If you happen to have crows in your neighborhood it could be those critters digging for grubs. They make a huge mess of things. Possums, squirrels, and raccoons will also.

The last time I saw this kind of damage it was from crows digging for
grubs. The grubs are
the larval stage of ladybugs, and they eat the roots of lawn grass. I
don't know that crows are
the only birds that dig for and eat grubs.

Hope this helps...

My neighbor just told me last night that when she was out jogging about
a month ago, a man in a white van stopped and asked her if she had
anything that she needed to have hauled. She said that he seemed as if
he had been drinking or on drugs. She quickly said no and kept
jogging. This clicked for her after both her husband and another
neighbor saw one or two men in a white van dumping trash and yard waste
two places in our alley last week. (And not in our trash cans, either -
right in the middle of the alley!)

Someone has been selling their "hauling" services to our neighbors,
then driving a couple blocks away and dumping whatever they just
cleaned out elsewhere.

My nanny is looking for additional work in the AU Park/Chevy Chase
area from about 5 to 7pm or so, weeknights. She is seeking to support
a family with any of the following: childcare, meal preparation,
laundry, light housecleaning, etc. She also has a drivers license and
is insured under our car insurance.

Gracia has been working for us for three years, and does all of these
things quite well! She is wonderful with our children, extremely
helpful around the house and is an excellent cook. She will continue
to work for us full time, but is looking to pick up some additional
work hours as she is no longer taking night classes. If you would
like to get more details from me, please contact me at
snee_elizabeth@bah.com. To contact Gracia directly, please call her
cell phone: 202-657-9361.
