DPW Announces New Graffiti Removal Voucher Program

DPW Announces New Graffiti Removal Voucher Program

From: Grant, Linda P. (DPW) <linda.grant@dc.gov>

The DC Department of Public Works announced September 7 its Graffiti
Removal Voucher Program for District residents and business owners
whose property has been defaced by graffiti. Beginning Monday,
September 10, they may call the Citywide Call Center at 202.727.1000
to obtain a voucher to be redeemed at McCormick Paints located at 15th
and P Streets, NW and Duron Paints located at 14th and Clifton
Streets, NW.

The paint store will match the color of the paint of the property and
will provide property owners with paint, primer, a brush, roller, pan,
drop cloth and graffiti scrubs free of charge.

The voucher program is part of Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's aggressive
graffiti abatement plan, announced in June 2007, which will allow the
city to remove graffiti on private property more quickly and help
property owners remove graffiti themselves.

"Offering property owners the voucher for paint and other materials is
a fast way to remove graffiti, which is a rising problem in our city,"
said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. "The voucher program also
will relieve some of the financial burden that causes residential and
business property owners to delay removing the graffiti themselves.
Not only will this program help to keep our city cleaner, it will help
us keep it safer."

For more information, or to receive a graffiti removal voucher, call
the Citywide Call Center at 202.727.1000. Property owners should
expect to receive the voucher within five days of making the request,
and they will need to sign the voucher when they redeem it at the
paint store.

DDOT EXPANDS ONLINE HISTORIC PHOTO GALLERY

Images Trace History of City Streets and Capture Life in Motion

(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT)
today announced it has expanded its online historic photo gallery on
the DDOT Web site, creating a unique journey through the District's
transportation past.

The new posted images include Wisconsin Avenue during "rush hour" in
1960 (a nearly empty Wisconsin Avenue compared to today's rush hour),
South Capitol Street near the new Nationals ballpark, H Street NE, and
Pennsylvania at Minnesota Avenue, Southeast.

In addition to 25 historic photographs posted on the DDOT Web site
earlier this year, DDOT yesterday posted an additional 25 photographs
taken from the DDOT archives.

The people, buildings, street signs, cars, streets, highways, trucks,
streetcars, traffic patterns and street lights are captured as they
were in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.

"These historic images are a fantastic way for the public to view the
history of transportation in the District of Columbia," said Emeka
Moneme, Director of DDOT. "From Wisconsin Avenue to Pennsyvlania
Avenue, from Northeast to Southeast, these fantastic images illuminate
our city's transportation history. Tracking our transportation history
helps us learn from the past and look into the future."

The images help document the District's transportation history and are
one aspect of DDOT's preservation efforts to collect and conserve
photos, studies, reports, plans, design and construction documents,
drawings, and artifacts.

These preservation efforts are part of a history project sponsored by
the DDOT Research and Technology Development Office with support from
the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

"Transportation Planning & Research," and click on Historical Photo
Archives.

college group house parties in AU Park ?

The landlords aren't going to do a darn thing. We
have had similar experiences in the 8 plus years that
we have lived in AU Park. I have called the
landlords, written letters, etc. I believe there is
a contact at AU where you can lodge a complaint
against the off-campus students.

Test of GU Campus Alert System

From: ANC 3B <anc3b@aol.com>

There will be a test of Georgetown University's Campus Alert System on
Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at Noon for 2 minutes. This alert
system sounds like a train's steam whistle.

In the event of a real emergency, the Campus Alert System would sound
in a series of intermittent five-second blasts, for a total of 15
minutes.

group house parties and noise ordinances

I'm interested in the answers to this one, including how to discover and
contact an absentee landlord. It's hard to ask the landlord to get involved if
you don't know who he or she is, or where they live, unfortuately.

I'm also interested in the subject of noise more generally, since in our
neighborhood power tools and leaf blowers are frequently even more intrusive
than rowdy parties. It seems like there should be some sort of restriction on
the hours these things can be used but, if there is, no one seems to know or
care.

Laptop Computer Needed

Posted by: "pactrad1" lb1119@aol.com   pactrad1

Tue Sep 11, 2007 6:59 pm (PST)

One of our World War II veterans (92 years old) at the Armed Forces
Retirement Home in DC has been writing his (intensely interesting) life
story. He has written some 250 pages by hand, but is no longer able to
do that. He taught himself to type on an old manual typewriter, but
we (AFRH volunteers) believe that he can learn to use a laptop
computer. We are looking for a reasonably good laptop (donation or
loaner) that has MS Word on it. As it will only be used for word
processing, no Internet capacity is required. We volunteers will
arrange to work with him to help him learn to use it.
