HARDWARE STORE COMING TO THE ‘HOOD
From: Gina Schaefer <ginaschaefer@yahoo.com>

It's official! I can now tell the world that Tenleytown
will be getting its very own community Ace Hardware store.

The store will be located on the garage level of 4500
Wisconsin Ave. right under the Container Store. It
will have approximately 8,000 square feet of retail
space and we'll cut keys, repair and make window
screens, cut glass, provide a custom paint matching
services and carry over 16,000 items.

We are hoping to open by early June at the very
latest. If anyone has any questions, they can reach
me at info@loganhardware.com.

NO SHORT TERM PARKING PERMITS FOR RESIDENTS
From: diane zeleny <dzeleny@hotmail.com>

We can no longer get short term parking permits for our nanny
due to the new computerization at the police station on Idaho Ave.
They send us downtown and downtown refuses to find a solution.
Now what? This is affecting many people who have nannies who come
to their homes to take care of kids. What can we do about this?

[From KS: I would start by calling or e-mailing 2D Commander
Robert Contee at <Robert.Contee@DC.gov>. His phone number is
282-0042. I’m wondering if the Police Department is getting out of
the business of issuing these permits. Possibly they are turning this over
to Dept. Of Motor Vehicles or Dept. Of Transportation ????]

DCRA ASSAULTS FREEDOM OF SPEECH
From: Kathy Smith

If you read Marc Fisher’s column in the Washington
Post yesterday (April 4), you will have learned that
the DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory
Affairs can penalize you $2,000 for putting up
a sign on your own lawn if that sign expresses
your personal opinion about something.

This happened to residents in AU Park for protesting
the subdivision of a nearby lot.

I consider this an appalling overreach by our city
government and urge you to read Marc Fisher’s column at:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/
2006/04/03/AR2006040301559.html

There is no way that we should allow DCRA the power to
curb free speech in this manner. This is disgraceful.

N8 BUS TO STOP RUNNING ON WEEKENDS
From: Nelson Jacobsen <nelsonjacobsen@yahoo.com>
Thru:: americanuniversitypark@yahoogroups.com

This is a notice from Metro about stopping the N8 bus service
on the weekends. This will impact workers and families in
AU Park, Spring Valley, and Friendship Heights.
http://www.wmata.com/about/community/B06-2.pdf

----------------------
From: Pagano, Penny (COUNCIL) <ppagano@dccouncil.us>

Councilmember Kathy Patterson would like to hear from
residents who use the N8 bus regarding WMATA's proposal
to eliminate all weekend service for this bus route. This bus
currently serves parts of Glover Park, Wesley Heights,
American University, Spring Valley, AU Park, Tenleytown-AU
Metro Station, and the Van Ness-UDC Metro station. WMATA
cites low ridership and available alternative services for some
segments of this route via the D2 on Edmunds Street and the N6
route on Massachusetts, Idaho, Cathedral, New Mexico and Nebraska
Avenues. WMATA says no alternative service will be available for
this route on Van Ness, Veazey, and Yuma Streets, adding that "the
number of passengers who board at stops along all three streets
averages less than one per trip." WMATA has scheduled a hearing
on proposed changes to the N8 and other routes on Tuesday, April 11,
2006 at 7:00 p.m. at the WMATA Headquarters Jackson Graham
Building at 600 Fifth Street, NW. Councilmember
Patterson welcomes comments from residents to be incorporated
in testimony for WMATA on this issue.

REPEAT OF GOOD IDEA FOR HELPING SAVE TREES IN 'HOOD
From: "Patrick G. Talmon" patrick.talmon@verizon.net

I have a suggestion to make to our neighbors: When going for walks in
the neighborhood I have noticed a number of trees partially, or in some
cases, completely, covered with ivy. While this may be pleasing to the
eye, ivy is a parasitical plant and will eventually kill a tree. What
to do? Carefully cut the ivy vines in a manner not to injure the tree
bark and pull away; what you cannot reach to pull down will eventually
die so long as you cut below. This will help preserve our dwindling
number of trees. Please pass the good word to your neighbors.
Thank you.

CRIMES IN THE ‘HOOD

**** From KS – Several readers mentioned the purse snatchings
listed in the last COMMUNIT-E. I understand from the police that
several arrests have been made. There is no easy mechanism for
me to connect arrests to crimes in our ‘Hood, but be aware that
arrests do happen and criminals are taken off the streets for at
least a while, from time to time. Too often we hear only about the
crimes and never learn of the arrests.

THEFT FROM AUTOS ALONG C&O CANAL TOWPATH
From: Kathy Smith

If you’re hiking, biking, paddling, etc., be aware that
thieves are breaking into cars parked near the canal.
They are using slim jims to open the cars and
then locking them again. You may not be aware that your
car was broken into until you discover later that your
credit card or other valuable item was taken. It’s best
to take credit cards and valuables of that sort with you.
Don’t leave anything of value in sight within the car.
Some trunks can be locked separately so that they can’t
be unlocked from within the car. If you have that type of
trunk locking mechanism, it’s a good idea to use it.

CARPOOLING
From: d and boo <d@noboo.com>

Hey neighbors -
I'm working on a project in Pentagon City and it turns out
that driving from McLean Gardens to Pentagon City is much
faster (20 minutes) than public transportation and price
equivalent. If you head that way too and are interested in
hitching a ride, email me and we'll figure out if our hours
are compatible. I’m not looking for a gas contribution; it's
just that driving solo makes me feel like an enemy to the
environment. Caveat: it's a non-smoking car with an NPR
default, new music welcome.
Thanks!

AMERICAN UNIVERSITY GROUP HOUSE ???
From: David Huffman <davidhuffman@msn.com>

Is anyone aware of a group house being renovated by American
University at the corner of Warren and Massachusetts? I
heard something about it just recently. It is supposedly just
across the street from the law school. This is the first group home
I am aware of that is owned by the University. Is it not
unusual for the school to buy a single family home and
convert it to a "dormitory"?

CATHY WISS ANNOUNCES BID FOR
WARD 3 COUNCIL SEAT
From: Carolyn Long <carolynlong@earthlink.net>

Cathy Wiss is an experienced leader with deep roots in
the community and a record of achievement in bringing
positive change. She is running to continue to fight for DC
residents in Ward 3 and throughout the city.

As an ANC commissioner--twice the chairman of ANC3F
--former president of the Tenleytown Neighbors Association,
and former president of the Friends of the Tenley Library,
Cathy has made a difference in our community--from
negotiating the townhouse project at Nebraska and Albemarle
St. that brought reasonable growth in scale with the
neighborhood to working with the developers and the
community on the successful Cityline and Best Buy
projects to working for an improved design for the playing
fields at Fort Reno.

Cathy is a lawyer and has been an active volunteer in the PTA,
the Audubon Naturalist Society, and Meals on Wheels. Cathy
and her husband have two children who graduated from Janney,
Deal, Wilson, and Edmund Burke schools. Cathy received her BA
from Smith College and a JD from Catholic University Law School.

"I want to serve Ward 3 in the Council because I care deeply
about our community," says Cathy. "I have worked hard to produce
real solutions to pressing problems. I will work for sensible land use
and transportation planning, improved schools and libraries, and
competence, openness, and accountability in government. Citizens
must have a voice in matters that touch their lives. I am ready to
listen--and to act."

"Cathy Wiss is by far the most qualified candidate in the race,"
said Cheryl Browning, Tenleytown community leader. "As more
and more people get to know Cathy, they will recognize how much
Ward 3 and the city need Cathy's sensible and effective leadership."

If you would like a copy of Cathy’s brochure, please call Matt Pavuk
at (202) 362-8241 and leave your mailing or e-mail address. You can
also contact Matt Pavuk at pavukmatt@aol.com.

MARY CHEH ANNOUNCES BID FOR
WARD 3 COUNCIL SEAT
From: campaign@marycheh2006.com

Mary Cheh is a tenured George Washington University
law professor, with professional experience working with
the D.C. Council. Mary is known as a common-sense
investigator with a firm belief in the power of oversight
and accountability. She has a record of providing real
solutions and making government and institutions work better.

Mary believes that every child in the District is entitled to a quality
education, that quality schools are the key to keeping families in the
City, and that giving every child a first-class education is a moral
imperative. She will be a Council member who uses the oversight
function to ensure that services, especially safety and emergency
services, are performed well all of the time. And she will insist that
the District be a good steward of the people’s money, because although
government is more than a business, it shouldn’t be run as less than a
business.

Mary served as special counsel to the Judiciary Committee in its
investigation of police handling of protests and demonstrations.

Flossie, at about 15 pounds, is a mouser extraordinaire.
She's a big country girl who is gentle with people but a
terror to rodents. She can be an indoor or an indoor/outdoor
cat. Her color is a pretty grey and black striped tiger. Her
owner died and she needs new territory to hunt and a new
home. She was well cared for and is spayed and up to date
on her shots.

**** FABULOUS COONIES + WEEGIES!
From: Darnot@aol.com
Trying to get the word out for some wonderful cats!
Please visit the website: http://www.fancycats.org and
click on "Cats & Adoptions" to find pictures of these
beauties! All these cats have been rescued from dire
circumstances. They are tested, UTD on shots, and
spay/neutered. Please take a peek! Send adopters!
Spread the word.

Max and Leo were left outside in November of 2005
when their owners moved away. Neighbors took care of
them until March 2006--they lived out in the cold all
winter. Neighborhood kids petted and played with them.
These boys are phenomenal, classic coonies--big boys
– Max is mostly white with a swash of black over his right
eye and Leo has the markings of a Weegie. These boys
absolutely love each other, and cannot be separated.

Trinity is a 5 year old WeegieX. She has a luscious brown
coat and bushy tail with white face and belly and mittens.
She was adopted as a kitten, but unfortunately returned five
years later because her owner is marrying someone allergic
to cats (terrible excuse!). She has been in the same place for
her whole life and cannot fathom what she did to deserve
having to adjust to life in a cage. She has been living with
Neo (a dapper tuxedo) and if at all possible would love to
get adopted with him.

Scruffy is a 2 year old Maine Coon mix--again with Weegie
twist. He is very sweet and social which is typical of the breed.
He loves to sit in laps--how about yours?

Gina is a very sweet 1 year old brown tabby CoonieX. Again,
as is typical of the breed, she is a loving and friendly lap cat.
Very social and cuddly. A really wonderful girl!

Shadow and Mattie are 6 months old. Shadow is a silver
CoonieX and Mattie is a solid grey CoonieX. Loveable babies
--sweet lap cats who crave attention. Please consider adopting
these two lovebugs if you have room in your life for some extra
snuggles!

Ramona is a striking, calico CoonieX, approx. 8 months old.
A poster kitty cat with long gorgeous coat and big beautiful
eyes. Very laid back and kind, well-mannered. Likes her catnip
mouse and enjoys hiding it under her blanket just to hunt for it.
Looking for a soft fluffy bed where she can pose for her calender
shot.

TC (white longhair CoonieX) and Sweet Pea (tortoiseshell) are
gorgeous 10 month old kitties. They are still kittens and are very
active. Both are sweet. They need a home where they can live
together.

There is an absolutely phenomenal Turkish Van with blue eyes
at the PetSmart in Bethesda. She is mostly white with a calico
tail and swashes of orange tabby strategically marked. A real
looker! She has been there for several weeks and for some
reason she has been overlooked. When I was there today she
was making mashed potatoes on her pink fleece bed--a real
sweetheart. Please send potential adopters to her rescue! She
is NOT depressed--is in good spirits--I just thought she could
use a little advertising so someone might take notice of her
and she could find her way into a loving home!!
