HOLIDAYS
From: Solberg, Andrew (MPD) <Andrew.Solberg@dc.gov>

I would like to invite all residents, as we move into the holiday
season, to contact us if you plan on leaving town for any period
of time and would like us to check on your house occasionally
while you are away.

If you contact your PSA lieutenant (PSA boundary maps and
contact information for the lieutenants are available on the MPD
website), directly and give us your address and dates you will be
away, and a local contact number if there is one, we will try to
have the PSA officers ride by and check on your house as often
as possible to make sure things are okay.

Also remember to cancel the newspaper and arrange with a
neighbor to have any other delivery items, or advertising flyers
or locally delivered papers, picked up and not left in front of the
house or attached to doorknobs, etc. You should also leave
some lights on, and a radio or tv, or have a friend or neighbor
stop by every few days so it appears that someone is still inside
and the house is not deserted for the holidays.
Andy Solberg
Commander, Second District

GARBAGE COLLECTION PROBLEM
From: <nancyrleroy@rcn.com>
Does anyone else have trouble getting the garbage collectors to
pick up neatly-filled bags (either paper or plastic) set out in the
alley next to the large garbage containers? Twice I've had to call
the mayor's office to get this stuff picked up after waiting as
long as three weeks for the Tuesday collectors to take it way.
As a dog walker, I have also noticed large collections of bags
moldering away in some nearby alleys. My block is 46th St
between Fessenden and Ellicott.
Nancy LeRoy

ACE HARDWARE STORE
From: Figuli, Samuel <sfiguli@hgl.com>
The Ace Hardware store that opened beneath the Container Store
[on Wisconsin Avenue] is definitely a welcome addition to the
neighborhood. It has most of the basics a good hardware store should
have and the staff are extremely attentive and helpful. They greet you
with walkie-talkies and you just name what you're looking for and they
direct you to where you need to go. The location and the signage for it
are a bit hidden, so I wanted to make sure the community knows about it.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

**** DOG SITTER NEEDED
From: Burchard.Beth@epamail.epa.gov
We're looking for someone to watch our dog (in your home) while we are
away from December 26th-30th. If your kid(s) have been asking for a
dog, this might be a good opportunity to show their actual commitment
while also earning some spending money. Sparkie is a gentle black
lab/Dalmatian mix, house-trained and leash-trained. She's rather old
(14), so she would be better suited to a home with older (6+) children. A
house-sit is also possible if you know someone very responsible.
Please call or email Beth or Robert if you're interested. 202.686.5355
(h) or 202.549.4496 (c).
Thanks!

**** MOVIE PROJECTOR NEEDED
From: Jim Greene <jpgreene@erols.com>
I am looking at family memorabilia, including a large collection
of Super 8 or regular 8 mm home movies taken by my late mother.
Unfortunately, her projector disappeared somewhere along the line.
I would like to borrow, rent or buy one, if someone has one available.
Most modern ones show both 8 and Super 8.
Jim Greene, (202) 966-0731, jpgreene@erols.com.

**** CONTRACTOR RECOMMENDED
From: Heneson, Lynne (ACF) <lynne.heneson@acf.hhs.gov>
I would like to recommend an excellent contractor who recently
did a beautiful job with some plumbing and tile work in my
bathroom. His name is Mike Smith and he can be contacted
at woodsmith@frontier.net or at 301 807 5240. Mike is bright,
communicative, reliable, creative, and a hard worker. His prices
are also reasonable. He is a complete pleasure to work with, and I
commend him to you for any kitchen, bathroom, or general home
remodeling project. Please let him know you got his name from me.
Lynne Heneson

**** FINISH CARPENTER NEEDED
From: Steve Kopperud <skopperud@poldir.com>
We're looking to build a window seat and bookcase/entertainment
unit. We need to find a top-rate finish carpenter to can make this
happen. Please forward any names and contact info if you've had
a superior experience with a craftsman of this type.
Thanks. Steve Kopperud (slk4611@msn.com)

**** CABINET MAKER RECOMMENDED
From: Kathy Smith
I recommend Jeff Seeley. He is a master cabinet maker who lives in
the 'Hood and did a beautiful job for me. It was a small job which
most people would not bother with and his rates were very reasonable.
His phone # is 363-4151.
Kathy

**** PUPPIES FOR CHRISTMAS
From: lori rolnick <lrol@aol.com>
Beautiful puppies for adoption. They are currently 6 weeks old and are
ready for adoption. Mom (Olivia) is a mix of several things..medium
size..pretty redish brindle coat. She is extremely sweet and has been
taken in by a friend of mine with her pups. We think Dad might be a lab.
The pups are very small but seem to have a lab type coat.
Sponsored by Homeward Trails. Adoption fee of $95.00
Would love to place them in pairs but will consider single placements
Email Lrol@aol.com for pictures.

**** NEED A GERMAN TUTOR?
From: andersenan@aol.com
I have been attending the German School here in DC
for 12 years now, and I am fluent in both English and
German. I'm 18 and a senior in high school. Whether
you need help with pronunciation or grammar - or
if you just need someone to study with you on a
regular basis - I would love to be of assistance.
Just send me an e-mail: westietiger@aol.com

**** BACKUP FROM DRAIN
From: Hahagerty@aol.com
We too would be happy to learn of any responses to Heather Wheeler's
query [in previous COMMUNIT-E] about dealing with backup from
an exterior basement stairwell drain.
Herb Hagerty (hahagerty@aol)
---------------------
Previous question was:
**** PLUMBING QUESTION
From: Wheeler, Heather <Heather.Wheeler@mail.house.gov>
In heavy rains, water backs up from our exterior basement
stairwell drain. It appears that the trap under the drain has
collapsed. Has anyone had this problem and, if so, what
was your repair experience?

**** VENDOR RECOMMENDATIONS
From: Richard Abbott <abbott1229@verizon.net>
I just had two good experiences with vendors recommended in
the COMMUNIT-E list:
--------
Plumber: We can recommend Sanford Kramer (formerly
Smallenbroek) for plumbing. They came on time, were neat
(he wore shoe covers in the house), and are reasonably priced.
You can't miss their gaudily-painted truck!
-------
Mason: We can add our voice to the recommendations of others
for John Coronas, who now calls his business J.C. Pride
Construction. John is an independent businessman --a very nice
gentleman from Portugal who does excellent work, charges
reasonable rates, and comes when he says he will or calls to
change the time if he can't make it (!). He does other work as
well -- we had him do some drywall work at the same time as
the masonry work on the chimney.
Richard Abbott

**** Brick Repair Needed
From: North, Percy <Percy.North@montgomerycollege.edu>
I am looking for someone to point the brick on the front of my house
and would appreciate any recommendations
Percy North

**** INFO ON CONTRACTOR REQUESTED
From: Joanne Levine <joannelevine@earthlink.net>
I would like to know if anyone has used either Case Design/Build
or Hopkins and Porter for home renovations or repairs. We are
planning to replace old windows, paint, and do some electrical
work. We would also be interested if anyone has used other firms
for those services.
Thanks.
Joanne Levine; joannelevine@earthlink.net.

otherwise receive gifts. All toys, for any age child, new or gently used, are

corporate sponsors or airtime, but year after year, our neighbors reach out
to these kids.

4340 Albemarle St., NW up until and including Friday, December 15th.

Donations can also be taken directly to Mt. Rona Church at 13th & Monroe
Streets, NW on the day of the party (Saturday, December 16th from 6 AM
