SOME CRIMES IN THE ‘HOOD
**** From: NDBlanchet@aol.com
There have been recent breakins on Ingomar st. 3900 a week or two and
the big construction project at 41st and Ingomar just last week.
Somebody
is working our area.
**** From: Nadine <ngranof@rcn.com>
Several Saturdays ago I saw an unusual event in the alley behind the
4100
block of Connecticut Avenue. It looked like some kind of raid was going
on, with several police cars, officers, etc. Does anyone know what that
was
all about? Nothing has been in any of the papers about it. I live
around the
corner from 4100 Ct. and am concerned about the increasing noise in the
neighborhood. Did the raid have anything to do with the noise problem?
Thanks.

MORE ON FIRE HAZARDS
**** From: Tom Hier <hier@biddhier.com>
Do not leave old paint or stain-soaked rags lying around. I once left a
stain-soaked rag in a heap in the basement, and came home about 12
hours
later to find it smoldering and ready to spontaneously combust. Had I
been
just a few hours later, it could have been disastrous.
**** From: lfkaiser <lfkaiser@starpower.net>
We had a similar horrible experience last year--our 100-year-old house
caught fire while workers were stripping paint with blow torches. (btw,
the
fire dept did an amazingly fine job by us!) I then insisted that our
painter
finish the job using a new Swedish method that involves softening the
paint
with infrared heat. It's much safer in that it doesn't burn the wood
and
doesn't release harmful lead fumes. He finished the job with these new
strippers and, although doubtful at first, admitted at the end that
they
work extremely well. I only wish I'd insisted that he use that method
from
the get-go. For more info: http://www.eco-strip.com; or

HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL OPPORTUNITY
From: anc3B@aol.com
This Fall there will be another opportunity for DC residents to drop
off any
household “Hazardous Waste” items such as old paint or paint thinner,
yard
or household chemicals and the such. The date will be October 23rd at
the
Carter Barron Amphitheater. This is a great opportunity to clean house
of
these
potentially deadly items at no cost. Because many homes only have a few
items
why not organize with your neighbors to have one person volunteer to
collect
and drop off these items. Be environmentally friendly and dispose of
such
items in a safe manner.
QUESTION ABOUT VAMOOSE BUS
From KS – I’m planning to take the Vamoose bus to NY in a few weeks.
Has anyone had any experience with this service? It was advertised in

SOME METHODS FOR REACHING CONGRESS RE: DC GUN
LAWS AND OTHER ISSUES
**** From: Joanne Levine <joannelevine@earthlink.net>
You can get contact information at dcvote.org. On the right side of
their
home page, click on their Advocacy Alert regarding this [gun]
legislation.
The site will give you phone & fax numbers and contains links to
e-mail
addresses.
**** From: Benjamin Slade publicmailbox@benslade.com>
Save your (virtual) breath. I've read that since there's no way to
tell where the email is coming from, most congressman and senators
don't
pay attention to it with respect to getting feedback from constituents.

The House e-mail format is:

You can get a list of representatives at www.house.gov
**** From: bethhaile <elizabeth_haile@hotmail.com>
It is indeed a waste of time to email. Phone calls are much better.
However, the best way to get Congress to listen to us, even though we
have no representation, is to work with a bigger group. DC has a
chapter of the Million Mom March United with the Brady Campaign to
Prevent Gun Violence, which is working to prevent the repeal of our
gun control laws. The head of the DC group is Ladd Everitt - contact
him

**** From: nelson jacobsen <nelsonjacobsen@yahoo.com>
I would suggest if your message is about a specific subject that you do
a
bit of research to find out which members sit on a committee that
covers
your area and call the office to find the name of the staffer that does
the
work and then address your remarks to them directly. You would want to
ask the person answering the phone the name of the staffer and how they
preferred to be contacted and go from there or contact the committee
directly.

KITTY-CATS NEEDING HOMES
**** From: Darnot@aol.com
CONTACT: Ginger.Rose@cescr.com
Charlie is a smoked tabby with white and Vinnie is a silver Maine Coon
tuxedo.
Beauties, both. Please help them live out their remaining years with
dignity!
------
Charlie and Vinnie live with my parents. Due to an illness, my parents
are
selling their home and will be living in an apartment until they decide
whether
or not they want to rebuild a small home or move into an Assisted
Living Home.
Because of this, I am desperately trying to find a home for these two
boys.
They
can be split up. The problem is that Charlie is 12-years old and
Vinnie is 14-years old. Very few people are interested in adopting a
cat in their
"senior" years. They are both in great health and are current on their
vaccinations
and blood work. Can anybody spare a little space in their home for one
of
them?
I'm open to any suggestions that anybody has. I don't want to euthanize
them,
but
that is better than sticking them in a cage somewhere and destroying
them
emotionally.
The quality of their life in their final years is very important to me.
They
have lived a
great, loving life so far and they deserve to be happy. Thanks to
anybody
who
responds!

WISCONSIN AVENUE CORRIDOR TRANSPORTATION STUDY
From: Bird, Melissa <mbird@louisberger.com>
NOTICE PUBLIC MEETINGS
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is beginning a study
to
investigate transportation management improvements in the Wisconsin
Avenue Corridor Area and traffic and parking management in surrounding
neighborhoods. The approximate study area boundaries for this section
of
Wisconsin Avenue are Fessenden Street to the North, Reno Road to the
East, Whitehaven Parkway to the South and Whitehaven Parkway/Glover
Park
to the West. These efforts are in response to Ward 3 citizen concerns
regarding safety, speeding, traffic congestion, neighborhood cut
through
traffic and insufficient parking spaces in the study area and the
potential exacerbation of these issues related to the anticipated
development in the Tenleytown Metro area. The DDOT study team will
provide information regarding the study area, project scope, and
schedule and will solicit public comments on specific issues and
concerns.
Due to the large size of the study area, DDOT will host TWO PUBLIC
MEETINGS, in two different locations. An Open House will be held from
6:30 pm to 7:00 pm with a presentation followed by discussion from 7:00
pm to 9:00 pm. The meeting on October 6th will focus more on issues in
the northern end of the study area and the meeting on October 7th will
focus more on issues in the southern end of study area. All residents
are welcome to attend either meeting regardless of the area of their
concerns.

I am a 26-year-old professional female, looking to
rent a furnished room either on the red line metro or
within walking distance (up to half an hour walk is
fine) from American University where I work. I need to
move as soon as possible because my commute is too
long. I am a very responsible and clean, fun and
friendly housemate. I can afford to pay $500-600. My
position is temporary at the moment but may become
permanent. Therefore I can only commit to rent until
January 2005 for sure. I originally come from Belarus,
but have lived in Russia, Japan, England and travelled
throughout the world. If you travel a lot and need
someone to stay in the house, feed the pets, etc, I'd
be happy to do it. Please contact me either via email

or on my cell [(703) 395-7644].
Thank you so much for your consideration.

Over the last few months there have been numerous car crashes in Glover
Park
which demonstrate that they actually do occur. On Tunlaw road a driver
using
a cell phone hit two parked cars and flipped the car they were driving.
There was a crash at the intersection of Tunlaw and 42nd streets where
many
previous accidents have occurred and last night there was a crash on
37th
street near the Blockbuster parking lot entrance. In addition there
have
been numerous side swipes of cars taking off side mirrors and bumpers.
Crashes are occurring because of inattentive drivers going to fast!
Recently
a car door was taken off on Wisconsin Ave. when the driver opened it
without
making sure it was safe to do so. Remember, it is always the
responsibility
of the exiting driver to make sure it is clear to open the door and
exit.
Please look for pedestrians and cars traveling the wrong direction on
one
way streets and have a safe Fall. You're Glover Park Public Safety

JOIN REP. KENNEDY NEXT WEDNESDAY & SUPPORT DC
VOTING RIGHTS!
From: DC Democracy Fund, Sean Tenner
<dcdemocracyfund@democracyinaction.org>
Please join Congressman Patrick Kennedy at an exciting DC Democracy
Fund reception at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, October 6th. Congressman
Kennedy is helping us fight Congressional attempts to overturn DC’s
local gun safety laws, and has been a longtime supporter of DC voting
rights.
In 1963, Congressman Kennedy’s uncle, President John F. Kennedy,
oversaw the last expansion of voting rights to DC residents when the
U.S.
constitution was amended to give us the right to vote for President.
We’re still fighting. DC Democracy Fund is the nation’s only Political
Action Committee dedicated to supporting Federal candidates who back
DC residents’ right to vote and control our own affairs.
On Wednesday, you can learn about the DC voting rights issues pending
in Congress and talk with Kennedy about his fellow New Englander John
Kerry’s campaign for the White House:
DC Democracy Fund Reception with Congressman Patrick Kennedy
Wednesday, October 6th
6:00 PM
Hall of States Building
8th Floor - Terrace
400 North Capitol Street, NW
Closest Metro: Union Station (Red Line)
As always, we ask that those attending our DC Democracy Fund receptions
to contribute an amount they can afford to our cause.
In addition to electing pro-DC voting rights candidates like Illinois
Senate
nominee Barack Obama, a civil rights/voting rights attorney who would
also
become the only African-American in the U.S. Senate, DC Democracy Fund
is working to fight the attempt by Congressman Mark Souder (R-Indiana)
to
overturn DC’s local gun safety laws.
Thousands of independent voters in Souder’s district will soon be
getting
phone calls, letting them know that even Souder’s hometown paper thinks
overturning DC’s gun safety laws against our will is a bad idea!
We need leaders like Obama in the Congress to pass a DC voting rights
bill – and we need to stop Congressmen like Souder from overturning our
local laws. And we need your help to make a difference.
Congressman Kennedy and I hope to see you at 6:00 PM on Wednesday,
October 6.
Sean Tenner
Executive Director
DC Democracy Fund
