TURTLE PARK MAY FAIR
Mark your calendars and think sunny weather! The 8th Annual
May Fair to benefit Friendship "Turtle" Park will be held Saturday,
May 14 from 10AM to 3PM.

May Fair is our Spring festival with pony rides, moon bounces,
games, crafts, concessions and a silent auction. This is a wonderful
community event that attracts more than 1,500 neighbors each year.
The money raised goes to help improve and maintain the park our
children love so much.

Volunteers are still needed to make the day a success. We need people
to help out in numerous areas such as ticket taking, concessions, rides,
posting event flyers, set-up and clean-up. If you can donate a couple
hours of your time on this special day, please contact
Karen Rosenthal at volunteer@turtlepark.org or at 202-686-6606.

And, we can't forget our sponsors. Their generosity each year is greatly
appreciated. This year's sponsors so far include: Susan Jaquet of
WC & AN Miller Realtors; WTOP; RCN/ Starpower; North West Sport
& Health; Martens; Pepco; Drink More Water, Honest Tea, Segway;
SuperFresh, Starbucks and Metropolitan Moving & Storage. If you or
your company are interested in becoming a May Fair Sponsor, please
contact Michelle Dolge at
mdolge@aol.com.
We look forward to seeing you and your family at May Fair on May 14!

RESPONSES TO SHARI PFLEEGER’S EXPERIENCES

**** From: Jim Holway <clutch3906@starpower.net>
Thanks for sending Ms. Pfleeger's story. I have passed it to my
wife. Excellent reporting.

**** From: Bkravetz@aol.com
In response to Shari Lawrence Pfleeger's account of her attack and sftermath :
All I can say is "WOW." Yes, the heroes include the neighbors, strangers
and assorted others who helped her through this horrific experience, but Shari
is, indeed, the hero, for fighting back, and following through. I was extremely
moved by her account. Thank you, Shari, for sharing your experience and
your thoughts.

IN RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS IN TENLEYTOWN LISTSERVE
RELATING TO POLICE ACCIDENT REPORTS
From: onejollybird <onejollybird@yahoo.com>
The police only have to take a report if there is personal injury.
I had to insist that the cop make a report the last time I was broad-
sided and I had a Barwood Cab total my legally parked car in the
middle of the night and the only reason I got a report was because
the driver left the scene.

I received the DC Council Legislative Calendar for the week starting
May 2nd. The following bill is to be heard later in May.

Bill 16-252, "Real Property Protection from Motor Vehicles Amendment
Act of 2005." To amend D.C. Official Code 31-2402 and 31-2408.01 to
provide protection to property owners who experience property damage
due to the operation of motor vehicles in the District and to
require the Metropolitan Police Department to provide property
owners with copies of police reports documenting damage to real
property from the operation of motor vehicles. Councilmember Gray,
to the Committee on Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, with comments
from the Committees on the Judiciary and Public Works and the
Environment.

From this it appears that there currently is no law stating that a
property damage report be taken.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

**** From: Katharine Landfield <klandfield@earthlink.net>
Homeless family with 4 (soon to be 5) children is looking for a
temporary (probably one month, possibly less, possibly more) apartment
or basement to stay in. Children, one of whom is my son's classmate,
are currently divided up with helpful families, but the kids are really
missing their folks (and vice versa). If you know of a free or cheap
place (or a church or other community program that we could contact),
preferably with public transport close by, please call me as soon as
possible. My phone is 202-363-3782. Thank you so much.

the recommended Ackokeek but found its prices too high.

Mold Problem
I live in a 1932 Colonial house in AU Park. On my third floor I have a
large patch of mold around the access door to the attic and in a closet.
The mold is black, but it was a lighter color earlier. After I moved into
the house, on the advice of the home inspector I had insulation blown
into the walls and had insulation put into the attic. I also replaced the
1932 windows with new windows. The mold began to appear sometime
after I had this work done. I had a second home inspector come out and
he says there are no leaks in the roof or the walls of the house. I need
advice about what to do about the moldy patches on the ceiling and in
the closet. I also need a reference to someone who can fix this problem
for me. Any help I can get would be appreciated.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DC TREE INVENTORY

**** From: anjinsan@geotrees.com
Help re-green the District by volunteering for Casey Trees summer tree
inventory program. Volunteer training consists of 5 hours in the classroom
and one Saturday morning in the field. Four training sessions are offered,
two in late May and two in early June.

The training is part of the Casey Trees Citizen Forester program. Citizen
Foresters are local volunteers who serve the DC community by helping to
restore, enhance, and protect our city's tree canopy. This summer's
inventory will have two parts. The first part of the summer the District's
American elm street trees will be inspected for Dutch elm disease. The
trees on the grounds of 50 public schools will be inventoried using state
of the art GIS techniques for the second inventory.

Participants will be taught the skills needed to maintain the ongoing
inventory of city trees and can participate in one or both of the
inventories during the summer.

For more information on the Citizen Forester Program or to register for an
upcoming training, please visit www.caseytrees.org or contact Heather
Langford at 202.833.4010, ext. 103 or hlangford@caseytrees.org.

OBAMA CAMPAIGN VETERAN TO LEAD DC
DEMOCRACY FUND
From: Gina Trippi, DC Democracy Fund
<dcdemocracyfund@democracyinaction.org>
Dear Friend,
As a supporter of DC Democracy Fund, I know you share my
commitment to electing federal candidates who support
Congressional voting rights for the District of Columbia.
This past year, I was proud to serve as Regional Director for the
campaign staff that elected U.S. Senator Barack Obama. Senator
Obama, a strong proponent of DC voting rights, was just one of the
many great candidates that DC Democracy Fund has supported with
the help of your contributions.

After returning to Washington eager to fight for change, I was
proud to accept a position as the new Executive Director of DC
Democracy Fund. I will be working with the Fund's co-founder
Sean Tenner, who served with me on the Obama campaign.

I'm sure you know that there will be many battles to fight in this
Congress. In addition to fighting for legislation granting us the
right to vote, we must fight against proposals which will harm our city.

Last year, DC Democracy Fund worked against a proposal by
Congressman Mark Souder to overturn all of DC's gun laws
against our will. We sent phone calls into Souder's district right
before election day letting voters know how dangerous his proposal
was. Fortunately, the bill did not become law. Now we are preparing
to fight back against other Congressional proposals which would impose
a right-wing agenda on our city.

Soon you will receive an invitation to our first DC Democracy Fund
event of 2005. In the meantime, I hope you will call or e-mail me if
you would like to help by sharing ideas or hosting a fundraiser.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
Best wishes,
S. Gina Trippi
Executive Director
DC Democracy Fund
