CRIMES OF INTEREST IN THE  HOOD

**** Apparently there is an upswing in home burglaries in our area.
Make sure doors and windows are locked. It's a good idea to have
storm windows or bars on basement windows. Check you house for
places where an intruder could gain entry fairly easily.

DO NOT CALL LIST FOR CELL PHONES
From: Amy McVey <amybmcvey@msn.com>
A directory of cell phone numbers will soon be published, and all
consumers will have access to it. This will open the doors for solicitors
to call you on your cell phones, using up precious minutes that we pay
lots of money for. The Federal Trade Commission has set up a "do not call"
list. It is called a cell phone registry. To be included on the "do not call" list,
you must call from the number you wish to register. The number is
1-888-382-1222, or you can go to their web site at http://www.donotcall.gov
and add your number to the do not call list. Give this to friends who have
cell phones.

MORE ON VEHICLE REGISTRATION RENEWAL
From: Marion Connell <mfconnell@msn.com>
Your remarks about renewal of motor vehicle registration will be helpful
to many I am sure but please don't forget that this can also be easily
accomplished on line by going to www.dc.gov and looking for the right
prompts. That's how I did it this year and it saved me a lot of time.

UPDATE ON LEAF COLLECTION
From: Pagano, Penny (COUNCIL) <ppagano@dccouncil.us>
Here is an update on leaf collection that Mary Myers, public information
officer at DPW, provided Councilmember Kathy Patterson's office today:
"Leaf collection is a two-month process, not an overnight service. Residents
should rake leaves to the tree box and keep fire hydrants and storm drains
clear. Each half of Ward 3 is scheduled for three, two-week collections.
Neighborhoods east of Chain Bridge Road are still in their first collection
cycle. The second collection begins west of Chain Bridge Road next Monday.
DPW has crews in Ward 3 picking up leaves, five days a week, for the entire
10 weeks of leaf season including Thanksgiving. The workers must rake the
leaves from the curbside and from between parked cars so that they can be
vacuumed. Additionally, wet leaves take longer to vacuum than dry leaves."
