COMMUNIT-E
October 24, 2005
COMMUNIT-E will come out about every other week
(and sometimes every three weeks), rather than once a
week, as it did until fairly recently. If an item is time-sensitive,
please send it to me as early as possible to make sure it gets out.
You might also want to sign up for the Tenleytown Listserve at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tenleytown/.
This is run by Fred Vinson
and is also a valuable source of neighborhood information. Things can
get out quicker on Fred’s listserve than on COMMUNIT-E but
COMMUNIT-E has a larger mailing list so your message reaches
more people.
There’s no harm in getting both information services since they are
structured differently and serve different purposes. – KS

WAVE UNIT INCREASED TO COMBAT AUTO THEFT
The Washington Area Vehicle Enforcement unit is made up
of police officers from DC and the surrounding jurisdictions.
It has now been increased to 52 officers, with each participating
jurisdiction adding more people. There were four from DC and
six more have been added. In the four and a half years it’s been
in existence, this unit has located thousands of stolen autos,
as well as guns and drugs in stopped autos. They’ve made
thousands of arrests in that time. This is one of the real
police success stories in our area.

I have a question. I was there on the Janney playground when
the woman was shoved out of her car. I had no cell phone with
me; I was watching my kids. The woman appeared to know the
man. She also didn't cry out or ask for help. Under the
circumstances, what should I have done?
I understand she did file a police report.
Please advise so I can act accordingly in the future.
OTHER CRIMES IN THE ‘HOOD

3700 block of Veazey Street, NW
Car broken into, side window smashed - October 7/8
Car stolen - October 10/11
A stolen car found parked on the street - October 8/9
**** From: elisabeth legrain <legraincyr@hotmail.com>
Sadly our family experienced a break-in and entry on Friday am and
car theft. The burglar pried open a rear basement window, went
through basement bedroom and our office space, took a Dell laptop
computer, went upstairs to main part of the house, found my purse,
brought it downstairs, flipped it upside down, took cash from wallet
and house/car keys and fled with our 8 mo old 2005 gold metallic
Volvo SUV. I went into the kitchen around 7am and noticed the
motion detector light on in back of the house, heard voices and saw
a flashlight. I went on back deck and didn't see or hear anything. I
never imagined a burglary and went about making the children's
lunchboxes. It wasn't until closer to 7:45am that we realized the
car was missing, purse gone... The police were terrific in quickly
responding. They did not find finger prints. In fact, they left our
house to go to another burglary on 45th street. What is going on in
the hood! Our alarm system was not turned on but regardless the
basement windows were not part of the system. Tomorrow,
everything will be updated including basement. Our dog who
usually is a great protector was snoring! It was my son's 7th
birthday, one we won't forget anytime soon. We drove around
the city today hopelessly looking for our vehicle. It's really
unsettling that such incidents are going on in our neighborhood
- a first for us. Any tips are greatly appreciated.
----------------
Hello, Our stolen SUV was recovered by third district police last
night having been abandoned on Adams Mill Road near the zoo
when it ran out of gas. It had been on a joy ride....and is now sitting
at Martens waiting for damage estimates. Evidence was taken from
the car. The police woman who came to retrieve items today said I
should work with the ANC and/or call the mayor's hotline to request
more lighting at night in this part of the neighborhood. She mentioned
the gigantic oak trees in front of our block of homes prevent adequate
lighting and the other side of the street doesn't appear to have
lighting.
I appreciate your ideas. Thanks. Elisabeth
PLASTIC BAGS – MORE USES THAN WE REALIZE

All the supermarkets accept plastic bags for recycling - they have bins
in front of their stores to make it easy for those of us who are
environment-conscious.
**** From: Joe Pinder. They are all gone, to the first person
(of five) who called. Some nice lady whose husband runs a school
wanted them so they could pack lunches in them. And the Humane
Society and a Rescue league also wanted them. I had a huge amount,
like a packed-full leaf-bag full. One man’s junk . . . etc.

RE: DOG AND LEASH ISSUE
**** From: North, Percy <Percy.North@montgomerycollege.edu>
My replay to the guy with the dog off the leash is:
I have had TERRIBLE trouble with unleashed dogs.
Everyone with an unleashed dog screams at me that their
dog is VERY FRIENDLY as the dog bounds towards me and
my small but ferocious dog on a leash. Their ever so nice dog gets
pretty nasty when my ridiculously aggressive but small terrier attacks.
I have had to pull my little dog out of the maw of some pretty large
beasts. It really is not very amusing AND in EVERY case the
offending dog owner says: Gosh my dog has never done that before.
Right.
So it isn't completely unreasonable to have a leash law and LOTS of
people can't be bothered with it as I have found out.

SUBJECT: Fabulous Nanny!!!
It breaks my heart to have to let my daughter's nanny
go, but I have decided to become a stay at home mom.
My daughter is now 14 months and our nanny has been
with her full time since she was 3 months old.
If anyone needs a nanny or knows someone who needs one
starting in early December, please let me know. She
prefers a full-time position but is willing to
consider a three or two day a week position.
Our nanny is the best and any family would be lucky to
have her! If you need more information, please e-mail me and/or
I will give you my phone# for further discussion.
Thank you.

Caregiver/Nanny
In case you are interested or know about somebody that would be
interested in hiring someone they could trust to help take care of
their babies/kids and speak in Spanish to them, my cousin Juliana,
21 years old, needs to learn English in order to obtain her college
degree as a Physical Therapist in Bogota, Colombia. She is looking
to live/work for a family that wants help with their children so she
can study English at night and during weekends (flexible schedule).
She is interested in doing this for a period of 5 to 12 months. Juliana
could start as soon as December 2005/January 2006 or in mid-June 2006.
She currently holds a general visa to come to the US, but depending
on final plans and/or her school requirements, she may also need to
apply for a student visa.
I should say that I don’t have first hand knowledge about her
experience with babies or children, but knowing her personality (very
calm, creative, resourceful and happy person), her family values and
her training as a physical therapist, I would expect for her to be very
dependable, hardworking gentle and responsible. She also has had
experience with her baby cousins in Bogota.
If you are interested, I am happy to provide you with more details.
You can email me at vivilopez78@yahoo.com or call
at 202-256-3432.
Please pass this around to friends and families that could be
interested.

Safe Dumping
By J.J. McCoy
Thursday, October 13, 2005; Page H03
Until now, the District's Department of Public Works set aside
two days, one each in the spring and the fall, for residents to
dispose of hazardous waste -- such as old paint, dinosaur
computers, half-used pesticides, expired medicine and dead
batteries -- at the Carter Barron Amphitheatre in Northwest.
This fall for the first time, they are offering a second day and
site in Northeast.
Surrounding communities in Maryland and Virginia have
permanent sites open year-round and some offer special
collection days, too. Consult your local jurisdiction's authorities
for more details, including what materials will be accepted.
District collection points are open between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
on Oct. 22 in the Carter Barron Amphitheatre parking lot
(16th and Kennedy streets NW) and Nov. 12 at the Benning
Road Transfer Station (3200 Benning Rd. NE). For information,

Jefferson Middle School, 125 S. Old Glebe Rd. Its permanent
site is open Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and by appointment

CATS IN THE ‘HOOD
From: darnot@aol.com
Looking for love! These cats were all pulled from a shelter on the day
they were schedule to be euthanized. Please help them find their way to
loving homes! They are all so deserving. All have been spay/neutered,
are up-to-date on vaccinations, and have been tested. Contact
darnot@aol.com
FAT BOY SLIM is a gorgeous Russian Blue who is the sweetest fellow and
absolutely had everyone at the shelter in love with him. This five year
old is overweight (how could anyone let their cat go like this?) and
needs to loose a few! He sometimes has trouble grooming himself because
he is so big. Living in a cage is doing nothing to help the problem. He
would thrive in a loving home where he could finally be a cat again and
get some exercise! Can you help this special needs boy?
JACK is a big black and white cow kitty. Unlike Fat Boy Slim who is
overweight, Jack is sleek with a large framed physique. He came to the
shelter with his two sisters who were both adopted. I just cannot
fathom how this handsome guy could be overlooked? He is such a looker!
Declawed. Very deserving of a loving home!
PHOENIX is a Turkish Van--all white save a small brown tabby cap on her
head! She gets along great with other cats and is sweet natured.
Declawed, adorable pink nose, around 4 years old!
LARA is a mink stole of a cat. Jet black who turns herself inside out,
she is so affectionate! Petite, around a year old, she is very people
oriented and intelligent. A great girl!
