NEW TRADESMEN COMMUNITY RECOMMENDATIONS
Janet Bachman has updated the list of community repair, services,
etc. recommendations. Because of its length, I am sending it
only to the ANC3F web site, where it can be looked at and
copied, if you wish, by clicking above heading or going to www.anc3f.org. Once there,
click on the ENTER link, then scroll down to the link that says
COMMUNIT-E & STREET SMART. Many thanks to Janet
for doing this update and to Robert Maudlin, ANC3F Web
Master for making it available. — Kathy Smith

NEW PSA 202 MONTHLY MEETINGS – POLICE
From: Aiello, Robert (MPD) <Robert.Aiello@dc.gov>

As many of you are aware, the area of ANC 3E closely
corresponds to the boundaries of Patrol Service Area 202.
I regularly attend the ANC 3E monthly meeting on the
second Thursday of each month at 7:30 PM to provide
the commissioners and residents a briefing on criminal
and police related events in their neighborhood. We also
discuss traffic issues, etc.

Beginning this Thursday, June 8, at 6:30 PM, just prior to the
ANC meeting, each month I will be hosting a meeting at that
same location, St Mary’s Church. The purpose of this regularly
scheduled meeting is to provide additional time and opportunity
for concerned residents to discuss problems in their
neighborhood with members of PSA 202. The sessions are
designed to solve problems together.
Lt. Robert Aiello

CONSTRUCTION WORK AT SECOND DISTRICT
From: Solberg, Andrew (MPD) <Andrew.Solberg@dc.gov>

Contractors will be replacing the deck area that surrounds the
Second District station. Construction will take up to four months,
and during that time the off-street visitor parking spaces in the
front of the building will not be available. We have posted temporary
“Emergency No Parking—Police Visitors Only” signs along the station
side of Idaho Avenue for visitors who need to visit 2D for permits,
questions, reports, etc. DDOT is assessing the possibility of permanent
(during the construction phase) signs here. There are about five or six
parking spaces on Idaho, which, from observations during the first day,
seem to meet the needs of our guests well.
We are asking that all nearby residents refrain from
parking in this area, and that the spaces be kept
available for people on business at 2D.
Thanks for your understanding,
Andy Solberg
Commanding Officer, Second District

HARDWARE STORE NOW OPEN
I was in the new hardware store (beneath Best Buy and Container
Store) the other day and was very impressed with both the variety
of goods and with the helpfulness of its youthful staff. It’s really
nice to finally have a hardware store in the ‘Hood.

2 FREE ZEBRA FICHES AVAILABLE.
My kids have lost interest in their little pets, and our birds are in need
of a new, loving owner. They are very cute, make sweet chirping noises
(but not too noisy), very easy to take care of, come equipped with a large
cage (roomy enough for a finch family) and plenty of food and cage litter.
Please Email or call me if interested - marenhs@hotmail.com

PAINTER RECOMMENDATION
We just had a great experience with Mike Magor, who repainted several
large areas and did extensive touch-up work to correct a disastrous job
by another painter recommended on this list (avoid Mike Johnson!). Mike
M. is fast, precise, neat, considerate, and thoroughly pleasant to work
with. We hired him on an hourly basis because of the disjointed nature
of the job, but his total charges worked out to less than the other bids
we received. Our work was all interior painting, although he does
exteriors too. His number is 202-483-8432.

NEIGHBORHOOD FAMILY NEEDS TEMPORARY HOME
We are a family of four, a 15 year old and a 9 year old and two
adults. We are renovating for the summer and need a place to
live some of the weeks of the summer. We may be traveling
and some of us will be away for part of the time, so we don't
need a lot of space. If anyone is looking for some housesitting
or a rental just for a few months, we probably will be able to
move back into our house in late September. We chose the
contractor partly because he has a strong track record on finishing
on time. Give a call if you are interested. The Rose family,

Looking for a rental in the AU park area for a short-term lease
while we renovate our house. We don't know of the exact start

months. Need a 2 or 3 bedroom place for our family of 4. We live
in the 'hood and want to stay nearby to keep an eye on our construction
and be near the kids friends. If you know of any places please let me
know at tscarrow@cadc.uscourts.gov.

I have extensive teaching experience both privately and in the

I can also strengthen your children's academic and/or language

MORE ON RESIDENTIAL PARKING PERMITS
From: Johanna Turner <joturner@speakeasy.net>

I have written Kathy Patterson and Carol Schwartz about
the problem and got a reply from KP, who forwarded my
letter to the mayor. I think we need to keep the discussion
before our elected officials and not just with each other.
In reading others' comments, I can only say that I don't have
a nanny or housekeeper, but I do have grown children and
friends from Virginia who have paid a painful price by being
ticketed for visiting me during the day. My neighbor was
recently ticketed because he had a loaner car from the
dealership while his own was being serviced! I always get
a temp permit if I have out of town guests staying over (once
finding a ticket on the visiting car when I returned from the
second district station with the permit and then losing the
appeal), but I absolutely believe that for what we are paying
in reassessed property taxes, it is not too much to ask for the
right to have a family member come for lunch without penalty.
I do not get why there should be a problem with having one
guest permit issued to each household at the time we are issued
our residential parking decals. This would meet the needs of
those who have the childcare problem as well as the rest of us.
We are certainly not going to turn them over to students or
commuters...

CAMP BROWN FOR NEEDY CHILDREN
From: Samantha Nolan <nolantutor@yahoo.com>
Dear Neighbors,
At this time of year, many families are making their plans for
summer camp. This year, please consider sponsoring
an inner city child for one week by making a donation to Camp Brown.

Camp Brown, a camp for inner city youth, is located in Scotland,
Maryland, about 100 miles from Washington. For some of the kids
who attend the camp, it is their first experience out of the city
and into the country. The camp is run by the Boys and Girls Club
of Greater Washington, in cooperation with the Metropolitan
Police Department. The Citizens Advisory Council (CAC) of MPD
helped to send 70 children to camp last year through donations from
the community. Each camper must pay $125 to attend this camp.
The rest of their costs are covered by the Boys and Girls Club. For
many of these kids, $125 is too much for them to pay. That is where
we come in.

Through our donations, we can cover their required costs and permit
those who do not have the required tuition, to have a camp experience.
This is a no frills camp, but is an experience that can change the lives
of these children. They learn to swim, fish, create art works, and
receive tutoring in subjects that have given them trouble during the
school year. They also learn to cooperate with others and to be leaders.
Commander Contee of MPD, and Council member Gray were both
Camp Brown kids.

Of all the charity work that I do, this is the one that means the most
to me. Having the chance to positively change the life of a child
possibly away from a life of crime and toward a life of service to
his or her community is a great gift. We are hoping to raise twice
as much money this year so that 140 children who otherwise could
not afford camp, can attend Camp Brown this year. You can help.

Through contributions from the Second District MPD Community,
one cabin was rebuilt at the camp last year. The cost to repair one
cabin is $10,000. The camp needs $500,000 to completely repair all
of the cabins and other out buildings, but every dollar we contribute
helps with some repair, or with the cost of sending a child to camp.
Each cabin we repair makes it possible to send 80 more kids to
camp during the summer (8 children per week for 10 weeks).
If you would like to contribute to the Camp, you can make checks
payable to 6D MPD CAC - Camp Brown. This is the 6th District
MPD Citizens Advisory Council which is a 501C3. You will receive
a letter from Camp Brown for your taxes. If you would like to mail
your check to me, my address is 2940 Northampton Street, NW, 20015.
Thanks for your help. Samantha Nolan, Chair, 2D MPD CAC

-----------
From: Kathy Smith – Camp Brown is also near and dear to me. Please
help a needy child this summer, if you can.

2D SUMMER CALENDAR OF MEETINGS
From: Samantha Nolan <nolantutor@yahoo.com>

The recent dedication of the Wall of Honor and the
Joe Pozell Community Room at 2nd District Police was
a big success. Chief Ramsey, ROC North Chief Newsham
and many others attended the dedication. If you didn't make
it to the dedication, please make sure you take a look at the
walls, and especially at the poem written by MPO Carter
which is at the center of the Wall of Honor.

During our meeting, which followed the dedication, we
discussed the summer schedule for our CAC meetings.
We decided to have only one summer meeting which will
be held on Wednesday, July 26th. There will be no meetings
in June or August, but National Night Out is scheduled for
August 1st

Have a good summer, and I hope to see you in July.
Samantha
