COMMUNIT-E
September 13, 2006

CONGRATULATIONS AND GOOD LUCK TO
ALL THE WINNERS OF TUESDAY’S PRIMARY.
MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO RAN BUT DIDN’T
WIN. YOU GAVE US CHOICES – ESSENTIAL FOR
TRUE DEMOCRACY.

YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED THAT THE TOWER
IS FINALLY COMING DOWN!

OTHER LIST SERVES IN THE ‘HOOD
I urge everyone to subscribe to the other list serves
that pertain to our neighborhood as well as to
COMMUNIT-E. There may be some duplication
but you’ll get a good picture of the events and
issues of interest to this ‘Hood. Also, some of the
information will get to you long before the next
COMMUNIT-E comes out. Some of them are
the following. If you know of others that may be
relevant, please let me know. – Kathy Smith

**** MPD-2d@yahoogroups.com. This one
relates to 2nd District Police information and
local crime.

**** americanuniversitypark@yahoogroups.com

**** tenleytown@yahoogroups.com This
group is posting crime maps for Commander Andy
Solberg. The maps are at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tenleytown/files/PSA_Crime_Maps/2006-08/
but to view them you have to sign up at
tenleytown-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
The maps show the PSA, and where each type of crime
has occurred. This mapping of crime in a new program from
Commander Solberg and the location for map-viewing
is being fine-tuned as I write this. Other list serves might also
be carrying them. I believe that remains to be determined.

**** Cleveland-Park@yahoogroups.com

I urge you to subscribe to at least the first three list serves as well
as COMMUNIT-E if you live in PSA 202.

IN ADDITION TO THE MAPS:
From: Solberg, Andrew (MPD) <Andrew.Solberg@dc.gov>
Beginning Monday we will also send out weekly reports, in narrative
format, of the crimes that occurred the previous week, as some of you
have asked for. These will be rather generic, and will not include
specific addresses, victim or known suspect information, and any other
information that may compromise our investigations.
Thanks,
Andy Solberg
Second District

FULL CIRCLE
From : Kathy Smith
STREET SMART, the paper newsletter that preceded
COMMUNIT-E, was founded to give the community
information about crimes throughout what is now PSA 202.
Thanks to Commander Solberg and Chief Ramsey, crime information
will now be readily available from 2D. I may mention an occasional
incident but, from now on, crime data will be available from the list
serves carrying Andy’s maps and lists. There’s no longer a need for me
to publish that information in COMMUNIT-E.

QUESTION ABOUT AU PROPERTY
From: MGBPA@aol.com
I was surprised to learn that the parking lot at Balduccis on
New Mexico Avenue is owned by American University.
Does anyone know how much property AU own in our
neighborhood? Can we expect to have the same problems
that Foggy Bottom residents have continually with GW ?
It has been my impression that AU to date has not been the
most cooperative of neighbors.

TO GET A LIVE PERSON ON THE PHONE
From: edw3qc@comcast.net

Check out www.gethuman.com.

To find the toll-free phone number for any US-based company,
try calling 1-800-555-1212 or search Google for company name
plus "phone numbers". Or maybe even searching for the company
name and "president office" or "investor relations".

Tip: did you know that your phone company charges $1.49 or
more each time you call 411? Instead, try using 1-800-FREE-411.

For companies who try to hide their phone numbers, many
times the Google search will find a page from a disgruntled
customer who exposes the phone numbers for that company.
For example, see these gripe pages about Amazon.com and
PayPal and these for eBay.

For a public company, you could also try searching EDGAR.
The "10K" report includes information about corporate officers
and the official company mailing address.

You could also try looking up their contact information
via a "whois" database: internic, godaddy, whois.net, etc.

Once you have a phone number, here are some tips to try to
get through the computer to get to a live human:

1. Interrupt. Press 0 (or 0# or #0 or 0* or *0) repeatedly,
sometimes quickly. Unfortunately the same keystroke does
not always work for each company. Many IVRs will connect
to a human after a few "invalid entries", although some IVRs
will hangup.

2. Talk. Say "get human" (or "agent" or "representative") or
raise your voice, or just mumble. :) The IVR might connect
you to a human after one of these key or unknown phrases.

3. Just hold, pretending you have only an old rotary phone.

4. Connect to account collections or sales or account
cancellation; they always seem to answer quickly. First ask
them for their name and rep number (so they know you are
writing it down, and thus so they are more likely to help you.)
Then ask them to transfer you to the department you need.
Sometimes they will put you ahead of the queue, although
sometimes they will send you to the end (and thus in those
cases this tip is useless).

5. Toll call. For credit cards, if the expected wait time is too
long, hangup and try to call back on their non-toll-free number,
as they often have shorter queues.

6. Selecting the option for Spanish will sometimes get you
a bilingual human more quickly than if you just waited for an
English-only operator.

When you do finally find a human, ask them how to connect
directly the next time (in case your call gets disconnnected etc),
and be sure to tell us so we can then list their number here. :-).

If one of the above does not work, see the gethuman database.

PETS IN THE ‘HOOD

**** From: Steve Kopperud <skopperud@poldir.com>
DOGS
A recent poll by a major pet supply association shows nearly 80%
of us consider our dogs to be "part of the family." This is
heartwarming, but when was the last time you allowed a member
of your family to relieve him/herself on someone else's property?
Living on a T-alley between Windom and Warren, I enjoy encounters
with neighbors as they walk their dogs. I also enjoy dogs. What I
don't enjoy is looking at the burned-out patches in my lawn or
cleaning up after those who allow their dogs to roam off-leash, do
their business, and then just wander on without performing the proper
"follow-up" with their pets. I've observed folks who watch their animal
go up onto someone's lawn, then turn their back as if to give the animal
privacy, then stroll on down the alley. I can only imagine these
folks figure if they didn't see the deed, they're not responsible.
I've had folks tell me "it's natural" for their dog to go wherever
it chooses, yet I'm guessing that naturalness does not extend to
their yards. I've had folks tell me their dog is too old be leashed,
whatever that means, and I've had folks, who when caught allowing
their off-leash animal to go on someone's lawn, just stare
incomprehensibly when confronted. The bottom line is this:
It is illegal in the District to allow a dog to roam off-leash, no
matter how much control you think you have of the animal or
how close you are to the animal as it wanders across private
property. It's also a potential danger to the toddlers and young
kids playing in our neighborhood and the presence of dog
droppings presents a health hazard, as well. It is inconsiderate
in the extreme to allow your dog to relieve itself on someone
else's property because this makes the act of dog walking easier
for you. A pet is a responsibility that carries legal obligations.
You are responsible for the damage the animal does. Please take
dog walking seriously, keep your animal leashed and off private
property and make sure you clean up after pet by carrying the
souvenirs of your walk home with you, rather than tossing them
in someone else's trash can.
Thanks for letting me vent.

THREE FABULOUS CATS ISO LOVING HOMES

"June" is a beautiful, petite tortie with the sweetest, most
demure disposition. She was rescued from a trailer park
when her owners moved and left her behind. She had a litter
of kittens in the bushes and managed to survive on trash by the
dumpster. What a wonderful little soul. She has a funny tail that
curls like a husky. Seems OK with other gentle cats. Please
consider this special young cat.

"Kitkat" is a lovely blue cream tortie. She has emerald green
eyes and will turn herself inside out for a little attention. She loves
to be brushed. She has been stuck in a cage for soooooo long and is
so overdue for a home to call her own. She was rescued from a high
kill shelter where she was left due to an allergic grandkid! She has
not allowed this rejection to get her down. She is playful and loves
to bat around furry toy mice. This cat is a total doll! She does not
do very well at adoption fairs which has been working against her.
Please come meet Kitkat, she WILL charm you.

"Audrey" is a gorgeous Maine Coon mix. She has a thick lush
black coat and golden eyes. Like June, she and her kittens (a pair of
Maine Coons who are identical to mom and are also available for
adoption) were left behind to fend for themselves at a trailer park.
Now they are safe, with a steady supply of food and warm places to
snuggle. Their problems will REALLY be behind them after they
find their forever homes. Audrey is about a year old. She has a
very intelligent expression and looks very deeply into your eyes.
I think she cannot believe her luck at being out of the dumpster!

------------
All these cats are spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and tested negative
for feline leukemia and feline aids. Contact darnot@aol.com for more
info and for pictures!
