NEW TENLEY LIBRARY

**** From: Tom Hier <hier@biddhier.com>
For those of us who were watching the debate instead of being at the Tenley
Library meeting, do you know if the proposed plans are posted anywhere on
the Internet?
Thanks.
Tom Hier
---------
PS RE: Tenley Library drawings: I called the architectural firm, which
directed me to the D.C. Public Library website, where I found nothing. So
I called Tenley Library and found out that the designs are not posted anywhere,
but they are on exhibit inside the entrance of the library for public viewing
anytime the library is open, which is: M W S 9:30am to 5:30pm and T Th
1 to 9:30pm (closed Friday and Sunday).

**** From KS Theres a picture of the proposed outside of the library in
yesterdays District Extra section of the Washington Post. The story gives
a web site: www.dclibrary.org/rebuilds/index.

**** From: Marthans@aol.com
I would encourage those who would like to comment on the proposed design for
the library to send your comments to the DCPL Project Manager, Dale Barrett.
His e-mail address is dale.barrett@dc.gov. In addition to comments about
the exterior aesthetics of the design, I suggest residents make clear the need
to provide a room divider for the meeting room. In the design presented last
week, the architect stated that the movable wall was an "add alternate"
meaning that the budget does not allow for this feature. Given the shortage of
meeting space in our neighborhood, not being able to divide the room would be
very limiting.

MAIN STREET PROGRAM FOR WISCONSIN AVENUE
From: Browningcb@aol.com
Tenleytown Neighbors Association is hosting a community meeting to discuss
our plans to bring a Main Street program to Wisconsin Avenue in Tenleytown.
This program is nationwide and exists in several neighborhoods in our city, and
is designed to improve and revitalize retail. University of Maryland graduate
students in urban planning, who are working with TNA this semester, will be
present to provide information, obtain community input and answer questions.
The meeting will be on Tuesday, October 26, 7 pm in the Library, 4450 Wisconsin
Avenue, NW.

EVENT AT PEIRCE MILL THIS SATURDAY
From: Richard Abbott <abbott1229@erols.com>

The Friends of Peirce Mill are holding an open house and annual meeting this
Saturday, October 16th, from 10 AM till 3 PM at Peirce Mill, located in
Rock Creek Park at the intersection of Tilden St. and Beach Drive. This is
an opportunity to hear about the progress being made to restore this
historic structure by the Friends, in partnership with the National Park
Service. Many Washingtonians will remember seeing the mill in operation in
years past, and purchasing stone-ground flour there. After the mill broke
down in 1993, the Friends organization was formed to raise money for repairs
to the structure and the wooden milling machinery. At the meeting and open
house, visitors will hear about the work currently underway, as well as
plans for the next phases of the project. Even though tours of the mill are
not possible because of the on-going work, it will be possible to view the
interior and get an idea of the scope of the project. Exhibits on milling
along Rock Creek in the 19th century can be seen at nearby Peirce Barn. A
Rock Creek Park official will also speak about the on-going work to
construct a fish passage in Rock Creek adjacent to the mill. The meeting
will run from 10 AM until 12 noon under canopies near the mill, then from
noon until 2 PM we'll hear folk music from two outstanding musicians, Karen
Ashbrook on the hammered dulcimer and flute, and Andrea Hoag on the fiddle.
Cider and cookies will be provided. The event is free and open to the
public. Information on the Friends of Peirce Mill and the restoration
project can be found on the web at www.peircemill-friends.org.

CRIMES IN THE HOOD

**** From: Gottlieb, Bruce <Bruce.Gottlieb@wilmerhale.com>
My wife and I just moved to the neighborhood and, unfortunately, we had
a break in about one month after we arrived.
It occurred on Oct. 1, 2004 at around 1.45pm. I was working at home but
out to lunch. When I returned, I found the door open and when I entered I
encountered an African-American male, medium height and build, on the steps.
We both paused for a moment, he asked "What are you doing in my house?",
and then came down the steps at me. I retreated out the front door, into my car,
and drove down the block where I found a neighbor with a cell phone who
called the police. By the time the police arrived, the burglar was gone. He most
likely left through the back door, with a laptop and a pair of cufflinks. It seems
likely that he had just arrived when I surprised him, as he had only begun to
ransack the bedroom and he missed a lot of other valuable stuff in other rooms.
He entered through the front door, using a prybar and also kicking the door,
which partially shattered the wood and also broke the lower lock. I had neglected
to engage the upper deadbolt (and we do not have an alarm, tho are getting one now).

Our wonderful nanny is looking for a new family. She is very reliable,
loving and loyal. She took care of our son until he was 18 months old and
attended day care. We continue to work with her now -- our son is very
attached to her. She is now looking for a new family to work for in the
Tenleytown area. You can call her at 202-230-2337 and ask for Mary.
I am also happy to provide a reference or talk to anyone to offer more
information. Thanks, Andrea Durbin

**** From: <r.shale@verizon.net>
I am relatively new to the neighborhood so I may be reporting the obvious...or
maybe not.
I had an expensive experience with Capital Amoco (4900 Wisconsin Ave.). One
night recently, I returned home, and my (electric) drivers-side window would
not go back up. I decided to try a garage nearby. They fixed the window, but
charged $150 more than the Honda dealer would have. I asked for a "new
customer discount", thinking I still might get the next tune-up there but was
met with indifference and attitude from Pete, the man in charge.
No big deal. The window works fine. I just think Capital Amoco charged more
than they should have, and Pete was unwilling to work with a potential
customer.

FOR PROFESSIONAL OR ASPIRING ACTORS IN THE HOOD
From: nancila@att.net

A fantastic professional acting/improv coach -- Gary Austin, founder of
LAs famed Groundlings -- is coming to town. I spent a week at his 10th
Annual Summer Retreat in upstate New York this past summer, and he is
absolutely fantastic. He has an uncanny ability to find those moments when
even the finest actor must make split second choices that make all the
difference in performance or auditions. He helps you discover the right
choices by committing to the unknown, getting out of your head, and
being in the present moment. Its an amazing experience.

Garys going to be in the DC area for three evenings, October 26-28, under
the auspices of the Sylvia Toone Artists Repertory (S.T.A.R.). Hell present t
wo evening improv/acting workshops and on Thursday evening, a
preview-portion of his new solo show, "OIL." Workshops are 4 hours,
$65 each and some discounts apply.

Some quick info about him: Listed Larry Silverberg's The Actor's New York
Guide to Qualified Acting Coaches, Gary coaches (in LA & NYC and other
cities) professional film, TV and theatre personalities. His roster of students,
past and present, reads like a celebrity showcase and includes Phil Hartman,
Laraine Newman, Lisa Kudrow, and Pat Morita, among others. Many Saturday
Night Live players and other well-known performers, were originally young
Groundlings. During her Academy Award acceptance speech a couple of years
ago, Helen Hunt specifically thanked and credited Gary Austin as one of her
acting teachers who gave her "&.a way to learn about myself and the world
and a way to express myself.
If youre interested and need more info, contact me at nancila@att.net. Thanks.
