[TENLEYTOWN] LISTSERVE MODERATOR NEEDED
From: Buddy Yingling <buddydc1@msn.com>
Dear All,
I am moving from my house on Western Avenue to Maryland in the near
future. Therefore, I will need someone, or two or three, to take
over as moderator of the Tenleytown Yahoo Group. I'm not saying
goodbye yet, but thought I ought to notify everyone now so there can
be a smooth transition.
Please let me know, either through the list or off-list, if you are
interested or would like to nominate someone. Since I founded this
list without anyone's input, I reserve the right to make the final
decision. However, I would like to make a choice that everyone can
live with. So, if folks want to post ideas about this on the list I
have no objections to a civil discussion over it.
Thanks and pre-congratulations on reaching 300 members soon.
Regards,
Buddy Yingling

STATE OF THE NEW SIDEWALKS?
**** From: Aaron Epstein <aajacks@starpower.net>
Has anyone noticed that the new sidewalks in our neighborhood -- installed,
what, about a year ago? -- are cracking or crumbling, badly in many places?
Were inferior materials used? Is this a sign of underlying negligence or
corruption?
Does the city have any recourse against the contractor? Is our rep on
the Council
aware of this? Does anyone care?
**** From: Sharlene Kranz <skranz_99@yahoo.com>
It is true in front of my house also, 4300 block of Albemarle.
**** From: Kevin Pettitt <kpettitt@yahoo.com>
New concrete that has not fully cured is susceptible to
damage from the use of de-icing chemicals of the sort that
were likely used by many residents during the recent winter
ice storms. Even if you didn't use chemicals on your own
sidewalk, there may have been some residue from road
chemicals deposited on the sidewalks by the snowplows.
Even high quality concrete needs time to cure, and the
de-icing packages warn against using the product on
concrete less than 2 years old.
WISCONSIN AVENUE BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT
From: Kersti Colombant, Kcolombant@aol.com
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
March and April are fund raising months for the Wisconsin Avenue
Beautification Project.
Last year we organized two clean-up days; we mulched the entire project
twice; we did new planting and some replanting. We worked with American
University
to replant Tenley Circle. We worked with the city and the Fort Meyer
construction company after they replaced the curbs and sidewalks. What
seemed
disastrous turned out fine because they replanted and the summer’s rain
kept all the
new plants alive. As of now, for the first time in ten years, all the
alloted
street trees are planted and alive, thanks to the continuous efforts of
volunteers to water them. At present we are working with Madison Realty and
Roadside Development to beautify the area in front of the new building
at 4500., We
are also working with DC Parks and Recreation to have the Fessendent park
planted, hopefully in the spring
We were able to continue the maintenance and planting in 2003 because of
the
donations given by neighbors, businesses, institutions and the ANC3E and
also because of cooperation from American University and the DC
Department of
Parks and Recreation. and the help of volunteers We hope that this year you
will continue to support this project by volunteering and by a generous
contribution.
Checks can be made out to WABP (Wisconsin Avenue Beautification Project)
and
are tax deductible. The address for the project is 4439 Davenport st. NW,
Washington DC 20016.
If you need more information call Kersti at 202 966 88 37.
Many thanks for your support.
Jo Cooper, Project Chair
The Wisconsin Avenue Beautification Project is a partnership effort among
local residents, businesses, and insitutions to relandscape Wisconsin

NEEDED: SPECIAL DOG SITTER FOR SPECIAL DOG
From: Alice.Thurston@usdoj.gov <Alice.Thurston@usdoj.gov>
I have a "special needs" dog - fully blind and largely deaf - who fairs
poorly at any
kennels I've tried, because of his handicaps. I would like to see if
there's someone who
might be interested in caring for him in-home. He's a small, though not
miniature, Dachshund,
calm and sweet, with a big heart and lots of love in him. He has a loud
bark, which he
employs when confused, but is not otherwise much of a barker. He loves
to sit on a couch
and snuggle. A house with small children, other dogs or infirm people
would likely not be a
good fit. Thank you very much, Alice Thurston
HOW DOES ONE GET A TRAFFIC LIGTH INSTALLED?
From: Lois Fingerhut <lfingerhut12@starpower.net>
How would I go about getting a traffic light, or one-way designation or
something at the
intersection of River, Fessenden St and 45th St. This weekend there was yet
another traffic crash. I asked the officer what could possibly be done and
her response was call and complain to the Mayor's Command Center...
Any suggestions on the best approach to this?
Thanks, Lois Fingerhut
MISUSE OF PUBLIC SPACE?
From: Jim Holway <clutch3906@starpower.net>
The 5400 block of 42nd Street, NW is becoming an outdoor garage. A week
ago, a glass replacement company was replacing a windshield on a car in
the block. Yesterday, for the second time, Auto Detailing, 240-372-8665,
a Maryland company set up shop to detail a Maryland car. My wife called
the 2nd District and was referred to the non-emergency number. The
officer who appeared on the scene told her that detailers were working
in a public street and could do anything they wished. In addition, the
owner of the Maryland car being detailed worked in a nearby office
building. A call to the DC Regulatory Affairs office elicited the
information that any auto wash or detailer must have a fixed location in
DC, that business such as this...and oil changing.... could not be done
on DC streets, that Auto Detailing was clearly operating a business in
DC without a license.
We didn't get the officer's name. He should be informed that DC streets
are not open-air workshops.
Thanks, Jim Holway

TREE INVENTORY NOW MAPPED
From: Gray, Justin (OP)
The tree inventory conducted in 2002 by the Casey Tree Foundation of the
106,000 street trees in DC is available to view at
http://www.caseytrees.org/treemap.html
The inventory is quite detailed I was able to learn that the street tree
directly outside my house is a Norway Maple and has the highest
environmental and economic value on the block, I am just so proud I might
go out and buy some mulch, and though the neighboring Gingko stinks in
late summer it removes quite a bit of sulfur dioxide, so I may come
around.
As for the environmental and economic value information
The USDA Forest Service at SUNY College of Environmental Science and
Forestry has built an analysis tool to evaluate the environmental and
economic value of the urban forest aptly named the Urban Forest Effects
Model. The figures listed under environmental and economic value of the
tree result from this analysis.
