Illegal dumping in Public Space may be reported to DPW Solid Waste
Enforcement and Education Program (SWEEP) at 645-8243. Depending on
which Ward you live in, you have a SWEEP Inspector that should look
through the debris (using gloves) for clues as to where and whom the
debris came from. You should question all the immediate neighbors to
see if anyone saw something, ask for any info on your local list serve.

I also recommend changing your driving route or walking route to and
from your home or neighborhood so that you go by the area that is
frequently used for illegal dumping so that you have a better chance
of catching them. ALWAYS get a license plate number!!!! Illegal
dumpers always return to the location used before? If you see the
dumping occurring (in progress) anywhere call 911 and MPD should
respond. If the dumping is on National Park property you may call the
Park Police (Rock Creek 426-7717 or general Park Police 619-7300) but
also call the Rock Creek maintenance division 895-6017.

Depending on what is dumped, it may be an environmental crime in this
case the environmental crimes unit may become involved. Video cameras
placed in windows of homes may be an option to try and catch the
culprits. Stay at home parents, dog walkers, mail carriers, UPS & Fed
EX delivery folks should be alerted as well. If you want the illegal
dumpers to go somewhere else you need to turn the heat up on them!

Using all of these methods and my own surveillance with binoculars we
were able to effectively stop illegal dumping here in Glover Park
where our community borders the National Park. If you would like some
experience help (with you involved) contact me at robertehyman@gmail.com

I had many kind responses to my original question, most suggesting
that we have grubs in
the lawn and critters are digging for them. Treated the lawn this
afternoon -- will report on
success or failure! JT

Could this be the parakeet that was lost on your list several weeks
ago? Samantha

Subject: [ChevyChase] Found Parakeet

My son and I found a blue and white parakeet this morning on the
way to Murch School. It was on the ground in the alley behind St.
Paul's church huddled up against the curb. It looked quite chilly, all
puffed up with head tucked away. I used to have parakeets, so I
carefully enclosed it with both hands and picked it up.

Although it appeared quite chilled, its bite was still pretty
healthy (!), so I hope that means it will be OK. With the help of the
friendly staff at the Auguste Montessori School (in the rear of St
Paul's), we got it situated in a shoe box lined with tissue paper on a
table in their office, and they were going to get it some water in a dish.

If you know who the bird belongs to, please call the Montessori
school at 202-237-1788. St Paul's is at 4900 Connecticut Ave at 36th
and Ellicott Streets, and the school entrance is around back.

I hope it gets back home safely.

Stolen Bikes

From: Oxana Holtmann <holoxana@gmail.com>

Yesterday two bicycles were stolen from our backyard at 43 Place. It
happened between 3PM and 6PM.

One of the bikes was chained and the chain was cut. Both bikes were
covered. So it was quite a daring stealing.

If somebody saw some guys (there were probably two of them for two
bikes) riding bikes during that time, please let us know. One bike was
a SPECIALIZED Dark Gray model, another red color.
