On Thursday, December 1, at 7:30 pm, local resident Alice
Stewart will discuss and sign her new book, "The Palisades of
Washington, DC", about the historical development of the Palisades
area, at the Palisades Branch of the DC Public Library, 4901 V

And Kimla Mcdonald:
Do It At Deal!
You know you're going to do it-why not do it at Deal? Purchase your
holiday trees, wreaths and garlands during the 3rd annual Deal
Holiday Tree Sale, coming up Saturday, December 3, and Sunday,
December 4. You'll not only be creating a festive atmosphere, you'll
also be supporting the PTA. In the past two years, the tree sale has
raised over $10,000 for the school.
And if you're thinking you'll wait to buy a tree later because it
will be fresher-here's a tip: tree growers all cut their trees at
the same time, then ship in batches. Trees purchased in early
December can be kept outside in the shade for 2-3 weeks and will
remain very fresh.
See you at the tree sale!

SITUATIONS IN THE ‘HOOD
**** From: Dorcas Adkins <dorcas@waba.org>
I'd like to report that in our alley between 38th and 39th,
Albemarle and Alton Place, there has been a situation
developing where young adult males, presumably gone
AWOL from Wilson High, have been congregating
during the day and up to no good. In Sept they merely
gathered and talked, making it feel overly nosy to hustle
them off. Then they began being more brash, calling
one of us "sweetie" and possibly smoking a joint - we
couldn't really see. Then I surprised a group of four when
I entered the alley suddenly on my bike - one was hastily
pocketing something and stepping away from a garage
door where new grafiti told the story. Another garage has
been decorated since then. The mail delivery woman here
has told me that unlocked garages have been entered recently
and things have been taken. I have called 311 on them several
times and the police always seem willing and eager to follow
up. I don't know whether they have ever found them, since the
boys are usually on the move all the time. Obviously, this is the
sort of stuff that requires a concerted effort from many informed
adults. Let's keep them moving at least, and share information
here!

Last weekend several individuals, some of whom were Wilson
students, were assaulted and robbed in Fort Reno Park. These
attacks occurred during the evening. Be reminded that it is not
safe to visit the park at night--in fact it is closed after dark
unless there is a permitted event such as a concert. Safety in
Fort Reno after dark has been an issue for over 30 years and
everyone should be reminded of that fact.
OTHER STRANGE SITUATIONS
**** From: Nelson Jacobsen @ tenleytown@yahoogroups.com
On Monday nite Oct 31st I was loading up our car on 47
street for a early morning trip around 4:30 AM.
I noticed a sedan driving around. since he was going so slow
I thought it was the newspaper person. It wasn’t. The car then turned
around and went up Verplank. I really got a strange vibe from the
driver.
**** From: Jeff Behrens @ tenleytown@yahoogroups.com
This might have been nothing, but I was arriving home
at around 3:30 Sunday morning and saw a car that seems
to fit the description driving slowly down Brandywine,
and then turn onto 43rd Pl. I too thought it was a
paper deliverer at first, but the driver never
completely stopped/delivered anything. He/she seemed
to slow down in front of several houses, but again,
never stopped completely. I watched the car drive all
the way down 43rd Pl and take a left on Albemarle
before I lost sight. I didn’t catch the tag number, but it was
a light brown, late model Toyota Camry...
Again, could have been a coincidence, but when I saw
it I immediately thought of other, similar posts.

Walking to Connecticut Avenue down Albemarle Street
from Reno Road within the last hour, I saw a police
officer posting notices on car windshields warning
that there was a danger after a spate of automobile
break-ins recently. My block on Appleton Street had
three in one night a couple of weeks ago. Be alert.
MORE ON PARKING STICKER PROBLEM
**** From: Beverly Yett <turkbook@yahoo.com>
I read the query from Andrea Dean [ see below] with interest
because this is a continuing problem in our house. When I
suggested to the Police Department that each resident should
receive 2 guest passes so we can entertain without fear of our
guests getting tickets, he suggested taking this up with the Area
council. I am interested in doing this but I would like to know
how others feel about this before I proceed.
Beverly Yett
**** From KS — I’ll be the first to put my oar in, and I encourage
others to send in their opinions also.
I strongly believe we need a remedy to this problem.
One suggestion is that each household have one or two passes that can be
placed in the windshield of visiting cars. The pass could have the address
of the
household so that violations can be brought to that home’s attention, or
otherwise remedied. This would prevent someone from handing it over to
a friend to be used as a daily parking pass.
PREVIOUS QUERY FROM ANDREA DEAN:
We have frequent visits from family that exceed the two-hour
neighborhood parking limit. As a result, we've gotten several expensive
parking tickets. This morning we went to the Second District to see if
we could get visitor parking permits that would take care of ! the situation.
We were told we'd have to return to the station for a permit every time we
had a visitor, which can be twice weekly. Any advice?

COCKATEIL SITTING EXCHANGE
I have a wonderful lutino cockateil and am wondering if there is
anyone in the 'HOOD who would like to exchange cockateil sitting
services. I have been boarding him when I go away, but he loves to
fly and I hate the thought of his being locked up and unattended. He
is sweet and friendly and will come to you when you clap your hands.
The only problem, of course, is that he is not toilet trained. He cannot
stay in home where there are cats or dogs. If you're interested in
exchanging services, please contact me at sebsow@hotmail.com.
Please put Cockateil Sitting Exchange in your header so I won't mistake
it for junk mail.

WET BASEMENT RECOMMENDATION
I wanted to recommend AquaGuard for anyone looking for
a professional firm to assess a wet basement. Their representative
came to my house for a free and thorough assessment; identified
my problem; told me that the "fix" wouldn't require his services
(which start at $3,500), and made an excellent referral for someone
who could do the work at a much, much smaller price.

MORE CATS IN THE 'HOOD
From: Darnot@aol.com
All have been spay/neutered, are up-to-date on vaccinations,
and have been tested:
MAGGIE is a luscious rust colored tabby (female red tabbies
are rare in nature!). She is sweet, very low-key girl. Probably
would do best as a solo cat or in a home with another low-key
cat. She is 3 years old.
CARL is a black and white cow kitty who, like Maggie, is
very low-key. He is quite gentlemanly and is not the kind of cat
that is in your face or on your lap but happy to be nearby. He
would probably thrive in a home with another cat (like Maggie!)
who is low key and non-aggressive. Carl is around 2.
FAT BOY SLIM is a gorgeous Russian Blue who is the
sweetest fellow and absolutely had everyone at the shelter in l
ove with him. This five year old is overweight and needs to loose
a few! He sometimes has trouble grooming himself because he is
so big. Living in a cage is doing nothing to help the problem.
He would thrive in a loving home where he could finally be a
cat again and get some exercise!
JACK is a large framed black and white cow kitty who
is declawed. He is a show stopper! And very deserving of a l
oving home!
PHOENIX is a Turkish Van--all white save a small brown
tabby cap on her head! She gets along great with other cats and is
sweet natured. Declawed, adorable pink nose, around 4 years old!
