Daytime Car Break-in in the alley behind the 3700 block of Brandywine.
Thieves smashed the window of my neighbor's minivan parked behind their house.
They stole two battery operated head phones visible and a CD case. The
advice from the police was not to leave ANY thing in the car that's
visible--no bag, no CD, no coins, nada.

They also found a mountain bike in the alley. If you think it might be
yours, please contact _bellsue@aol.com_ (mailto:bellsue@aol.com) with details.

DEVELOPMENT ISSUES
From: Ann C <afhindc@starpower.net>
One concern I have about the development plans for Wisconsin, etc, that I've
not heard addressed, is how will the sewer-storm drainage lines handle
higher occupancy. This may be a non-issue. But in light of the last
downpour we had at the end of July, which resulted in several basements
flooding from the sewer lines, not from basement walls - I'd like to know
any ideas as to why houses that have had no flooding previously, suddenly
had sewer backups. We've had downpours before, albeit not many.
Thanks - Ann

SEEKING (THE PERFECT!) SPANISH TUTOR:
Five adults are looking for a tutor to give us private group language
instruction in Spanish. Our primary emphasis in learning is to develop our
conversational Spanish skills rather than mastering grammatical intricacies.
However, because 4 of us are absolute beginners, we definitely need to first
learn the foundations and basics of the language in a structured and
organized way. We are looking for someone with the following: (1)
experience in teaching Spanish to adults, (2) skill in providing a logical
and organized structure to the lessons, (3) flexibility and willingness to
adapt lessons to the needs/desires of group, and (4) a sense of fun! We'd
like to meet around 7:30 p.m. on a weekly basis (1 hour lessons) in
Bethesda. Please contact Chhaya at <craodc@aol.com> or 202-237-7905
if you are interested or if you can recommend someone.
Muchas gracias!

have been a DCPS teacher for the last 3 and half years. I am a mother of
four children who attend Lafayette Elementary School, Deal Junior High
School and Wilson Senior High School.

administrators. I have a personal investment in making our schools run better
for my children and all our children. In addition, I have a unique perspective
as a parent and as a teacher. For more information please visit my website:

TENLEYTOWN ENVIRONMENTAL OPPORTUNITY

"Securing the Region's Green Infrastructure: The Challenge, The Tools"

As recently reported in The Washington Post, the greater Washington
region lost green space to new development at a rate estimated to be between
28 to 43 acres a day during the period from 1986 to 2020. Measured using
satellite imagery, the region saw the percentage of developed land go
from 12 per cent to around 18 per cent. The Green Infrastructure
Demonstration Project, undertaken by the Metropolitan Council of
Governments and the National Park Service, has underscored the need for
greater public and private effort to preserve and link the region's "green
infrastructure." Absent greater effort, charismatic resources such as the
Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River may become substantially impaired.

Please plan to join J. Glenn Eugster (Assistant Regional Director for
Partnerships, National Park Service National Capitol Region), James
McElfish (Senior Attorney and Director, ELI Sustainable Use of Land
Program) and Elizabeth Berry (Senior Advisor for Environmental
Affairs, Executive Office of the Mayor, Washington, DC) for a discussion of the
challenges and the potential tools to build the Region's green
infrastructure. McElfish is the author's of ELI's recent guide,
Nature-Friendly Ordinances <
http://www.elistore.org/books_detail.asp?ID=10989> as well as numerous
studies on sustainable growth practices and policies in the Chesapeake
region.
When: September 9, 2004
12 noon to 2:00 p.m.
(Speakers will begin at 12:15 p.m.)

Where: Seventh Floor Conference Room
