CRIMES IN THE ‘HOOD
From: EllenFSc@aol.com
A friend of mine told me about a recent burglary at her
home in the 3800 block of Van Ness. She was sitting at
her dining room table at 9:15 in the evening. She heard
a disturbance at her back door. She went to the unlocked
door and saw a man standing in her kitchen. He took a
knife from her drainboard, threatened her and told her to
give him all of her money. She did as directed and then
told him to go away! When he left she broke down and
screamed hysterically and then called the police. The police
responded within 5 minutes. She told me that she had never
been so scared in her life. I am passing on this story because it
could happen to any of us. LOCK YOUR DOORS AT ALL
TIMES. Be diligent about locking your doors even if you are
working in your garden and are near the house. My friend had
not been in the habit of locking her back door until the evening.
Believe me, she will lock her doors at all times after this terrible
experience.
Sincerely, Ellen Schou

JANNEY SCHOOL ANNUAL AUCTION
From: Palmer, Jill (Law) <jill.palmer@ngc.com>

Janney Elementary School, located at 4130 Albemarle Street, NW, is
Tenleytown's local DC Public school. On March 18th, Janney will hold
its annual Auction. Raffle tickets are sold in conjunction with the
Auction. Tickets are on sale now through March 18. The winners will be
selected during the evening of March 18. You need not be present to
win. Like the Auction, the raffle is an important Janney fundraiser.

The 1st place prize will be $10,000 and the 2nd place prize will be
$1000. There will also be 6 - $500 prices. So, several chances to
win!! The price per ticket is $100, made payable to the Janney PTA.
All ticket sale proceeds go directly to the Janney PTA. The Janney PTA
is an important part of what keeps Janney a great school for our
neighborhood children. As someone once said: "The most valuable room in
your home is your nearest classroom."

We hope you will consider supporting the Janney PTA through this
important fundraising event. If you are interested in buying a raffle ticket,
please contact Jill Palmer at palmerdoherty@comcast.net. We appreciate
your support!

DEPT. OF CONSUMER AND REGULATORY AFFAIRS
From: azepo@tenleytown@yahoogroups.com

Dr. Patrick Canavan, the recently appointed director of the DC
Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA), will
be the speaker at the general meeting of the Chevy Chase Citizens
Association on Tuesday, February 21 at 7:30 PM at the Chevy
Chase Community Center, Connecticut Avenue and McKinley Street,
NW.

DCRA has a long-standing reputation as one of DC government's
most difficult agencies for residents to decipher. Here is an opportunity
to learn about how Dr. Canavan is trying to turn the agency around
through the establishment of a Homeowners Center. You will also get
answers to questions about permits, additions, "McMansions",
inspections, enforcement, and more. Neil Stanley, deputy director for
licensing and permitting and Bill Crews, zoning administrator,
have also been invited to attend.
Don't miss this informative session!

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

**** From: Marla Mitnick <marla.mitnick@verizon.net>
I would like to highly recommend Josephina Lorenzo for
childcare or eldercare. She has been a companion and aid
to my elderly, disabled mother for two years and she is wonderfully
compassionate , kind and devoted. She has also worked in a
pre-school and has a certificate in child development. As my
mother’s constant companion, she drove, helped with shopping,
ran errands, did the laundry, light cooking, oversaw medications
and did whatever it took to keep my mother safe and satisfied
(and it took a lot). She speaks English well and is legal. She can
be reached at 301-466-4362. I will gladly provide references if you
contact me by email at marla.mitnick@verizon.net.

REPORTING INTERNET CRIME
From: Melvin Blecher @ tenleytown@yahoogroups.com
I've just learned that www.ifccfbi.gov has been changed to
www.IC3fbi.gov. When you report internet crime to this task
force their sole role is to review it and then, if it warrants further
action, they refer the report to the appropriate law enforcement
agency for possible action.

IC3 is not very forthcoming about defining "internet crime."
Although their published official definition refers to "any illegal
activity", the only type of internet crime they consider in the
definition is fraud involving money. However, elsewhere on their
website they refer to "spoofing" which IC3 refers to as "dissemination
of email which is forged to appear as though it was sent by
someone other than the actual sender.

SAFETY TIPS – BETTER SAFE THEN SORRY
From: edw3qc@comcast.net

1 . Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point
on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

2. Learned this from a tourist guide in New Orleans. If a robber
asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM .
Toss it away from you....chances are that he is more interested in
your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the
wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back
tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like
crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has
saved lives.

4. Some people have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping,
eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a
list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and
this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side,
put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU
GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

a. If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE
OFF, repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and
speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you.
If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon
as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find
your body in a remote location.

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or
parking garage:
A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger
side floor, and in the back seat.
B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the
passenger door. Many serial killers attack their victims by pulling
them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into
their cars.
C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle,
and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat
nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or
work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.
D.) Don’t pull into a parking space next to a van.

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY.
(And better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells
are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This
is especially true at NIGHT!)

7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control,
ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target)
4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital
organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!

8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP.
It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a
good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the
sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a
limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle,
which is when he abducted his next victim.
