Readers should be advised that people conducting door-to-door solicitations
for real charities are required to have identification and a permit in DC.

CRIMES IN THE ‘HOOD

**** From: Stacey Marien <samarien@yahoo.com>
I had a call last night (asking for me by name), about
9pm from a woman claiming that I had $150 in late fees
with Pepco. I was flabbergasted and when I said I had
no such thing, she insisted I was lying. At that
point I hung up the phone - I'm sure the next step
would have been her asking me for my credit card info
over the phone in order to pay the charges. I am on
the phone to Pepco right now to report it.

DAMAGE BY TRASH TRUCK
From: Asked to remain anonymous:

I am very upset with the way the City has treated me. More than six months
ago a trash truck damaged my brick wall as it turned into the alley. I
reported this damage to the city and the police. I have no eyewitness, but
I did hear the trucks go through that morning. When I came outside, the
brick wall was down. I have filed a claim for the damages but have been
told that the trash workers deny the charge so DC govt. will not pay. Of
course they deny the charge. Why is their word believed over mine?
It took them more than six months just to tell me that.

As this is not the first time this has happened to me--last time I paid
$1800 to build a new fence , I am particularly miffed. We pay high taxes
here and I find the response from the City is outrageous. I have called
Kathy Patterson's office for help, but they are not getting much response
either. Even if I pay to rebuild again, this is likely to happen and I will
have to pay again. Does anybody know how I can get the city to take
responsibility? thanks.

you never know what will happen)...Sit-A-Pet is a fav and they have a gal

number, but their website is _www.sitapet.com_ (http://www.sitapet.com)

STARPOWER IN TROUBLE?

**** From: Richard L. Paul <rlpaulproductions@starpower.net>
They're not going under just yet.
There was an article in the Post recently (Business section I think) that
they are having a very hard time competing with Comcast.

**** From: Ken Giles & Davida Perry <kenanddavida@starpower.net>
Yes, apparently Starpower is looking for a buyer. (No great loss to us,
our service has been awful.) Would people with recommendations
for/against other providers share them with all of us through the
newsletter? Thanks.

MORE ABOUT BILL AND OTHER HOMELESS MEN
From: Ellen O'Brien <obriene@georgetown.edu>

I am a Communit-E subscriber. I recently emailed my friend, Sczerina
Perot (an AU Park resident and provider of legal services to the
homeless), the posting from your newsletter about Bill. She has drafted
a note (see below) that offers some information that may be of interest
to those concerned about Bill.
- - - - -

I am so cheered that so many of my neighbors have expressed concern about
Bill's whereabouts. I work with people who are homeless every day and I
know from my clients that they deeply appreciate the people who simply speak
to them and give them a cheerful greeting or a smile. Many of you obviously
were even more generous, and I'm glad there is so much compassion out there
for Bill's plight and so much concern for him as a person.

Although I don't know where Bill is living now, I believe he is doing well.
All I can say is that the Community Council for the Homeless at Friendship
Place has been instrumental at getting permanent homes for people like Bill,
and that one appropriate way to help Bill and the many others like him would
be to send donations to Community Council for the Homeless at Friendship
Place. They are at 4713 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20016, there
phone number is 364-1419. They do a great deal to make people's dreams of
being housed come true. And, no, I'm not on their Board or anything. I
just admire their work.

Another way you could help locally is by cooking and delivering a small meal
for the 8-10 homeless men who stay at St. Lukes, corner of Calvert and
Wisconsin. You can drop it off at 6:45 or you and your family can stay and
share the meal and get to know some of the people who will be eating it. To
sign up for a night to cook, you can call Bobbie Carr 301-881-1195.

If you are a lawyer, yet another way to help is to volunteer for the place I
work. We represented over 2,000 people last year who were homeless or at
risk of becoming homeless and had legal claims to resolve. We helped people
get disability benefits, helped people keep their homes, and helped people
overcome the many obstacles to getting into shelter. I work specifically
with a very invisible homeless group; parents and their children who are
homeless. The average age of a homeless person in America today is 8. Our
volunteer coordinator at the Legal Clinic is "Queen" Kuenyehia, 328-5510.

From: Lisa Wackler <gatorwack@yahoo.com>

Just a head's up to the neighborhood...someone is out stealing UPS packages in AU Park.  This happened to us yesterday (July 28th).  Thanks to a kind neighbor who found our package a couple of blocks from our house, it all ended happily.  The thief apparently tossed the package to the side once he or she determined that the contents (children's clothing) weren't an adequate payoff.  What galls me is that UPS reported the package delivered at 12:38 p.m., so the thief stole the thing while I was in my house.  Anyone expecting anything of value be forewarned!
