ALBANIA SLIDE SHOW TONIGHT
From: Robert Hyman <RobertHyman@erols.com>
The following will be at St Luke's Church on Feb. 3rd at 7:30 pm.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Albania Slide Show
If you missed the Mount Everest slide show or the one on the Jungles of
Panama, you don't want to miss this.
Immediately following the regular meeting, Glover Parker Robert Hyman,
who is also Photographer / Mountaineer / Explorer will present a slide
show and talk about his travels through Albania's mountains and villages
that were closed and "off limits" to Westerners and Albanians for 50
years, titled "Albania: A Look Inside the Old Eastern Block."
In 1992 Robert Hyman was a member of an expedition to the most remote
places in this country experiencing violence and unrest. This
international scientific expedition that included Smithsonian scientists
would collect samples of flora and fauna as they traveled for a month
exploring this repressed and isolated country's mountains and rivers.
This expedition would be the first major expedition to explore Albania
since the 1914 Austrian Expedition. Don't miss this great opportunity!
ATTENTION BICYCLE RIDERS
Ehrlich nixes bike trail.
From: Rich Hoye <rich.hoye@innerpurpleline.org>
The Ehrlich administration has moved to eliminate long-planned
bicycle trails from three transportation corridors.
The Inner Purple Line light rail project, which would include
a paved bike trail from Bethesda to the Silver Spring Metro, has
morphed into a busway. In order to bypass Columbia Country Club,
new plans call for running buses on existing streets. This would
make it impossible to extend the Capital Crescent Trail into
Silver Spring and connect it with the Metropolitan Branch Trail,
which is now under construction between Silver Spring and Union
Station. See:
http://home.earthlink.net/~wphyilla/purple.html
Write to Governor Ehrlich at governor@gov.state.md.us . Tell him
that bike trails are an essential element of major transportation
projects.
COMMENT ON DC LIBRARIES
From: J Capper <jocapper@worldnet.att.net>
I only realized how severely distressed the libraries in DC are after I
began going to the Bethesda library on Arlington Blvd. It's a joy to be
there and there are hundreds of users in and out all day - with about 20
computers available for use - and free printing! DC's libraries are a
shame!
Joanne Capper
[From KS – I would add that the Tenleytown Library often stinks, literally, from the
unwashed vagrants who camp out there all day. I pity the librarians who have to breathe
that putrid air all day.]
HELP IN INSTALLING CHILD SAFETY SEAT
From: Jeffrey Moore <JAMOORE@mpdc.org>
On today's list serve, I read a posting from a resident who had been having trouble finding help installing a child safety seat. For the information of your readers, the Second District hosts a free, certified child safety seat installation program. Last year, the officers installed over 150 child safety seats, and answered over 500 email requests for information regarding child safety in vehicles. Please see the below information if you are in need of advice on child safety seats and their installation. Information is also available on the Department's web site at www.mpdc.org:
DC CAR SEAT FITTING STATIONS
Does Your Child Need a Booster Seat?
Did you know that most children need to ride in a booster seat from age 4 to at least age 8? This test is a quick and easy way to determine if a booster seat is needed.
Does the child sit all the way back against the back of the auto seat?
Do the child's knees bend comfortably at the front edge of the auto seat?
Does the lap belt cross the child's shoulder between the neck and the arms?
Is the lap portion of the lap/shoulder belt as low as possible, touching the thighs?
Can the child stay seated like this for the entire trip?
If you have answered "no" to any of these questions, your child needs a booster seat to ride safely in the car.
Scheduling a Safety Seat Fitting
Individuals interested in having their child safety seat fitted may do so at the Second District. Information about sheduling appointments is listed below.
A completed form, with a signature, is required for each child safety seat that is being checked.
Each child safety seat check/installation may take as little as 10 minutes or as long as 50 minutes, depending on the car seat, the vehicle, or the number of seats to install. We teach you how to install your car seat.
LEAD IN WATER
From: Pagano, Penny (COUNCIL) <ppagano@dccouncil.us>
Update from Councilmember Kathy Patterson on lead in water: Several people
have asked about being tested for lead. DC will test children six months to
six years of age and pregnant women free of charge at 51 "N" Street, N.E. on
the third floor. For more information, call the Department of Health at
535-2690. Others who want tests should see their personal doctors. If you
want to have your home tested for lead in your water, please call WASA's
Lead Hotline at 787-2732. If you do not get a person on the line, listen for
the message and then leave your name, address and telephone number (with the
hours you can be reached at that number) and a WASA representative will call
you back. Also, the Committee on Public Works, of which I am a member, will
hold an emergency hearing on Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at 1:00 pm in Room
412 of the Wilson Building at 1350 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, to investigate
WASA's management of the lead service replacement program in the DC homes.
To testify, call Jim Slattery at 724-8105 or email him at
jim.slattery@dc.gov <mailto:jim.slattery@dc.gov> .
MORE ON PERCHLORATE IN GROUND WATER
From: KD McLynn <kdmclynn@starpower.net>
I would not be completely confident that contaminates in the ground
water could not infiltrate our drinking water, especially since many of
the water pipes are old and corroded. It would seem that the system
would be particularly vulnerable to contamination when the water
pressure drops.
WHAT’S NEW IN THE MPDC
From: Crimereports.com <reports@crimereports.com>
*********************************************
CHIEF RAMSEY SWEARS IN 23 NEW OFFICERS,
AS THE MPDC CONTINUES TO BUILD TOWARD 3,800
*********************************************
District neighborhoods will have nearly two dozen new officers on patrol beginning next week, as members of Recruit Class 2003-1 were sworn in by Chief Ramsey during graduation ceremonies on January 23. Prior to receiving their badges, the 23 new officers completed approximately six months of academic, physical and tactical training at the MPDC’s Maurice T. Turner Jr., Institute of Police Science. All 23 of the new officers are being assigned to uniformed neighborhood patrols in the seven police districts. Friday’s graduation ceremony, held at that Office of Personnel Management in Northwest DC, was the first of several officer graduations planned over the next few months, as the MPDC continues to build toward its goal of 3,800 officers. The MPDC’s sworn strength now stands at approximately 3,725. Mayor Williams, with support from the DC Council, has made increasing the number of MPDC officers a top priority of his public safety agenda. All of the additional officers being hired will be assigned to PSA (Police Service Area) patrols.
FOOTNOTE I: Upcoming officer graduations are scheduled for February 27 and March 12.
FOUND: RED CASE FULL OF CASSETTE TAPES
From: Stu <s.weiser@verizon.net>
This afternoon, I found a red case full of cassette tapes in the alley behind my house
(at 37 and Van Ness). I assume it was tossed out of a stolen vehicle. Has anyone had
a car stolen that contained such a case?
COMPLAINT ABOUT DMV
From: <Darnot@aol.com>
I am so annoyed. I sold my car and called the district DMV to find out if I
can get a credit on my registration (there were over 9 mos left!!!) and they
told me it had to be a year before they'd consider reimbursing. that is such a
rip off. I think VA prorates and gives back the $$. it is a total rip off that
the district would keep my money! another example of how the city does nothing
to accommodate residents!
COCKER SPANIEL NEEDS HOME
From: Michele.Wolin@nlrb.gov
My next-door neighbor (who doesn't have a computer, so I'm doing this) needs
to find a new home for a cocker spaniel. He is very sweet with people and
other dogs, but doesn't do so well with cats. She has 5 cats, and kept
hoping that he eventually would get used to them, but that hasn't happened.
Unfortunately, he got into a fight with one of the cats a few weeks ago, so
she is now trying to find him a new home. He is 13, but is still spry and
enjoys walks. His only health problem is a heart murmur, which he's had for
many years (he was checked out by the vet a few weeks ago). He is
buff-colored and very cute, and is well-behaved (except with cats). He grew
up in a family with children, so he's okay with kids. If you'd like more
information about him, please e-mail me at the above e-mail address or call
me at 202-273-1720, or call Susan at 202-537-3954.
can have a happy ending for them. Thank you for your assistance.
RESTAURANT RECOMMENDATION
From: <Vrutten@aol.com>
Restaurant Recommendation. I would like to recommend the Med Café (formerly
the Mediterranean Deli) located on 42nd street. The other night my husband
and 8 -year-old daughter and I went to dinner there and had a really nice time.
The food was good and very reasonable, the decor was great -- fabulous bright
colors, the service was very nice, and there was good live music. More than
anything, though, we left there feeling like we had been very welcomed and
very far away from NW D.C. for a couple of hours. It would be nice to see this
place succeed!
If anyone needs someone to help them design a Microsoft Access database,
I can recommend someone. He is a retired Montgomery County Public
patience and “teaches” as he works with you. He works by the hour
($65/hr) and offers the first hour free so he can get an idea of what
you want to do and what it would cost. You don’t pay him anything
unless you agree on a job. Contact Bill Franz, (301) 986-0656 williamstrasserfranz@hotmail.com
For anyone who is looking for a good salon, a former employee of a very reputable Georgetown salon has opened a stylish salon next to the very hip Eastern Market on Capital Hill. The salon is called Skin Beauty Lounge. They offer massages, facials, lash/brow tinting and body treatments including waxing (and the most authentic Brazilian bikini waxes in DC!). The phone number is 202-543-6993 and the website is www.skinbeautylounge.com but the site is still under construction so it might not be up yet.
[From KS: I gotta ask: What is a Brazilian bikini wax? Can you tell us in a public newsletter?]
VIRUS ALERT
In case you have not heard, there is a new virus spreading across the internet that is hitting a significant number of systems. The virus is being spread in the form of something that looks like a normal error message but actually contains a malicious program that spreads itself and installs a program that leaves an open door to infected computers.
The worm — called "Mydoom," "Novarg" or "WORM-MIMAIL.R" attacks Windows operating systems. Following is a link that more fully describes the virus: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100983.htm
OSAMA IN HEAVEN...
From: Daniel Straub <straubko@comcast.net>
After his death, Osama bin Laden went to heaven. There he was
greeted by George Washington, who proceeded to slap him across
the face and yell at him, "How dare you try to destroy the nation
I helped conceive!"
Patrick Henry approached and punched Osama in the nose and
shouted,"You wanted to end our liberties but you failed."
James Madison entered, kicked Osama in the groin and said,"This is
why I allowed our government to provide for the common defense!"
Thomas Jefferson came in and proceeded to beat Osama many times
with a long cane and said, "It was evil men like you that provided me
the inspiration to pen the Declaration of Independence!".
These beatings and thrashings continued as John Rudolph, James
Monroe and 66 other early Americans came in and unleashed their anger
on the Muslim terrorist leader.
As Osama lay bleeding and writhing in unbearable pain an Angel
appeared. Bin Laden wept in pain and said to the Angel, "This is not
what you promised me."
The Angel replied, "I told you there would be 72 Virginians waiting
for you in heaven. What did you think I said?"
– END –
