RE: PREVIOUS QUESTION ABOUT KEYLESS ENTRY
SYSTEMS IN THIS AREA
From: Lawrence M. Miller <lawrence.miller@starpower.net>
Many keyless entry systems do not work well in the Tenleytown area, or
at all within a block or two of the towers. Radio frequency
interference is one of the prices for living here. We had to buy three
kitchen phones before getting one that does not receive WTOP. When our
son was a baby, Fisher-Price had to install a special circuit in our
baby monitor to trap out interference. Weather radios don't work here.
Two-way radios with an advertised two-mile range have a one-block
range. We need special antennas to get decent FM reception on more than
a few stations.
I doubt that your keyless entry system is a lemon. Our Chevy system
barely works here, but works great everywhere else we travel. Our Acura
system works fine in front of our house on Verplanck Place, but not at
Whole Foods. Many neighbors have commented about the problem. Which
systems work around here is likely a function of the frequency they
happen to use; your loaner car was probably on a different frequency
than your own car, not as susceptible to the interfering frequencies.
If your keyless system works well elsewhere and only fails in
Tenleytown/AU Park, welcome to the club.

AUTOMATED POSTAL CENTER GOES INTO SERVICE
AT FRIENDSHIP POST OFFICE
From: Richard Abbott <abbott1229@erols.com>
The Friendship Post Office has gone hi-tech! An Automated Postal Center
(APC) was recently installed in the lobby. One of the first such
installations in D.C., the self-service kiosk provides easy access to
postal products in the same way that Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs)
operate at banks, but charges no fee. The APC lets customers weigh and
mail letters and parcels and purchase stamps using credit or debit
cards. During busy periods at the Post Office counters, it should be a
real time-saver. Following a 30-day test at Friendship and other post
offices in major metropolitan areas, the Postal Service expects to
deploy 2500 of these machines across the country. The APC is accessible
at all times when the lobby is open: 6 AM to 7 PM Monday through
Friday, 7 AM to 5 PM on Saturdays, and 9 AM to 4 PM on Sundays. The
Customer Advisory Council for the Friendship Station invites comments on
this new service from postal customers. The Council can be reached by
e-mail at friendshippcac@aol.com or by fax
at 202-523-2016.

WHAT HAPPENED TO HOMELESS MAN?

homeless man named "Bill" who used to be seen in the
neighborhoods near Rodman's / Fox TV? He slept on a cot near
the top of the hill on 41st (near Ingomar, I think). We haven't seen
him in a few weeks and my wife reports that she hasn't seen his
cot and SuperCan at their usual location?

work, so our fabulous nanny, Juliet, is available on Tuesdays and
Fridays during our absence (mid-July to mid-September). She works for
another family Mon, Wed, and Thurs. She doesn't drive, but is great with
public transportation, and she prefers to stay in the AU Park/ Chevy Chase

to the minute, legal, English-speaking, and very attentive and responsible.

REPLY TO COMMENTS RE: GEORGETOWN DAY SCHOOL
IN LAST ISSUE
From: <anavaro@verizon.net>
Ms. Novak - I felt compelled to respond to your Communit-e posting
in which you are seeking to round up opposition to the proposed
Georgetown Day School construction. I simply cannot fathom how
anyone could be opposed to allowing a school to improve its facilities
in order to continue to attract high quality students and to continue the
utility of its urban campus. I cannot imagine a better neighbor than a
well-maintained private preparatory school that likely attracts families
to its immediate neighborhood. Driving that school away, if that were
the end result of misguided opposition like yours, could only be a
detriment to the neighborhood and the city. Furthermore, it's attitudes
like yours that keep the Wisconsin Avenue Tenleytown strip incredibly
unappealing -- with less community opposition perhaps we'd be so lucky
to have a bit of the great retail and restaurant development that has
happened in downtown Bethesda, for example.
One reason that my husband and I chose AU Park for our home is its
proximity to urban services and to a number of great private schools to
which we hope to send our now very young son. Even if you don't have
children that might like to attend a school like GDS without having to
drive for an hour to the suburbs, surely you can appreciate the happy sight
of teenagers learning and playing sports. If it's traffic that you are concerned
about, I respectfully suggest that you must not drive much if you really
think
that a few more cars driven to a school will have any significant impact
on our
urban environment. Traffic in Washington is horrendous and that's a fact
that
you just have to live with if you want to live in the city. I guess that
you and
others like you must have lived in AU Park for many many years, but it long
ago became part of a big and complicated urban environment -- folks who don't
like that should probably consider a move out to where you can enjoy your
cup
of coffee without being bothered by the sounds of the city.
Ann Navaro.
