COMMUNIT-E

HAPPY EASTER, EVERYONE.
PROBLEM WITH STARPOWER
Did you get the last two issues of COMMUNIT-E?
They were sent March 3 and March 14.
If not, you can get them by going to the following
web site:
http://www.anc3f.org/communit-e05.html
Starpower has a new policy that its users cannot send
more than 400 e-mails in a one-hour time frame. Since
COMMUNIT-E has more than 1200 recipients, it takes
several hours to mail it to the entire list. I fear that some
addresses have been temporarily omitted in the sending.
This policy is unfortunate in that I can no longer send
out police lookouts and other emergency notices instantly.
I will write to Starpower to ask for a dispensation on the
grounds of community safety. If you would also like to give
them a nudge, and let them know that you want this newsletter
and that it is not spam, the address is:
Starpower - Customer Advocacy Group
105 Carnegie Center
Princeton
New Jersey 08540
Unfortunately, it has to go snail mail. The so-called customer
advocacy group doesn’t want to make it too easy for its
customers. When I called them I had to wait for some time until
a supervisor could come to the line and give me this address.
In the future, if you think you may have missed an issue, go
to the above ANC3F web site. If it came out, it will be there. – KS

MONUMENT ?????
From: Donna Gregory <donnagregory77@hotmail.com>
I met the new Friendship Park Rec Center Site Manager last
week. He mentioned to me that some people want to put a
9/11 Memorial on the open space across from the Park on
Van Ness (adjacent to the garden). Have any of you heard
of this? Seems like a strange place to do this...but don't know
any details and he really didn't either. If it is a memorial bench
to sit on that is one thing. But if it is bigger and an obstruction
that is another...

WANTED: ONE TURNTABLE.
Does anyone have a functioning turntable languishing in
their attic or basement, with which they would like to part?
My teenage nephew is keen to listen to my college-years
records, but the turntable I own has slowed down with age
and doesn't seem repairable (I've tried but unreliable speed
remains a problem). Thanks in advance. Alice Thurston

The Lisner-Louise-Dickson-Hurt Home is looking for a regular
volunteer to take inventory of residents' clothing and labeling
clothing upon admission. Also, to label new clothing for residents
as needed. The only skill would be learning to use the computer
program that prints the labels ( this is very easy). The hours are
very flexible, and you could come and go according to
your own schedule. Hours are about 10-20 per week.
The Lisner-Louise-Dickson-Hurt Home is a not for-profit home
for indigent elderly residents of Washington, D.C.

PRECAUTIONS IN DONATING OLD CARS
From: Sender requested that name not be used.
I decided to give my old car to one of the DMV-approved charities in
Maryland. The procedure required me to sign over the title and mail it to
the charity. The charity would then arrange for the car to be towed even
though it was drivable. (A single organization apparently processes
donations for all the charities). A few days later, I got a call scheduling
the tow. I was told to remove the tags and leave the keys in the car. I
left the car on the street. When the towing company didn't show up on
schedule, I removed the keys but left the empty car unlocked. Overnight,
someone got into the car, rummaged through the glove compartment, turned
over the floormats, and pulled down the visors looking for keys. Had I left
them in the car, it would have been stolen. The towing company said it
wasn't responsible and in fact did not tow the car until four days later.
I
reported the incident to the police. As this story demonstrates, a car
without tags will tip thieves off to the fact that the keys may be in it,
and yes, there are car thieves in the neighborhood.
