Eldbrooke Church is up for sale. There is a bidder. To get exact
information one should contact Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church. Ask for
the business office. The phone number is 202-363-4900. I'm sure you can
get answers to whether or not Eldbrooke will become a historic presevation
building.

Questions RE:  Historic Application for Eldbrooke Church

The question for me comes prior to the questions raised, SHOULD Eldbrooke
be given historic status? How can this be stopped? To me, the building,
while quite interesting looking, is unattractive on the outside and certain
unwieldy on the inside. My concern is what would happen to the cemetery?

historic landmark application for Eldbrooke Church

Eldbrooke United Methodist Church merged with Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church in 2005, and Metropolitan subsequently assumed ownership of the building. Since then the Tenleytown Historical Society has met many times with officials at Metropolitan. While Metropolitan did not agree to co-sponsor the landmark nomination, church officials have not actively opposed it. In an e-mail of August 8, 2007, the attorney for Metropolitan stated that Metropolitan is completing negotiations with a buyer, but that confidentiality requirements preclude their revealing the name of the buyer until the contract is final. The attorney further stated that he is "not aware of any issues with the proposed use of the property and the historic designation."

From: Jim Greene <jpgreene@erols.com>

The congregation has been absorbed in Metropolitan
Methodist. The building (ca 22000 sq. ft.) and adjacent 23-24 space
parking lot (ca 17000 sq. ft.with driveway off River Road) was put up
for sale through Lincoln Properties, asking price $ 6.1 M. The
cemetery behind is apparently controlled by a separate association and
is not part of the deal. The Current reported a couple of weeks ago
that the was a sale contract ? no price indicated, name of purchaser
not given.

I was told recently that the purchaser may be AU. The same
source told me that AU purchased the row of business condos along 42nd
Street, makingb it a logical buyer for the Eldbrooke property. How a
sale to AU or anyone will interact with the effort to slap the
"historic" label on the [property remains to be seen.

This may be the next subject of community meetings and
struggles over future use of a significant property.

Separately I will forward added information go you.
