SAFER LIGHTING NEEDED ALONG MILITARY ROAD SIDEWALK
From: Karin Hillhouse <karindia@erols.com>
A few of us living on Military Road were talking the other night and
wondered how we might encourage the installation of more street lighting
between 43rd Streeet and Belt. Each one of us had had the disquieting
experience of being followed by a car that stopped and pulled to the curb
after passing us while we were walking along the sidewalk on the south side
of the street after dark. In each instance a passenger got out and followed
us on foot for a block or so, apparently evaluating whether an easy target
was at hand. Those few blocks are poorly lit and seem well designed for
trouble.
Does anyone on the list know if it's possible to get additional street
lighting sooner rather than later for such an area? An officer or city
department to call?
Many thanks,
Karin Hillhouse

WONDERFUL IDEA FROM NEIGHBOR
From: Nadine Horenstein/Clifford Johnson <nadineh@mindspring.com>
I was wondering what you thought about the idea of having a
travel advice section in the Communit-e. It would be a vehicle for
people to get ideas and advice about places they are thinking about
traveling from neighbors. For example, if someone was planning a
trip to Hawaii, they could post something and those with information
could reply. Any thoughts on if this is worth doing or fits with what
you have going already?

CRUELTY ISSUE
Seeking the owner of two matching brown and white--fairly large---English
Spring Spaniels. (not to be confused with the two Black/white Springer
spaniels living at Alton & 39th St.). Want to report mistreatment of
the
dog.
At the corner of Nebraska and Albemarle St., my friend Grace saw a young
man
abuse one of the dogs on Thurs. August 12 approximately 11:30 a.m. The
young man walked with one dog on a leash, and the other free. He yelled
angrily and dragged the unleashed cowering dog across the concrete street
on
its back. Grace does not have email, so am sending this out on her behalf.
I once saw the dogs with an older tall man at Ft. Reno park, so suspect must
live in the area. Many thanks for any information on contacting the owner.

BEAUTIFUL DE-CLAWED KITTY NEEDS NEW HOME. Gracie is a small,
gorgeous, mostly-grey tortie. She belongs to my sister, who can no longer
care
for her (my sister has had three back surgeries in the past two years and
often
stays with my parents). Both my parents and I have cats with claws, so we
do
not have suitable homes for Gracie. Gracie is two years old. She is timid,
but
very affectionate with those she knows well (she sleeps right next to my
sister
at night). Gracie gets along very well with small dogs. She loves to play!
Please consider opening up your home to Gracie. If you are interested, please
write to me at sheehancat@aol.com. Thanks.

Sugar and Butch -- the best cats ever
Sugar and Butch need to find them a new home. Please let me know if you,
or
anyone you know, would like to adopt them -- they are the best.
Two Wonderful Cats Need a New Home!
* Sugar - female, 5 years old, black and white, very healthy
* Butch - male, 5 years old, grey and white, very healthy
* They are brother and sister and must be adopted together
* Both fully declawed and are indoor cats only. They cannot go outside at
all as they are defenseless without their claws.
* Very people-friendly, gentle, cuddly etc...
* Very low-maintenance (eat only dry cat food, share one litter box, very
healthy)

CONSTRUCTION AT SEARS BUILDING
From: <iahunt@verizon.net>
Does anyone know why construction at the old Sears building has
for the most part come to a stop or at least a crawl? Perhaps it's simply
because things slow down in the summer, but I am curious.

RE: COMPUTER HACKER
**** From: <marinaccio@comcast.net>
Thanks for the e-mail about the hacker. I want to alert you about a
potential problem in that regard. Around Aug 12 I did not use my computer
for several days. When I did I found I could no longer respond to e-mail
on
Comcast and must use an alternate. I am wondering if others on your list
have the same problem. If so the hacker has done some dirty work. Thanks.
**** From: Eldeno@aol.com
I recently experienced a "break in my firewall" with a hacker corrupting
my
system and affecting one of my email addresses. I have been able to retrieve
most of significant documents and am functioning well again. In the process
I did decide to upgrade with a new computer with all the possible internet
security
systems in place.
Thanks again.

Bunk bed:
Does your family need a bunk bed? We have one that we'd love to give to
someone who needs it. Very basic, plain wood. My sons enjoyed it for years.
Or-- do you have a favorite place to donate furniture that we should know
about? I called Salvation Army, but they can't pick up until late September.
Our goal is to pass it along to a good home as soon as possible!

We are new parents to a wonderful two and a half week old little girl, and
are beginning to explore childcare options for when mom returns to work
in November. Ideally, we would like a nanny share arrangement, in AU park,
with a fun and loving family who has a child in a similar age range. We are
open to our house, or yours or a combination. We have begun interviewing
nannies but are also open to meeting with yours if you already have one.
We
are willing to be flexible with timing and arrangements, as our first concern
is
finding a loving nanny to care for our child. If you are interested in discussing
this with us, please call us at home. 202-362-4820. Thank you

DDOT JOINS REGIONAL ANTI-DRUNK DRIVING CAMPAIGN
From: Rice, Bill (DDOT) <Bill.Rice@dc.gov>
(Washington, DC) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) joined
the
Metropolitan Police Department and police departments from Fairfax and
Montgomery Counties to kick off Checkpoint Strikforce, a regional six-month
anti-drunk driving campaign.
Checkpoint Strikforce was launched in the late afternoon on August 26 on
Canal Road, just west of the Georgetown bars, with a sobriety checkpoint
to
intercept and deter happy hour drunk driving. Officers administered field
sobriety tests, a key part of drunk driving dissuasion. The campaign
features weekly checkpoints and extended hours in the District and a
$320,000 radio campaign aimed at the hard-to-reach 21-to-35 male driver.
UPPER WI AVE. CORRIDOR STUDY
From: Bill Rogers <bill.rogers@mac.com>
I have not reviewed the draft neighborhood plan for Tenleytown nor
attended any meetings or presentations. I would welcome any
opportunity to review the draft documents.
I am writing as a
citizen/resident/taxpayer/driver/parker/breather/transit rider to
express two opinions:
1. I applaud the city's efforts (and that of its professional staff)
to raise densities in the area, and to thereby:
* increase the supply of housing in the District's marketplace,
* improve the sales tax base, revenues, and long-term financial
health of our local government, thereby lowering property tax rates in the
long-term,
* improve the long-term prospects for lower Metro operating deficits
& higher service frequencies,
* create more vibrant, 24-hour "mixed-use" activity clusters which
reduce street crime,
* mix residential & commercial land uses to reduce total traffic &
transportation demand,
* encourage greater development density around Metro stations to
help reduce suburban sprawl, regional & global environmental decay, global
international violence, & the mortal threat of global warming to the
lives of
all future Earthlings.
I am SO THANKFUL I do not live in a suburban municipality which is
only interested in protecting its provincial selfish interest, while trying
to
transfer its problems and congestion onto its neighbors. As a former
transportation-specialist city planner in Southern California, I can attest
that this type of predatory planning and zoning is responsible for such
unsolvable problems there. Local protection of neighborhood
parking availability can condemn entire regions to a living hell,
sitting still amid toxic, carcinogenic fumes. Perhaps it may one day
condemn an entire planet.
I hope the local resistance encountered by your efforts will help
motivate the District's "leaders" to finally get off their rear ends and
overhaul the District's pathetic residential parking permit system (to form
one or two block local zones to protect the street parking of local
property owners) and allow guest parking privileges for the daytime or
overnight visitors of residents.
2. Given the likely increase in paved areas over the next generation,
and the continuing problems of residential basement and street flooding,
I urge the District government to perform a comprehensive hydrology study
of
the larger Tenleytown area. The results of this study should be
incorporated not only into the planning process, but perhaps more importantly,
into long-term funding programs for public works and debt,, the commercial
building permit process, and any potential future impact fees or exactions
to
be assessed against developers.
Most of the water landing between Western Avenue, Harrison Street,
40th Street, Yuma Street, and 47th Street has no where to go, other than
basements and back yards.
– END –
