IN REMEMBRANCE OF OLIVER MURRAY
From: Shari Pfleeger <pfleeger@rand.org>
The holidays won't be the same without Murray. When we moved
to
Davenport Street 15 years ago, Oliver Murray ("Murray" to his friends
and neighbors) held a party to introduce us to the neighborhood.
And
Murray delivered a huge bouquet of flowers to our house when I finished
my PhD. Murray gave life and color and cohesion to our neighborhood.
He always decorated his house for the seasons -- a pumpkin-headed ghost
for Halloween, a colored-egg-laden tree for Easter, and spectacular
lights for Christmas. And he always filled his yard with trees and
flowers -- even realistic fake flowers when he was too tired to plant
the real thing! Before he retired, Murray was Paul Mellon's butler.
Often our doorbell would ring, and Murray would deliver cream to us
from
the Mellons' Virginia farm, so that my husband the amateur pastry chef
could whip up something yummy for all of us to share. In warm
weather,
Murray and Esther were always sitting out on the porch, waving to those
who walked by and welcoming those who wanted to join them for a cold
drink and a chat.
Our neighborhood won't be the same without him. Murray died on
the last
Sunday in October, leaving a legacy of warmth and friendship that
enriches us all.

PRESENTATION ON TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT - NOVEMBER 13
From: Gina Mirigliano <pgb@tidalwave.net>
I'm forwarding an e-mail from Robert Collins, DC Office of Planning,
that announces an informational session to be held on 11/13/02
regarding:
1. Transit Oriented Design
2. Upper Wisconsin Avenue Plan
The Planning Office is currently underway with the selection of a vendor
to develop a strategic plan to guide development of Wisconsin Avenue
between Fannie Mae and Western Avenue. The 11/13/02 discussion will
inform citizens about one objective (transit oriented design) that
the
Office of Planning has for inclusion in the strategic plan. Citizens
will also be informed about the status of the planning project itself.
REGARDING DELIVERY AND OTHER THEFTS
**** From: Carolyn M Parr <jerryparr@iopener.net>
A UPS package was stolen from the front porch of a house in the 3700
block of Brandywine about a month ago. This was reported to the
police.
**** From: "Maren Handler Siegel" <marenhs@hotmail.com>
I just wanted to notify your readers that my son's bike was stolen
off
our porch the other night. We live on Yuma St., b'twn 42ed and
43ed.
Our neighbors dog woke them barking at about 2 in the morning, and
when
they looked out the window they saw a couple of hooded figures riding
on
a red bike. I'm betting it was my son's. Other people on
our block
have had things like scooters taken as well, some of which have later
been spotted and found elsewhere in the neighborhood. I tried
to file a
police report, but did not have the serial # of the bike. If
anyone
sees a kid's red 2 wheeler in the area, please let me know. My
son
(who's 7) was pretty broken up about it.
[From KS -- It's a really good idea to get your bike registered at 2D.
If it's stolen and later found, the police will be able to return it
to
you. In this case, I would suggest that Maren contact Lt. Mark Carter
and ask him to check any recovered bikes that might be in storage
at 2D
to see if her son's bike is there. He can be reached on
MPDCPSA202@netscape.net.]

UPDATES ON VEHICLE REGISTRATION ON THE WEB
**** From: "Wexler, Mike" <Wexler@innocon.com>
Last time I checked on the web in August, you could not renew ON-line
if
you have not received the renewal notice! How is that for a catch-22?
I had to stand IN-line for 2 hours at the Georgetown office.
-----
From: "Pagano, Penny (COUNCIL)" <Ppagano@dccouncil.washington.dc.us>
Update on vehicle registration renewals...
...DMV's web site says that you can renew a vehicle registration on
line
if your registration "expires within 60 days but is not less than 10
days from expiration."
-----
Mike, I saw your email about online vehicle registration and needing
a
renewal notice.
This may not have been on the DMV web site earlier when you tried to
use
it, but currently the online vehicle registration renewal site says
that
if you don't have the control number from your renewal notice, you
can
provide the last 4 characters of your Vehicle Identification Number
and
your plate (tag) number.
Penny
**** From: "Robert Hyman" <RobertHyman@erols.com>
To Penny Pagano, Indeed people are not being notified of impending
expiration of their DC vehicle inspection and sometimes registration.
In
many cases residents prefer to try and get away with not doing so for
a
variety of reasons, tinted windows being one of them. I have observed
cars with 2 year old expired inspection and six month old tags. Even
when tickets are issued to these scofflaws they delay by hiding or
parking off the street. To some extent it is the responsibility of
the
vehicle owner to make sure the car is in compliance with DC motor
vehicle law themselves.
**** From : Ann
I am just curious if ANYONE has received mailed auto registrations.
Last June, one of the DMV workers told me when I called that they were
"behind" in their mailings. When I spoke to a supervisor in the
Director's office, he said that wasn't true, but had no information
on
when my registration was mailed. Only then did I hear about registration
on the Web. That's how I avoided a penalty. But, I truly
do not think
that the DMV is doing the mailings.

CRICKET CURE
From: "John A. Moody" <johnamoodydc@att.net>
'Tis the season of the cricket. They prefer warmth to cold and
will
find their way in, almost invariably at ground or basement level.
Then
for reasons of curiosity or instinct, they will find their way up into
the upper floors, and even then will further gain altitude by jumping
up
onto bathroom basins or toilet lids. The equipment which wins
this war
of man vs beast is simplicity itself. Just lay a foot long
piece of
duct tape, sticky side up on the basement floor and you will be
surprised at what you will find the next morning. It is not known
whether curiosity, random leaping about with joy and excess energy,
or
that they believe duct tape is their idea of filet mignon is what leads
to their doom. In any case, it works. Continue as necessary.
As a further example of duct tape's usefulness, it has been reported
it
will cure warts. (And it has its own website. Just ask Google.)
**** From KS -- AAARRRGGH!!!! -- John, Have a heart! Why
not just use
the old tried and true method of putting a glass over the insect,
sliding a piece of paper under it (or use your hand to cap it) and
escorting the poor "joyful" beast outside where it can die in a manner
less horrifying that being glued to duct tape.
But yeah. Duct tape is amazing. There's even a stickier variety called
marine duct tape that you can use for temporary repair of boats.

BROOKINGS INSTITUTION REPORT ON DISTRICT FINANCES
A recent study by the Brookings Institution lays out a number of reasons
why that the
nation's capital should receive more direct funding from the federal
government. Alice
Rivlin and Carol O'Cleireacain, co-authors of the study, argue the
federal government
could: make a payment in lieu of taxes; redirect part of the federal
income tax paid by
non-District residents who work in the District; compensate the District
for state-type
services; restore the federal payment as a per capita grant; and provide
state-type aid
for K-12 education.
