Dear neighbors,

We need to replace a silted-up French drain and have some other smaller
issues concerning our basement and water. Washington Checkbook suggests one
get advice from an inspector before calling a company. Anyone have any
recommendations for an inspector who has competence in particular with
basement water issues?

Thanks,
Steven and Micki

Historic Chevy Chase nomination on hold

Posted by: "kathysmithindc" ksmith1804@starpower.net   kathysmithindc

From: onejollybird <onejollybird@yahoo.com>

ANCs 3E and 3/4G along with the Chevy Chase Citizen's Association
have agreed to a request from the Board for Historic Chevy Chase DC
(HCCDC) to postpone the community survey and two meetings concerning
their draft nomination for an historic district. HCCDC recognized
the concerns and heightened tension in the community and felt it
best to defer their nomination for 6 -12 months.

ANC 3E agreed to the request with the understanding that HCCDC
would provide the community ANCs and citizen association with a new
90 day period during which the survey and community meetings will be
conducted. We specifically required that this 90 day period does
not occur during the summer months but rather in the spring or fall
of 2008. Additionally, if HCCDC has not moved forward with a
nomination for historic designation by September 2008, the ANCs and
the Chevy Chase Citizen Association reserve their rights to proceed
with the community survey and document the results for the public
record.

The pending community survey has therefore been postponed until
HCCDC decides to move forward with their project.

Amy McVey
Chair, ANC 3E

Mover Recommendation

We need a personal referral for a reputable company for a move from AU Park
to Pennsylvania at the end of November. We would prefer a recommendation from
someone with a fairly recent experience!

Sandwich volunteer for Friendship Place

For the past 12 years, I have been making 15 to 20 sandwiches (NOT peanut
butter and jelly) on the first Monday of each month for Friendship Place for
lunch for the clients who come for medical appointments. Starting December, is
there anyone who could take this over? There also might be the need on another
Monday of the month as well.

The clients really look forward to a good sandwich and it is a big factor in
their showing up for these important appointments. I recommend this very
rewarding and easy way to help the Community Council for the Homeless at
Friendship Place! I am glad to answer your questions on the logistics or any other
details. I hope you can help. Thanks.

Gardener/Yard Work recommendation

Posted by: "wbbruno" wbbruno@yahoo.com   wbbruno

I would like to recommend a very hard working and effective gardener
Renee Hernandez. He will also do general yard work, mulching, weeding,
mowing, trimming, cutting tree limbs etc. You can call me, Will Bruno,
for a reference at 202.669.0280 or you can call him directly, Rene
Hernandez, 202.368.3064. Renee is a native spanish speaker, but speaks
enough english for us to communicate, just speak slowly and he
understands every time.

I and some neighbors have had really good experiences with
Turf Center Lawns in Spencerville, MD. Phone 301-384-9300
or 301-384-6300. They're good at fixing water problems.

ISO Heavy Lifters

From: Jan Phalen <janphalen@verizon.net>

I need 3 heavy lifters for approximately an hour (at the same time) to
carry
boxes, bags, and hanging clothes from attic to second floor (1 floor
down ).
And then, I need the lifters back a few weeks later after I pack up the
summer clothes, etc. to carry boxes, bags, and hanging clothes back to the
attic.

This is a good job for high school/college students to pick up $50 each.

I live in the 4400 block of Fessenden.

Personal Safety in Your Vehicle
http://www.mpdc.dc.gov/mpdc/cwp/view,a,1240,q,547879,mpdcNav_GID,1552,mpdcNav,|.asp
The Metropolitan Police Department offers the following personal
safety tips to help protect you when you are in your vehicle.

a.. Always have your keys out and ready before leaving a building to
approach your vehicle. Searching through a purse or briefcase after
you've reached your car provides criminals an excellent opportunity to
sneak up on you.

b.. Be especially alert when leaving stores or shopping malls for your
vehicle. This is a time when criminals know you are carrying cash,
checkbooks, credit cards, or other valuables.

c.. Look around and inside your vehicle before you get in. If you are
concerned for any reason, simply walk past your car and call for help.

d.. Lock your door immediately upon entering the vehicle. Make this
your first action-even before you put the key in the ignition. And
lock your door every time you get into your car-even if you are going
for only a short ride.

e.. Check your surroundings before getting out of your car. If
something or someone strikes you as out of place or threatening, drive
away. If it's dark, go to a well-lighted, heavily traveled area.

f.. Use a two-piece key ring with your car keys separate from your
other important keys. Give parking valets or mechanics your car keys
only. Supplying the entire set of keys creates an opportunity for
duplicates to be made.

g.. Avoid stairwells in parking garages. Try walking down the auto
ramp instead. As long as you watch for cars, the ramp can be much safer.

h.. Avoid talking on your cellular phone while you drive. Concentrate
on your driving, not your conversation. If you have to make a call,
pull over to the side of the road.

i.. If you're making a call using your cell phone, never discuss
important information such as travel plans or credit card numbers. For
less than $100, anyone can buy scanning equipment and listen in on
your cellular phone conversations.

j.. Report any suspicious activity or person immediately to the
Metropolitan Police Department at 311. Or, if it is an emergency, dial
911.

For more information about these and other personal safety tips, or to
request a presentation from a crime prevention expert, contact the
