OUR FIRST SNOW OF THE YEAR! WHEEEE!
REMINDER FROM COMMANDER MOORE
From: "Cmdr. Jeffrey Moore" <JAMOORE@mpdc.org>
This is another reminder about not leaving valuables in vehicles.
We
still have a big problem with theft from autos, and the lions share
involve items being left in plain view.
NEW PSA202 LIEUTENANT
Lt. Mark Carter has been transferred to Georgetown, and is being
replaced by Lt. Robert Aiello. Lt. Carter is passing on his e-mail
address to Lt. Aiello. (MPDCPSA202@netscape.net). If you can't reach
him, use Commander Moore's address (see above).
THANK YOU TO ANOTHER CARING FAMILY
Thank you to the AU Park Family that adopted the Children's Advocacy
Center for their
Secret Santa project and bought coats and other clothes to donate.
They
wish to remain anonymous but their mother writes: "The kids helped
me
pick out the coats, gloves and underwear. My eight-year old really
enjoyed it and just tonight said she wanted to do something else for
the
poor."
REGARDING FRIENDSHIP PLACE FOR THE HOMELESS
From: <Elizindc@aol.com>
A clarification from Liz Siegel, Acting Executive Director of Community
Council for the Homeless at Friendship Place:
The number of clients we serve in a year, 450, includes only about
110
who live on the street. This compares favorably with the 100
homeless
found in the 1992 survey which preceded the opening of Friendship
Place. The rest of our clients are housed in transitional shelters,
permanent housing, or are with family or in overcrowded housing and
waiting for different housing.
NEW BUSINESSES IN THE 'HOOD
From: "Emily Yoffe" <eyoffe@worldnet.att.net>
I just went to the Left Bank Bakery at 4731 Wisconsin Avenue -- it's
in
the new condo development across from Martens Volvo. It was great!
The
best bread I've had in D.C. I've tried their whole wheat loaf and
sourdough baguette and chocolate chip cookies -- all fantastic. I'm
just
worried that due to their obscure location they won't last. Please
support them.
A WATER TEST RESULT
I took Bonnie Nevel up on her kind offer to be a point person for water
testing in the 'Hood. I' m happy to report that the water in my 1939
AU
Park house is 0.001 mg/L for lead, well below the EPA limit of
0.015
mg/L. The testing was done by Express Analytical Services. Their phone
number is 717-263-3222. The cost was small and the peace of mind
worth
it.

WISCONSIN AVENUE -- DAFFODIL PLANTING THIS SATURDAY
From: <Kcolombant@aol.com> (Kersti Colombant)
We have received a grant from our ANC3E to purchase daffodil bulbs
for
the project and in cooperation with American University we will plant
them on Saturday December 7, 2002 from 12 noon to 5 pm. We will plant
the Fessenden block, in front of the former Hechingers, on the opposite
side of Wisconsin from the library and in Tenley Circle.
We will meet
at the Fessenden block.
Bring your family and friends, gloves and shovels or bulb planting
tools. Come for the whole afternoon or just an hour, each minute of
work
will help make Wisconsin avenue more beautiful in the springtime.
Any questions: call Kersti at 966 8837
or Ralph at 686 9550
The Wisconsin Avenue Beautification Project is a partnership effort
among local residents, businesses, and institutions to relandscape
Wisconsin Avenue between Tenley Circle and Fessenden Street.
ANOTHER POINT OF VIEW ON WISCONSIN AVENUE
From: <Blecherm@aol.com> (Melvin Blecher)
Dear Ms Smith:
Every year you urge people to
join in to beautify Wisconsin
Avenue by picking up
litter, and planting shrubs etc. along the dirt strip between
the curb
and the sidewalk. This is a useless exercise in the commercial areas
in
which people park and cross the dirt strips in order to get to the
shops. In short order, every year, the new plantings are trampled.
What
a waste of time, effort and money!
A much better idea would be a
program to pave over those dirt
strips, leaving spaces for trees. Further, the bases of those trees
should have low ornamental fences around them to keep dogs away; urine
is deadly to growing things.
The paving would also avoid having
to slog through mud in order
to get from one's car to the sidewalk.

ENFORCEMENT OF NEW CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY LAW BEGINS
From: "Rice, Bill (DDOT)" <Bill.Rice@dc.gov>
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and Metropolitan Police
Department (MPD) has inaugurated a 30-day warning period
for the
recently enacted improved Child Passenger Safety Act. The new
legislation requires for the first time that children eight years and
younger be seated in a properly installed infant, toddler or booster
child safety seat, and it maintains the District as a leader in highway
safety.

AUPCA RESIDENT SURVEY PRELIMINARY RESULTS
From: Donald E McMullin <dmcmullin@juno.com>
Following is a compilation of the data gleaned from the survey sent
to
AU Park residents. Not being statisticians, we present it to
you in its
raw form. The survey was sent to 1,025 AU Park households;
approximately 11% responded. The numbers in the answer sections
reflect
the actual number of responses for any particular selection.
The
"Response Comments" section on various questions merely reflects those
categories which appeared with greater frequency than others.
Question #1. How well informed do you feel about issues affecting
our
neighborhood?
1a. Not at all -
6 1b. Somewhat informed
- 88
1c. Very well informed
- 22 Total responses - 116
Question #2. What could AUPCA do to improve the information flow?
2a. E-mail - 54
2b. Newsletter - 60 2c.
Other -

Total responses -
124
Question #3. How well do you feel AUPCA represents your interests
and
the interests of our community?
3a. Not at all -
0 3b. Somewhat - 21
3c. Very
well - 33
3d. Don't know - 55
Total responses -109
Question #4. AUPCA meets the first Tuesday of every October, December,
February, April, and June, at 7:30 PM at the Tenley Library.
What, if
anything, would encourage you to attend these meetings?
4a. Speakers
- 17 4b. Fewer meetings -
0 4c.
Different time - 4
4d. Different location - 2 4e. Other
- 38 Total responses: - 61
"Other" Response Comments:
The issue which really stood out
here was the need for an agenda prior to each meeting and getting it
to
the membership via our e-mail/regular mail/Kathy Smith's Communit-E.
Having guest speakers was popular. And, finally,
there was the
question of the need for meetings if there are no critical issues.
Question #5. Which top three (3) neighborhood issues are most
important
to you?
5a. Crime deterrence
- 94 5b. Economic development
issues - 54
5c. More services for the
elderly - 15 5d. Better public
school facilities, equipment, and supplies - 43
5e. More
services for youths - 9 5f. Neighborhood
appearance and
cleanliness - 66 5g. Other - 28
Total responses - 329
"Other" Response Comments:
Wisconsin Avenue/Tenleytown
development got the most responses. The general consensus was
that we
should support development, but not to the extent that it has occurred
it Friendship Heights. We need better stores, including a hardware
store, and no more mattress stores. Traffic-related responses
were
mixed. Here are some individual concerns: improving
traffic flow on
Wisconsin Avenue by limiting parking and providing more left
turn
lanes; more traffic control and parking enforcement in neighborhoods;
a
maximum of one stop sign every two blocks; a safe way of crossing River
Road; and, somewhat related, more frequent bus service within AU Park
and restoration of mass transit cuts. In addition, tree maintenance
and
trimming where signs are obscured was pointed out, as was the condition
of our alleys.
Question #6. What should AUPCA "adopt" as an ongoing
project?
Response Comments: The greatest number of responses favored adopting
the Wisconsin Avenue/Tenley Circle/metro area. Next
came "a school",
in general, and Janney, Wilson, and Deal, specifically. Third
was
"public space/park, in general, and Fort Reno, Turtle, and Fort
Bayard
Parks, specifically.
Question #7. Would you be interested in (any of the following)?
7a. Helping set up/design
our web site? - 3 7b. Developing
a neighborhood/city services guide for new homeowners? -
4
7.c. Starting a volunteer
committee? c(1). Membership
development: - 1 c(2). Crime & safety -
2 c(3). Traffic -
5 c(4). Beautification - 3
c(5). Coordinating community yard sale - 4
c(6). Social - 1
c(7). Economic development - 0 Total number

CRICKETS AGAIN!
If you can stand one more suggestion for live-trapping crickets, I
had
some success just by luck. I had placed a bag of apples in a
paper
grocery bag on the floor of my basement. The bag was open at the top
but
fairly high off the ground - for a cricket. They managed to get in,
but
couldn't or wouldn't leave. I took the bag outside, emptied the crickets
and kept the apples. I suggest trying just one apple in a tall open
grocery bag and see how that works. Then again, I haven't seen any
lately and suspect the cricket season is over. Try it next fall.

DMV -- PAYING ONLINE
From: James Treworgy, jamie@trewtech.com
From: Themail@Dcwatch.com
While Paul Shapiro's irony is duly noted, it is about time that credit
be given where credit is due. The much-maligned new DMV computer system
has saved me at least two trips to the motor vehicle office, and it's
hard to overestimate the value of that. First, I ordered a replacement
registration online after I accidentally tore mine in half. It arrived
within a week. Not a week later, I lost my driver's license after a
trip
involving air travel (you know, you have to show it so many times you
leave it in your front pocket, and next thing you know it's gone).
I was
sure I was doomed to a trip to DMV. Not so. I ordered a replacement
online for the princely sum of $5.00 and it arrived, again, within
a
week.

if
you just pulled the plug on a loved one.
21. You get up in morning and go online before getting your coffee.
22. You wake up at 2 a.m. to go to the bathroom and check your e-mail
on
your way back to bed.
23. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. :)
24. You're reading this.
25. Even worse; You're going to forward it to someone else.
