MORE ON DRINKING WATER AND TESTING

**** From: nevel <nevel@eli.org> (Bonnie Nevel)
I called Silas Obasi with the D.C. Water Quality Division for
clarification on the free lead/copper testing his office is planning on
doing in January. The office is indeed doing free testing; however, a
mere request by a resident to be placed on the list does not guarantee
that your water will be tested. People who are placed on the list will
be sent a questionnaire in January, and depending on your answers to the
questionnaire, your house may or may not be selected for the testing.

For people who would like to receive a water testing kit from Express
Analytical Labs, they should contact me at <nevel@eli.org>. If  there's
enough interest, I will be coordinating another bottle shipment. The
company has graciously offered us a 20% discount for bulk orders,
reducing the cost to $17.60, and free shipping.

**** From: Joseph Cotruvo <vze254xa@verizon.net>
If you feel the need to buy a water filter you should buy one that is
Certified to remove what you are concerned about. Go to   www.nsf.org,
get to Drinking Water Treatment Units , Standard 53, and you will find
listings of many different commercial products that have been
independently tested and demonstrated to remove lead along with many
other chemicals.

**** From: "John A. Moody" <johnamoodydc@att.net>
In response to an earlier item about  whole house filtration, do you
really want to spend money on filtering the water used by the toilets,
watering the lawn, the garden and the house plants, washing the car - as
well as the  washing machine?  (Dishwasher, maybe.)  Essentially, isn't
the only concern  for the water you drink or use for coffee or tea, etc?
(Or Kool Aid for the kiddies?)

HELP RE-OPEN THE SANDBOX
From: "KD McLynn" <kdmclynn@starpower.net>  (Kate McLynn)
Please help us reopen the sand play area at St. Columba's.  I live in
the 'hood and teach at St. Columba's Nursery School, 4201 Albemarle
Street. I am reaching out to neighbors for help in solving this problem.
As most of you with children know, after school hours and over the
weekend, the playground at St. Columba's is open to the community and
used extensively.

In early September, the school paid for a truckload of clean sand for
the two sand areas:   (one by Albemarle, the larger one by
Butterworth).  The kids have been having a great time in all that nice
sand.

Enter: THE PROBLEM.  The Albemarle sand area has been closed for a while
now because someone's otherwise cute, fluffy, gray and white kitty has
been using the it as an, ahem!, outdoor potty.  When seen, s/he is
shooed away, but someone isn't always watching.

SO FAR:   We have raked the sand thoroughly and treated it with a
cleaner, covered over the area to block the cat's access and to keep the
neighborhood out of harm's way until the cat improves his/her potty
habits.  And we have  consulted with a professional animal control
company, their Have-a-Hart trap hasn't succeeded yet. Any ideas to
share? The kids would like to be able to play in sand again.

ANY PROBLEMS WITH DELIVERY THEFTS??
From: "W. Geoffrey Seeley" <seemark@worldnet.att.net>
I recently found myself waiting around all afternoon waiting for a UPS
package which required my signature, when previously they had left them
at the door.  I called UPS to ask why and they told me that possibly the
reason had to do with an increase in thefts of packages in our area.  I
haven't heard of this happening - is there any anecdotal evidence out
there of packages disappearing?

CHILDREN'S ADVOCACY CENTER NEEDS COATS
From: "Insp. Lillian Overton" <lmoverto.MPD-YOUTH.MPD-HQ3@mpdc.org>
The Children's Advocacy Center (CAC) is the center that assists the MPD
Youth Division in preparing and providing for the needs of  abused
children in the District of Columbia.  As winter is fast approaching we
are greatly in need of winter coats, all sizes from infancy on up, and
underwear, all sizes toddler on up.  These items are provided to a child
going into foster care without very  many material items.  The child is
allowed to shop for his or her new coat, new underwear and other items
of clothing so that  they might maintain a level of dignity when going
to a new home environment.  Backpacks for this purpose would be greatly
appreciated as well.    Coats should be like new (and newly  cleaned) or
brand new.  Clothing items should also be like new or newly cleaned.
All underwear must be brand spanking  new!!!

Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Any questions can
be directed to Officer Miguel Miranda at MMIRAND@mpdc.org, or at
576-6768 or 576-6155. If you are unable to reach him, contact  Ms.
Basset on 576-6737 or Captain  Poteat on the same number.
(Apoteat@aol.com)  Thank you in advance for your generosity.

NEBRASKA AVENUE UPDATE FROM COUNCILMEMBER PATTERSON
From: "Pagano, Penny (COUNCIL)" <Ppagano@dccouncil.washington.dc.us>
While DDOT undertakes road work to eliminate street vibration affecting
nearby residents' homes on Nebraska Avenue just off Connecticut Avenue,
northbound traffic is being diverted to Fessenden Street while
southbound traffic will continue to use Nebraska.  Following inspection
of the construction site yesterday by the Ward 3/4 Project Manager, an
asphalt  ramp was created to allow limited access to the alley behind
the homes on Fessenden Street so that trash collection can take place at
its regularly scheduled time on Wednesday morning. In addition, cars are
permitted to park in the 3600 block of Fessenden Street during the
evening hours. The "No
Parking" prohibition is not in effect for 24 hours as indicated by the
signs posted there.

VEHICLE REGISTRATION RENEWAL UPDATE
From:  "Pagano, Penny (COUNCIL)" <Ppagano@dccouncil.washington.dc.us>
Update on vehicle registration renewals from Councilmember Patterson:
While DMV says that it is mailing out vehicle registrations renewal
notices, we are hearing from residents that they have not received
renewal notices. As a result, some people have been ticketed for not
having up-to-date registration stickers on their cars. Here is what we
recommend: (1) Check the date that the registration expires for all your
vehicles.  (2) If you have not received a renewal notice, call 727-5000.
If you have problems with that number call the Director's Office at
724-2034. They can tell you if a renewal notice has been mailed to you
as well as the date it was mailed.
(3) If your vehicle registration has expired, you can renew it at the
DMV office in the Shops in Georgetown or at DMV's main location at 501 C
Street, NW. If you go to C Street, there is a DMV express window across
from room 1033 that can handle this. DMV's web site says that you can
renew a vehicle registration on line if your registration "expires
within 60 days but is
not less than 10 days from expiration."
