BEWARE!
I was very unhappy to receive junk e-mail addressed as follows:

Subject: AWARD WINNING NOTIFICATION...........................
Date: Sat, 3 Sep 2005 03:56:18 -0400 (EDT)
From: Ksmith1804@starpower.net <goldenpoint2@702mail.co.za>
Reply-To: Ksmith1804@starpower.net <goldenpoint2@702mail.co.za>

The sender line in my inbox showed only my e-mail address, not that of the
actual sender. If you had received it, you would have thought it was coming
from me until you opened it and took a good look at the e-mail address.

Another scam to be aware of is one that involves counterfeit postal
money orders. Some were sent with our name and address, as the sender,
to someone in Indiana. The receiver was honest and sent them back to us
with a note. We turned them over to a US Postal inspector. This is a
scam making the rounds. – KS

KUDOS AND THANKS TO:
Kersti & Denis Colombant for their hard work to help keep Wisconsin
Avenue beautiful. I saw Kersti working this morning in front of Babe’s.
She had cleaned up the tree boxes from Chesapeake to Brandywine and
was looking pretty hot and tired by the time I saw her. We should be
very grateful for our neighbors who volunteer many labor intensive hours
to make this a more pleasant neighborhood for the rest of us. – KS

HAZARDOUS WASTE AND ELECTRONICS
RECYCLING, OCTOBER 15
From: anc3b@yahoo.com and Mary Myers, mary.myers@dc.gov
The District Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold its
biannual household hazardous waste and electronics recycling
drop-off event on Saturday, October 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in
the Carter Barron Amphitheater parking lot at 16th and Kennedy
Streets, NW. These services are free and open to all District
residents. Household hazards include old cleaning and gardening
chemicals, pesticides and poisons, acids, varnish, oil-based paints,
solvents, aerosols, wood preservatives, spent batteries of all kinds,
roofing tar, chemistry sets, automotive fluids, even asbestos floor tiles.

DPW will also have an electronics recycling station to receive
end-of-life televisions, office and audio equipment, computers,
computer parts and accessories. All computer monitors and TV
screens must be intact, not cracked, punctured or shattered.
During processing, the electronics are broken down into component
parts, precious as well as toxic metals are extracted, and then the
various materials are recycled or disposed of safely. Residents
who have old or unneeded recycling bins may also bring those to the
event. The old bins will eventually be recycled themselves. For
more information on household hazardous waste, visit the DPW
web site at http://www.dpw.dc.gov/info/house_haz_waste.shtml.

GETTING RID OF MICE
I can recommend Ward Pest Control, 703-532-3506, for removing mice from
your home. They set out traps and carefully inspect the inside and outside
of your home to find out where the mice are getting in, and then seal those
spaces. They will even come back to check the traps and remove the dead
mice. We have also used the company for years for termite inspections, and
their personnel are very responsible.

We also found it useful to buy the paint you want first then get the
painter to do the painting as it is most often the high quality
material (paint) that you want. You then can negotiate the price of
labor.

LEAD AND WATER METERS
From: Chris Turner at tenleytown@yahoogroups.com
Recently when on the phone with an upper level employee of the Water and
Sewer Authority I brought up the subject of Why Lead Free Water Meters
had not
been installed throughout the city in 2002 and 2003. The employee told
me that
the meters were lead free. I told her that I remembered reading a story
that
they had lead in them and she said she had never heard about that. I did
a quick
google search while on the phone with her and found the below article on
the
WTOP News website. I read it to her and she said she would look into it
and get
back in touch with me. That was over a month ago and I have not heard back
from her. The article (which is below) is on the WTOP Website.

D.C. Water Meters Studied For Lead
Updated: Thursday, Mar. 31, 2005 - 6:35 AM
WASHINGTON-- Thousands of new water meters in the
District are being closely examined as officials continue to investigate
what
might be responsible for elevated lead levels in the city's drinking water.
The D.C. Water and Sewer Authority spent about $36 million in 2002 and
2003 to
replace the city's meters in an effort to get more-accuratereadings on
water
usage and improve customer billing. But those new meters are made of
materials
that contain five to seven percent lead. Several independent analysts
say that
while the new meters are considered lead free under federal standards, they
are likely leaching some lead into the city's drinking water. The analysts
agree that D.C.'s lead service lines pose the biggest threat to the
city's water
supply. Still, they say WASA should adopt new policies to make sure they
are
installing only lead-free meters.(Copyright 2004 by The Associated

Here is an odd example of neighborhood vandalism that everybody should
be aware of. Sometime between August 23 and 25 (though I bevieve it was
the night of the 24) somebody dug up an oak leaf hydrangia from our front
yard on 41st St. The plant was dug up and the mulch smoothed over the spot
where it had been standing. It was not cut at all. When I asked the
local PD
if there were reports of other such incidents in the neighborhood, the
officer
on duty said he had not heard of such but offered to put our house on watch.
Has anybody else experienced such vandalism?

ADVICE ON THREE KIDS DOING CAR REPAIRS
From: Neighbor
I wanted to alert my neighbors to three kids going around in a silver
Mercedes SUV soliciting auto body repair work for cash. I advise
you do NOT use their services and instead go to a legal, licensed
auto body repair shop. The kids give you a low ball estimate, or none
at all before they begin work on your car, and then later jack up the
price using psychological high pressure tactics. It is excruciating,
as you can't get rid of them once they start work. They insist on being
paid in cash, even if they have to follow you to the ATM. Frankly, the
work was of reasonable quality, but NOTHING is worth the agony of
listening to them pine for a ridiculously large tip or drone on about how
much this would have cost in a body shop. For the amount of time spent,
the price is ridiculously high.

ANIMALS IN THE ‘HOOD
**** From: Darnot@aol.com

Lara, a beautiful black mink stole of a kitty needs a home.
She was rescued from a high kill shelter on the day she was
to be euthanized. We could not let such a tragedy occur! Lara
is just over a year, spayed, up-to-date on her shots. She is a very
personable young lady forever waiting for her Dr Zhivago! Please
email cawad@cox.net if you can provide this wonderful feline a
forever home.

Gorgeous George is a 10+ silver tabby who was dumped
near a retired cat rescuer in the country. A neighbor found
him debilitated and dehydrated! We imagine that his owner
died and the family just unloaded him nearby, hoping he'd
find the rescuer (he did not). This personable, highly intelligent
boy has been thoroughly checked out by a vet and is in tip top
shape (which is probably how he survived so long outside on his
own). He is like a dog and follows you around, very affectionate
and personable. Speaking of dogs, he loves dogs, big dogs, little
dogs--no fear! Please consider providing this marvelous cat a place
to hang his leash (not that we want him to ever go outside again)!

Two twelve year old cats, whose owner died, were transported
to a shelter in Virginia even though the owner had left specific
instructions for their care! Rescue got involved and these two
traumatized cats are now looking for a safe loving home--even
a foster situation where all their medical care will be covered
by the rescue. These two girls cannot be separated. One is a
beautiful Himalayan and her "sister" is an orange tabby with
a pushed-in nose, so may have some Persian in her. Please
consider providing a loving home--they are in excellent health
and have many good years left!

RALLY AT THE CAPITOL – DEMOCRACY FOR DC
From: Joanne Levine <joannelevine@earthlink.net>

Join the ACLU of the National Capital Area and others for a Democracy for
DC rally on Thursday, September 15, 2005, from 5:30 to 8:30 PM on the West
Lawn of the U.S. Capitol to protest congressional interference in local
issues and DC's denial of voting representation in Congress.

Congress has, over the years, imposed its will on DC by attaching riders to
the DC Appropriations Bill, which, in effect, limits the DC government from
determining how its own budget should be allocated. Once again through the
appropriations process, Congress is limiting the DC budget and stripping DC
residents of their right to spend their local tax dollars their own way,
this time with regard to gun safety laws.

Such action in the past has resulted in limitations on HIV/AIDS prevention
measures, domestic partnership policies and reproductive rights, to name a
few. To make things worse, this type of interference goes on while
Americans living in the 'capital of the free world' do not even have
representation in Congress.

The ACLU is taking the lead in protesting this national disgrace. The
schedule of events for the evening of Thursday, September 15, 2005, is as
follows:

5:30 PM - Music and entertainment begins
7:30 PM - Candlelight march around the Capitol Building begins
For more information on the rally, visit the ACLU-NCA Web site or contact
Beverly Miller at the ACLU-NCA by e-mail at beverly@aclu-nca.org.
