Parking Signs -- Concern

I am concerned about the cavalier way people write about putting no
parking signs up. While it might sound good to some, I'm sure the
folks that find them in front of their homes are not happy. It seems
to me that just a few people are driving the issue of traffic control
without consideration of the impact on the affected neighbors.

When someone pushed for zoned parking on Fessenden St between River Rd
and 46th it affected those of us on River Rd that have parked on
Fessenden since the 1960's.

Because River Rd has no zone restrictions we can't get zone stickers.
Parking was never a big problem on Fessenden. A few vocal residents
don't like the hard working guys that park there to work at the old
Woodies site (They only took vacant places at 5:30-6:00 AM and were
gone by 2:30-3:00)

The whole traffic control thing seems to be over done.

We live in an urban area. When crossing streets ? A car is ether
coming or its not. It's not rocket science to expect the pedestrian to
wait for a clear period to cross.

I have to wait longer to cross at controlled intersections than I do
waiting for clear time at cross walks to cross River Rd. Yet some
would have lights at all intersections if they could. If they wait for
the walk signal they will see that they wait longer then they would
wait for a clear period to cross.

Hopefully there will be a voice of reason in this debate.

Thanks, Larry

armed robbery in the 'hood

At about 10pm on August 11 two young women walking to 47th street from
the metro were robbed at gunpoint by two men on 44th St between
Verplanck Place and Warren Street. They gave them their purses and
were not injured but were very upset by the experience and took refuge
in the house on that corner of Verplanck. The homeowner called the
police and two officers came immediately, followed by a third, and
spent an hour talking to the victims. We have had no word of a
follow-up from the police and would like to know if this is a pattern
in our area. I do not believe the victims saw a car following them,
but the police went out to look for the perpetrators and could not
find them so perhaps they did have a car.
