CRIMES IN THE HOOD

DEATH ON GRAMERCY STREET
By now you have no doubt heard about the robbery that ended
in the tragic death of a neighbor. This was extremely unusual in
this very safe area. Most robberies occur around the busier streets
such as Wisconsin and Connecticut. Even there, it is very rare
that a victim is ever physically hurt. However, this reminds us
that there are no guarantees. A number of neighbors have urged
us all to call the Mayor's Hot Line at 727-1000 to report any street
or alley lights that are burned out, and also to keep front and back
porch lights on over night. Illumination discourages burglars,
robbers and other bad guys.
Also, please don't let this incident spook you. The more of us
who are out on the streets, the safer we will all be. KS

RE: PHONY LAWYER SCAMMER

**** From: Don Oakley <vze3bbrm@verizon.net>
This sounds like the same well-spoken person whom I encountered
on the Tenley metro platform last week, and then I remembered a
spate of similar reports from past years. She was well dressed and
started a conversation about an interest in where to have breakfast in
the neighborhood. She may have been working with a younger
person - no need to bother you with details. It was highly suspicious
for several reasons. May be the same person, and I suspect that the
police have heard about her. 'Suggest that you report.

**** From: Joanne Capper <jocapper@att.net>
In response to the warning about the "pretty lady" scammer, I had
exactly the same thing happen to me a few years ago, but the young
woman was white.

**** From KS Its not a bad idea to let the police know that
she's around. Perhaps they can discourage her. But it is not against
the law to lie to someone and ask them for money. If you give it
willingly, she has not broken a law.

MEETING ON BUS SHELTERS ON JANUARY 11
From: anc3b@yahoo.com
On Wednesday, January 11 at 7:00 p.m., the District Department
of Transportation (DDOT) has scheduled a meeting to obtain
community input on the implementation of the ClearChannel Adshel
bus shelter agreement signed by Mayor Anthony Williams. The
meeting will be held in the Great Hall at St. Columba's Church at

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

RE: Winston's Chimneys, we have been using their services
for the chimney of our wood-burning stove since about 1986.
They are wonderful, professional, very responsive, easy to
reach and reasonable in price. I also now personally know the
owner. Dave Benway is an area ambassador for our business
group (Business Network International), as well as on the
Rockville Chamber of Commerce. He's a straight-up and
honest person and not only does he own Winston's Chimneys
....he is a Chaplain as well!

So it's the new year, and there's that list of resolutions again!
How about working with a partner to support you in achieving what you
want in 2006? FH/Tenley resident Jillaine Smith offers low-cost
coaching that transforms goals into results. Give her a call at

Tall, four drawer (letter size, not legal size) beige steel filing
cabinet FREE if you pick it up (2 blocks from Tenley metro). It is in
excellent shape. Does not have a lock, but drawers open only by
pressing a latch by each drawer handle (prevents them from just rolling
open).

SEWING MACHINE REPAIR
Does anyone have knowledge of sewing machines to help me determine if my
new Kenmore is a lemon or can be made to stop groaning in agony when I
press the foot pedal...or have a recommendation for a reasonable repair shop?

JMR Home Improvements 301-252-2078 or 240-832-4830. Two terrific
brothers have just established a home improvement business for indoor
remodeling (bathrooms, kitchens, carpentry, etc.), small additions,
and outdoor landscaping needs. I have worked with both over several
years while they have been employed at the Cathedral and working part
time as independent contractors. If you have a plan, they will help you
make it happen. You could not find harder working, more trustworthy
or genuinely decent men than Miguel and Manuel.

**** From: Aijacelbl@aol.comProfessional translator, Maria Lucia
Oliveira, a friend of mine for over 30 years and who lives in Brasilia, Brazil,
would like to take a break from her city and revisit the Washington, D.C. area,
preferably Tenleytown, in the next year or so. She would like to stay here
for about one to three months and wonders whether there is anyone who
might want a house-sitter, plant- waterer, pet-sitter for their home? The
timing is very flexible. She is very reliable. Anyone who might be interested,
please get in touch with her by e-mail at sunlight@solar.com.br

Greyhound Alert!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another greyhound track is closing.
That means many of these gentle dogs will need homes.
Greyhounds are obedient, clean, smart, sweet and joyful dogs.
And they do not need to run for exercise!!!!
Or as the two around here, Berry Hill and Fourwheels, like to say:
"What part of retired didn't you understand?"
Greyhounds need no more exercise than any other dog.
So, if you know anyone who might be interested in adopting one,
please forward this email. I am available to answer any questions
and serve as a permanent resource in every way.
Please consider taking in a greyhound.
Greyhounds have nowhere else to go.

LOOKING FOR BOOKS ON TAPE
From: Bkravetz@aol.com
I am looking for "gently used" books on tape or CD for an
organization called "Live to Run Again" -- it was formed in the
memory of a woman who fell asleep while driving in her car to a dog
agility trial.

The idea is to set up a free tape exchange at agility trials. You
take what you want, leave what you have and return them to the next
trial where there is an LRA table set up. The purpose is to keep
drivers awake on the long drive to and from events -- and it works.
The group's web site is: "www.livetorunagain.org"

I am collecting tapes and CDs for upcoming agility trials in the
Washington area in January. The tapes should be in a box (or
otherwise wrapped together and identified). Any subject matter is
accepted -- fiction, non-fiction, thrillers, romance novels...even
Harry Potter (ESPECIALLY Harry Potter)!

If you have tapes or CDs you would like to contribute, please contact
me to arrange pick-up or drop off.
Thanks.

JANUARY OPENINGS AT AMAZING LIFE GAMES
FOR 21/2 TO 5 YEAR OLDS!
**** From: Pippa Trench <ptrench@mac.com>

I am a second year parent of a three year-old at Amazing Life
Games, a cooperative preschool thats been around for over
30 years. This fall, ALG moved from Adams Morgan to a
larger space on 16th and Varnum Streets and
we now have room for more children starting in January.

ALG is an incredibly loving and stimulating environment with a
dynamic and caring staff who have been with the school from ten
to thirty years. My son spends his days with a diverse group of
children from all over the world. His days at ALG include lots of
building and art projects, outdoor activities, singing and storytelling
along with special activities like planting bulbs, going to art museums,
yoga and tumbling class, and dramatic play with the former director
of the Living Stage Theater Company.

I am the parent volunteer admissions coordinator Please contact
me if you are interested in learning more about out school and check
out our website, Amazinglifegames.org. If you and your child want to
