K-6 AFTER SCHOOL SCIENCE PROGRAM
From: Patricia.Brink@usdoj.gov <Patricia.Brink@usdoj.gov>

Janney Elementary's after school program, JED, recently received a
grant from the Tenleytown Advisory Neighborhood Commission (3E)
to provide four special after school programs during the school year.
Two will be science programs presented by Mad Science of Maryland
and two will be interactive children's theater programs put on by the
Rainbow Entertainment Company. The first program will be The Magic
of Science! on September 21, at 4:30 at JED (which is located in basement
of the Elderbrook Church on River Road, just below the Container Store.)
All area K-6 students are invited to attend the 45 minute presentation. Please
RSVP to Glen Sitney at 362-2685 or Glen.Sitney@janneyextendedday.com so
that we know how many people to expect. Space will be limited. Check the
JED website -- janneyextendedday.com -- for information on this program
and the others scheduled for October 19, November 16, and January 11.

ANOTHER HOUSE FIRE CAUSED BY PAINTERS USING BLOWTORCH

Last week a house in AU Park was severely damaged by fire caused by painters
removing old paint. The police said this was the second on third fire they had
seen in recent weeks in this area causes by the burning of old paint to remove it.
In this case, the painters had already left, thinking everything was fine. Apparently
a small area smoldered for some time and then burst into flame. The fire was put
out fairly quickly, but there was tremendous damage done by smoke and water.
The family had to move out for a time and many of their possessions are lost to
the smoke damage.

[From KS – I was nearby and saw the action. The firefighters and police officers
did a terrific job in handling this dramatic event. Nobody was hurt. The fire was
put out and the house secured with plywood afterward. The family was helped with
whatever services they needed. Our tax dollars were well used by the firefighters and
police in support of the family in this event.
I also realized how important it is to make sure that painters do not use heat/
fire to get rid of old paint. ]

CRIMES IN THE ‘HOOD

**** anc3b@aol.com
Between 3:00-3:30 AM on August 31, two suspects slashed tires on over a
dozen cars on Calvert Street. A witness described the suspects as white males
in their early 20's, both about 6 feet in height, and thin to medium in build.
They both had dark, shoulder-length hair. One suspect had on a white t-shirt
and baggy blue jeans. The other was wearing blue jeans and a dark t-shirt.
The suspect with the white t-shirt had a 6 inch knife that he used to slash the
tires. They were last seen traveling on foot, northbound on 39th Street. MPD
responded quickly and canvassed the area for about 30-40 minutes but the
suspects seemed to have vanished quickly. They may have fled to a waiting
vehicle or the suspects may live in the immediate area. MPD has put the area
on special attention for the next week. If anyone has any information about the
crime, please contact at (202) 282-0070.

**** No suspect has been identified yet in the rape case that occurred in
Glover Park. It’s not a good idea to go into that park alone.
