PROBLEM WITH AOL
When I sent out the following special COMMUNIT-E
regarding not giving out your Social Security Number, all
the AOL addresses were kicked back. Therefore I am
running it again for those who did not receive it:
WARNING RE: DECEMBER 6 COMMUNIT-E
From: David (Concerned AU Park Neighbor)
Per "UNSOLICITED CREDIT CARD AND INSURANCE
OFFERS" the web site referenced requests your social security
number and date of birth. I would strongly advise against sending
this info over the WEB to this site due to danger of Identity Theft.
-------
From: KS -- I agree with David and suggest you give only your
name and address -- the only required information. I would add
that while this site may be fine, it’s never a good idea to give out
a Social Security Number unless you absolutely have to.
WARNING ABOUT WOOD SELLER IN THE ‘HOOD
– AND REQUEST FOR TAG NUMBER
From: Peter G Shields <pgs2@georgetown.edu>
I have had an unfortunate experience with a guy who travels the
neighborhood selling wood. I have purchased from him many times
in last few years, and he has done jobs around the house like tree
removal and walkways. This time, I contracted with him to do some
work and he disappeared. His contact info does not work. He
cashed
my check, though (500 bucks after the payment for the wood)! His
name
is Roy Seal. He drives a large pickup with Virginia tags. Many
times
he comes with his boys and wife. If you see this guy -- 1) beware
and
2) if you can let me know his car tag number, that would be great.
“PRETTY LADY” SCAMMER STILL ACTIVE
From: rsanse@verizon.net
A friend and I were scammed last night in the Chevy Chase
Circle area on Connecticut Avenue by a woman saying she
was a lawyer named Doris White who worked at Covington and
Burling and had locked her keys and purse in her BMW and
needed money to get home via taxi ($30 each way) to Aspin Hill
to get her spare keys - etc. etc. She was a well spoken, well dressed
very light skinned African American, slender, about 5'3", suitably
distraught, and unfortunately we fell for it, and even gave her our
business cards so she could return the money to us. We learned
today that there is a Doris White at Covington and Burling, but not
the same woman. This is a new kind of identity theft. Apparently
this same scammer is working the MD and VA suburbs as well.
Beware.

>From KS – I see her from time to time near the Tenleytown Metro
on Wisconsin Avenue.
ASSAULT AND ROBBERY IN GLOVER PARK AREA
From: anc3b@yahoo.com
Our Cleaning lady was assaulted and robbed this afternoon
[Dec. 17] at aprox 2:30 PM as she was getting into her car
which was parked at 39th Street and W Street.
The assailant is described as a black male, medium complexion,
40 to 45 years old, 5' 7" tall, 170 lbs. She had set two shopping
bags down on the sidewalk to open the car door when the suspect
approached her and sprayed a MACE substance in her eyes and
on her face, blinding her while he grabbed the shopping bags
and fled south on 39th Street towards the woods.
It appears that this is not the only attack in Glover Park that follows
the same pattern - a similar incident took place at 39th and Benton
in the past 10 days. In addition, a neighbor was approached by
someone as she was exiting the Dog Park trail at 38th and W Street
- but was able to avoid the attack.
PLEASE look around as you are walking in the neighborhood
and CALL THE POLICE if anything or anyone looks out of place.

I'm looking for a glazier who can replace ordinary window panes in
my basement. The frames are metal. Blaine gave me an estimate

about $80 per pane and refused (at first) to tell me the dimensions of
the glass to be replaced.

PROTEST AGAINST TORTURE
Here is an idea whose time has really come. Help us tell the
Administration that it is not OK to condone, use, promote or
even wink or nod at torture. It is not OK with us. We are an
ethically-based group, not political. We want to tell the world
that torture is purely wrong. Tell your friends! Join us for a silent
vigil on Wednesday, December 21 and 28, from 5 - 7 pm across

HELP FOR DC TEACHERS AND STUDENTS
From: From: Melinda Halpert@ tenleytown@yahoogroups.com
A Field Trip Makes a Perfect Holiday Gift, as do new books, art
supplies, musical instruments and more.
Dear Neighbors --
I am a huge fan of Means For Dreams, a local nonprofit
that helps DC public school classrooms get much needed
resources like new books, sports equipment,
calculators, art supplies, field trips and so much
more. As you think about year-end charitable
donations, I encourage you to visit
www.meansfordreams.org. You will
be amazed by how
simple it is to make a huge difference to a teacher
and a classroom in our city.
At www.meansfordreams.org., you can
review ideas
submitted by teachers for materials and services they
would like to make available to their students. You
can sort the requests by subject, grade, and dollar
range and you can choose to fund all or part of a
given project that appeals to you. Means For Dreams
staff verifies every proposal and acquires the
materials or services for the teacher. Each donor
receives a detailed receipt of their contribution, but
even more powerful and poignant, each donor receives
thank you letters and photos from the teacher and
students themselves.
I guarantee this will be one of the most wonderful
gifts you could make.
Thank you,
Melinda Halpert
