whose drivers routinely violate posted signs and use
residential streets as through-routes between Wisconsin and
Massachusetts avenues, or between Western and Nebraska. Many
automobile drivers travel at high rates of speed along these same
streets -- Yuma, Albemarle, 46th, 47th, 48th, and others -- rolling
dangerously through controlled intersections and often ignoring stop
signs altogether. It might help to see the MPD step up traffic code
enforcements in the area.

As a Yahoo Groups user, you might want to read about Yahoo's use of web beacons, which
are another way that Internet companies gather data about users. If you go to the following
link, Yahoo's privacy policy gives you the option to "opt out." http://info.yahoo.com/

Metropolitan Police Department Gas Station Safety

Gas Station Safety

http://video.sheriff.org/psa_cartheft.shtml

In the past few months, there has been increased media coverage about
a recent crime tactic perpetrated by thieves. These thieves target
unsuspecting vehicle owners when they are pumping gas or paying the
tab in the station. Purses and other valuables, which are often
visible or easily accessible from passenger side of a vehicle, are the
main targets. To simplify things for the thief, the vehicle is often
left unlocked. The thefts normally take place when the victim is most
distracted - when he or she is pumping gas or going into the station
to pay for a purchase. A suspect vehicle will drive up next to the
victim's auto, quickly open the unlocked door, and grab any
easily-accessible items. Then they will just as quickly drive off. It
happens in a matter of seconds.

These sorts of thefts can be prevented when the appropriate
precautions are taken. Below are some helpful tips on how to avoid
becoming a victim:

a.. Pick stations that are well-lit and have video-surveillance
cameras at the pump.
b.. Make a list of favorite gas stations along your regular travel
routes. Stations near police departments and state police barracks are
good choices.
c.. Always remove your keys and lock the car doors while you are
pumping gas. If you sense danger and you have a panic button on your
car keys, keep your hands on the panic button until help arrives.
d.. Keep valuables out of sight in your vehicle and lock the doors,
even if you are going inside for just a moment.
e.. Pick your pump with care. It might be worthwhile to wait for the
pump nearest to the attendant or building.
f.. Pay attention to your surroundings.
g.. Don't be distracted by your cell phone.

Al McComber, of Federal News Radio's Code Red Radio Show shared a link
of a very helpful video clip produced by the Broward County, Florida
Sheriff's Office. The video offers tips on how to avoid becoming a
victim of theft at a gas station. View the complete video online at

Re: Lawn Treatment

Good luck....and I mean it. We are having the same problem. I tried
Shake Away and, then later, Plantskydd, but neither worked. What type
of treatment are you using? Will be most interested to hear your
result. If these are Japanese water beetle grubs, as suggested to me
by Bert at American Plant Company, the cycle of the near-surface
activity usually ends around mid-October and the grubs go deeper in
the soil where the critter -- whichever -- gives up its digging then.
Their near-surface cycle is typically all of September and the
first-half of October.

It sounds like the best approach may be just to wait until
the digging is done and throw some grass seed on the barest
areas. It's it supposed to be good for the lawn to be
aerated? Chemical treatments could change the character
of your soil and produce more serious problems down the
road.

Rude dog owner

I will admit that I am partly writing this just to vent. Yesterday at
Ft.Bayard park, where my kid practices soccer, a man who was still
dressed from work brought his two bassett hounds (I am pretty sure---
low slung, floppy ears). He let them off their leash (that alone is
against the law), and the dogs immediately bounded around the park.
Then one made a major dump under a tree ( a place where kids often go
to retrieve balls). Meanwhile the owner stood totally oblivious to the
scene---puffing away on a cigarette and yacking on his cell phone.
When one of the parents confronted him and asked him to clean up after
his dog---he became very agitated and angry, saying something along the
lines of "what made you think that I wasn't going to". Needless to
say, he never cleaned up after his dog.

So parents be forewarned as your kids play in that park and roll down
the hills...there are some very rude dog owners out there. Perhaps
somebody recognizes who this owner is, or perhaps they recognize
themselves reading this. Perhaps they will be better citizens in the
future. Julie

Must read: your pets, important facts..just might save a life

Some info a lot of people don't know:

Did you know that when a dog is rescued from the pound
(instead of purchased from breeder or pet shop), he/she
knows its been rescued? You will never find a more loyal
friend then that who knows you just rescued him/her!
Isn't just this one fact alone enough to make you want
to rescue/adopt instead of purchasing that cute puppy
in the window who will surely grow up into an adult dog anyway?

1) About chaining or tethering your dog:
Well you say "my dog is an outside dog and prefers
to be outside 24/7 he has a dog house and food and my
parents always did that no matter the weather conditions
outside, dogs for thousands of years have been ok with
that, and I work all day so what should I do?" None of
these are legitimate excuse. Just don't get a dog if you
plan on doing that. If you get one as a cheap alarm system,
please consider investing in an alarm system that doesn't
feel pain, heat or cold. They aren't that expensive and not
cruel to an animal. The fact: we have domesticated dogs over
thousands of years, so they are no longer as able to deal
with harsh weather conditions such as cold or heat as much
as you think. This is an old school mentality, and from many
instances in history, old school mentalities must change and
have changed in other areas, so why not in this one?

-Please Google: "chaining your dog" to get REAL facts about
this horrible and cruel practice.

2) 99% of pets in this country should be spayed/neutered:
Your pet is no different!
Think of the misery and cruelty you will be preventing.

-Some 70,000 puppies and kittens are born every day in the U.S.

-Between four million and six million pets are euthanized
every year because they are homeless.

-That means between 11,000 and 16,000 pets are euthanized
every day simply because they are homeless.

-An animal in a shelter is killed every 1.5 seconds.

-Only one animal in 10 born in the U.S. gets a good
home that lasts a lifetime.

These alarming statistics present a good enough reason,
all by themselves, for preventing more pet animal births.
Simply put, the widespread failure to spay or neuter dogs
results in homelessness, misery, cruelty, and death.

3) Why adopt instead of buying from pet store OR breeder:

-Pet stores: dogs come from puppy mills, often with degenerative
diseases that don't come out till years down the road
bread in horrible conditions, mom and dads have their
vocal cords cut so owners of puppy mills don't get annoyed by
"annoying barking" often the barking is due to pain.
New born pups are in wire cages, sometimes have their paws
ripped off. Those are the pups that don't make it to the
pet store. Most die in agony, and select few end up at the pet shop.

-Breeders: Well you say "I buy from reputable breeders" even so
by buying a dog from a breeder, you just sealed in the
fate of 1 dog you could have saved from a local shelter.
"Well I want a pure breed dog" you say? want into any local shelter,
breed rescue, on any given day and you will find a pure breed dog
that was abandoned, or abused, save this pure breed dog!

-"Well I want a puppy because puppies are so cute, and i want
the puppy to know me from a young age..."
Plenty of puppies at shelters who are put to sleep every single
day because you just bought one!
And don't forget, puppies grow up very fast, so if you
are not in it for the long haul, if you only
like dogs when they are puppies, please spare the dogs
any future torture, and just don't get one. Its the hard, but
responsible thing to do if you are deep down inside a good person.
