CRIMES IN THE ‘HOOD

**** From: Stephanie.Bragg@usdoj.gov

available. This includes arrests and convictions for crimes committed
in 2D.

**** According to the June 9 Northwest Current (P.4), 44-year old
Ralph J. Franks was arrested for entering homes in 2D, sometimes through
unlocked doors, and taking purses that were near the door. He was
charged with 12 burglaries. Over a period of several months he entered
at least 11 homes and a business while residents were home. He
said he looked through windows to see if purses were near the door.

SINGLE DAY-LONG PARKING PERMITS – –
WHY NOT?
From: Phalen, Jan <jan.phalen@AoA.gov>

My cleaning lady comes once a week for 3 hours. She parks in the front of
my house and just got a ticket for exceeding the 2 hour residential parking
permission. Other than parking in the rear (difficult) or on a
non-restricted street, has anyone found a solution? The police will only
give me a permit for 2 weeks with an extension for another 2 weeks,
presumably after I visit the station again. 26 visits a year could be a
problem. Why aren't there single day long-term permits available? or are
there other solutions?
Thanks, Jan Phalen

LEMON LAWS
From: Susanjaquet@aol.com

Has anyone had experience with Lemon Laws, particularly as they relate to
nonfunctioning keyless entry on cars in our area? I recently bought a car and
its keyless entry feature (remote) works only at certain times, in certain
places. The car dealer in Rockville states that it can NOT be fixed. (Ironically,
the keyless entry on the "loaner car" dealer provided while mine was in the
shop worked fine.) Dealer further states that problem has to do with proximity
to radio/TV towers in Tenley area and therefore refuses to make any further
attempts at repair. Keyless entry is not just a convenience at the grocery
store but also a safety feature for anyone who drives alone at night. Appreciate
any thoughts!

HEARING FOR EXTENSION OF GEORGETOWN
DAY SCHOOL
From: Anne Novak <Anne_Novak@ita.doc.gov>

On June 22 at 1pm at 1 Judiciary Square, 441 4th St. in Ste. 220 there
will be a hearing on the extension of Georgetown Day School. Please
participate in this meeting by telling the Board of Zoning "NO!" for all
of our sake. Do we want more construction, cars and noise in the
neighborhood? Part of the plan calls for a parking lot (garage) so that
students can drive to school. This may mean another entrance to the
school on River Rd., causing even more congestion and disturbances.
Please help hold back the ever increasing development that jeapordizes
our clean and lovely neighborhood.
Anne M. Novak

FACT SHEET ON THE PROPOSED STODDERT RECREATION
CENTER
From: anc3b@aol.com

A New Recreation Center for Stoddert:
Fact Sheet
“Improved Recreation Space for the Youth of Glover Park”
New City Recreation Centers
The D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation is going to build 19 new
recreation centers in the District. One, the Stoddert Recreation Center,
is planned for Ward 3. Based on community input, DPR has agreed
that the new Stoddert center will be smaller than the others and will
focus on activities for Glover Park’s youth.

The Current Recreation Center
+ Built in 1959
+ A one-room 600 square foot facility
+ Does not meet current DPR co-operative play center code

Why a New Recreation Center?
+ Demands on the current facility have greatly outstripped its capacity.
+ The youth of Glover Park need indoor play space for after school,
weekend and summer activities.
+ The current Center is too small to meet the requirements of so many
age groups during a typical day, from the 2- to 4-year-olds in the morning
Co-operative Play Program to young teens after school.
+ At about 17,000 square feet, neighboring Stoddert school is by far the
smallest in the District, roughly 60,000 square feet smaller than an
average-size D.C. school. Although the smallest school in size, it has
the densest student population at 171 percent of capacity. The school,
which is not scheduled for renovation at this time, does not have space
for normal school activities such as physical education, school assemblies,
and after school care.

Design Goals for the New Center

The Friends of Glover Park, ANC 3B, and the Glover Park Citizens
Association have received a lot of input from the community on the
proposed new Center. Based on this input, several design goals were
given to the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation.
+ Green space and outdoor play space are given high priority.
+ The foot print of the building will be no bigger than 17,000 square feet.
+ If at all, the impact on the playing field area will be minimal.
+ Tree preservation is a priority. The large oak tree is very important to
the community as are all the trees. Any trees that are taken down should
be replaced. Landscaping for the total area should be improved.
+ The existing playground can be moved or a new tot playground added.
If moved, the playground should be of equal or better quality. Amenities
such as a spray park and picnic area should be considered.
+ Building materials will be durable. The style of the building will complement
the architecture of the neighborhood and Stoddert Elementary School and will
be built to be energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
+ Providing adequate parking is critical. There should be at least 35 off-street
parking spaces to be shared by Stoddert School and Recreation Center.

EXCERPT FROM THE BRAZIL BULLETIN
From: Heilbron, Shana (COUNCIL) <sheilbron@dccouncil.us>
Harold Brazil, At-Large Councilmember
Chair, Committee on Economic Development

Brazil Joins DC Marketing Center for Presentation of "Starting A
Business in D.C."

Councilmember Brazil joined Michael Stevens, Director of the DC Marketing
Center, and others in unveiling a new publication, "Starting a Business in
D.C." (Brazil oversees the Marketing Center through his chairmanship of the
Committee on Economic Development.) The publication is an easy to follow
step-by-step guide for anyone looking to start a new business or relocate in
the District. It informs entrepreneurs about all the steps for starting a
successful business - from putting together a proper business plan, to
working with the District's licensing agencies, to financing a business, -
and it also explains the incentives the District and federal government
offer businesses. "Through my years of experience on the Council, I know
what it is like for businesses to traverse the maze of licensing and
permitting in the District. I have worked hard to make it easier for
District businesses to succeed and grow in every neighborhood of the
District. This publication is a great addition to the work we have done -
it will help local businesses succeed in a very competitive field," said
Brazil. Brazil added, "Efforts like this are so important to meeting our
goal of providing quality jobs to our District residents because every time
a new business opens it means more job opportunities for our residents."
