I’M DISAPPOINTED WITH ADRIAN FENTY
From: Kathy Smith

Combating crime takes a lot of fine tuning of  various prevention
and reaction techniques. There is no one fix for everything. One
of the most important tools is to be able to identify those individuals,
including juveniles, who commit crimes and to “keep an eye” on
them.

The City Council recently had the opportunity to provide the police
with several new tools, including much needed access to information
about crime-committing juveniles. They did so, with the troubling
absence of Councilmember Fenty’s support.

According to a Washington Post story by Elissa Silverman,
(Friday, July 21):

Although most of his colleagues emphasized
the urgency in taking action, Fenty said he
believed that the measures would do little to
          make the city safer.

"I agree there is a spike in crime, but what the
community needs the most is much better policing
         of the neighborhoods," Fenty said.

The reason for my disappointment is that I believe it is always
easy and reasonably popular to state that one is in favor of making
the police work more efficiently, etc, etc. However, to say something
like that and to then refuse to give them tools to work more effectively
is  hypocritical. The request for access to information about juvenile
offenders has been sought by the police for some time. If they want
it that badly, they must believe that it is important. I  give the
police credit for knowing what they need because they see the
need every day. Ditto for the extended curfew and cameras.

If these new tools don’t work, they won’t be extended after the
ninety day period. So why not let the police try them and see
what happens?

I appreciate those councilmembers who decided to work with the
police rather than to criticize them and then refuse to help.

POLE CAMERAS
From:     Solberg, Andrew (MPD) <Andrew.Solberg@dc.gov>
In the upcoming weeks, the Chief of Police will make determinations
as to where in the city as many as 23 new pole cameras will be placed.
Many of you have asked about where they will be placed, and we here
at the Second District would like your input. These cameras are for
crime surveillance, not red light running.
Please email me with your suggestions and recommendations, and I
will compile a list to forward to the Chief.
Thank you,
Andy Solberg

10 PM CURFEW GOES INTO EFFECT
ON MONDAY NIGHT, JULY 31
From:  reports@crimereports.com
Mayor Williams announced this week that on Monday, July 31, an
alternative curfew for young people age 16 and under goes into effect.
Beginning this evening, curfew hours will be set from 10 pm to 6 am,
every day of the week.  These curfew hours will last for 30 consecutive
days and expire on Wednesday, August 30 at 11:59 pm.  After that date,
curfew hours will revert to the hours currently in place pursuant to the
Juvenile Curfew Act, unless a subsequent Mayor’s Order is issued to
extend the 30-day period.

WARD 3 PARKING PASS FOR NEW CAR
From:     shrlch <hsharlach@aol.com>
I just got a new car and it will take the dealer up to 60 days to get
me plates and a parking sticker. I checked some info from the DMV and
it only talks about 15 day non renewable permits for visitors. I would
appreciate any suggestions on how to get a pass and avoid tickets.

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING
From:     buddydc1 YINGLING <buddydc1@msn.com>

Here are safety considerations during heat waves that you should
seriously consider:
* drink plenty of fluids. Wear loose fitting light colored clothing
& a hat
* plan to spend the afternoon in an air-conditioned room
* plan any outdoor activities for early in the morning
* check up on elderly relatives & neighbors-these are the
people most at risk
* provide outside pets & livestock with plenty of fresh water
* never leave pets or children in parked cars-even with the
windows open. Temps inside parked cars can reach 130
degrees in only a few minutes.

An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of
dangerously hot temps will occur. The combination of hot
temps & high humidity will combine to create a dangerous
situation in which heat illnesses & fatalities are likely.

Looking for good tile work for basement
I recently had a flood in my basement which ruined a wall-to-wall
carpet and some linoleum.  I want to replace those floor coverings
with something more able to withstand water. I'm told tile is the way
to go.  Any suggestions for people or companies that do tile work
or alternative treatments?

Roofer recommendation
This is to serve as a very hgh recommendation of George Ugaz
and his staff of Superior Home Improvements as outstanding roofers!
Not only is George a pleasure to deal with, he is also highly professional,
a good communicator, on-time, and a very hard working individual.
His staff worked diligently in replacing a shingle roof on my home and
garage, as well as installing incredible new gutters.  My house now looks
as good as new! I whole-heartedly recommend his business to anyone
seeking roofing, gutter replacement or cleaning, painting or window
replacement work.
His information is as follows:

A/C units urgently needed by Ward 7 family
I'm putting out this urgent request on behalf of the parent of some of
my former students. This mom and her family (6 children) are
sweltering in the heat in their new home in Ward 7, and seriously need
at least one air conditioner (though more would gladly be welcomed).
All their possessions were stolen after their former home was
destroyed by a stolen Humvee that crashed into it in the wee hours of
the morning on May 24, 2006. So, if anyone has an extra air
conditioner laying around, unused, would you please call Ms. Vera
Merkerson at 399-3529.
